Causes of staff abuse in health care facilities. Implications for prevention.

Verbal and physical abuse of health care workers (HCWs) is prevalent and costly. A 3 month prospective study was conducted to characterize precipitating conditions and the perpetrators of abusive incidents reported by HCWs at a large inner city hospital. Sixty-six HCWs reporting 102 incidents were interviewed by a research nurse within 48 hours of the incident. Abusive incidents resulted from 55 different patients and 11 visitors. Verbal abuse accounted for 42 incidents (41%) and 60 (59%) involved physical abuse. Two thirds of the abuse occurred on psychiatric wards, 20% on inpatient wards, an

Youth Incarceration in Adult Facilities and Mental Health in Early Adulthood.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between youth incarceration in adult correctional facilities and mental health in early adulthood. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from 1997 through 2019 (N = 8,961) using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. An ordinary least squares regression model using inverse probability weights was used to assess the influence of youth incarceration in an adult facility on average mental health scores from age 18 to 37. RESULTS: Respondents incarcerated in an adult facility as a youth had poorer average mental health than those not he

Arbovirus surveillance in febrile patients attending selected health facilities in Rwanda.

Arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses cause emerging diseases that affect the livelihoods of people around the world. They are linked to disease outbreaks resulting in high morbidity, mortality, and economic loss. In sub-Saharan Africa, numerous arbovirus outbreaks have been documented, but the circulation and magnitude of illness caused by these viruses during inter-epidemic periods remains unknown in many regions. In Rwanda, there is limited knowledge on the presence and distribution of arboviruses. This study aimed at determining the occurrence and distribution of selected arboviruses, i.e., chiku

Quality of malaria case management at outpatient health facilities in Angola.

BACKGROUND: Angola's malaria case-management policy recommends treatment with artemether-lumefantrine (AL). In 2006, AL implementation began in Huambo Province, which involved training health workers (HWs), supervision, delivering AL to health facilities, and improving malaria testing with microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Implementation was complicated by a policy that was sometimes ambiguous. METHODS: Fourteen months after implementation began, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 33 outpatient facilities in Huambo Province to assess their readiness to manage malaria and th

Heat Health Management in a Quarantine and Isolation Facility in the Tropics.

INTRODUCTION: The Howard Springs Quarantine Facility (HSQF) is located in tropical Northern Australia and has 875 blocks of four rooms (3,500 rooms in total) spread over 67 hectares. The HSQF requires a large outdoor workforce walking outdoor pathways to provide individual care in the ambient climate. The personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the safety of quarantine workers varies between workgroups and limits body heat dissipation that anecdotally contributes to excessive sweating, which combined with heat stress symptoms of fatigue, headache, and irritability, likely increases th

Community health facility preparedness for a cholera surge in Haiti.

With increasing population displacement and worsening water insecurity after the 2010 earthquake, Haiti experienced a large cholera outbreak. Our goal was to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of seven community health facilities' ability to respond to a surge in cholera cases. Since 2010, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with a number of public and private donors has been working with seven health facilities in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality from cholera infection. In November 2012, CRS through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s support, asked the Johns Hopki

BACKGROUND: In 2004, as part of Ascension Health's "Healthcare That Is Safe" initiative, St. Vincent's Medical Center, as an alpha site, was charged with defining best practices to eliminate facility-acquired pressure ulcers. A comprehensive plan, including the "SKIN" (Surfaces, Keep the patients turning, Incontinence management, Nutrition) bundle, was developed. RESULTS: The incidence of pressure ulcers decreased from > 2% to < 1% from December 2004 through February 2006. No new Stage III or IV facility-acquired pressure ulcers occurred between August 2004 and February 2006. Weekly SKIN oper

Mental health nurses' beliefs about smoking by mental health facility inpatients.

This study examined beliefs of mental health nurses about smoking by clients, nurses, and visitors in inpatient facilities and identified the influence of years of experience, smoke-free status, and workplace on these beliefs. Data were collected by a survey, distributed via a nursing newsletter with approximately 600 members. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations explored the data. A total of 104 responses were received. Smoke-free status made significant differences to nurses' beliefs relating to prohibition of smoking for clients, staff, and visitors; concern about the effects of pas

Lean-Oriented Layout Design of a Health Care Facility.

BACKGROUND: In this article, we propose a method that integrates systematic layout planning techniques to lean health care practices aided by multicriteria decision analysis that could be applied to reformulate the layout of health care facilities. METHODS: We analyze a high-variety sterilization unit of a large public hospital located in Brazil. The unit is currently implementing lean practices, and layout changes are required to provide more efficient materials and information flows. RESULTS: Traditional design of health care facilities is not aligned with lean implementation and its under

[Utilization of antibiotics in and outside of health facilities in Norway in 1998].

BACKGROUND: Data on overall consumption of antibacterials are an important basis for measures against antibiotic resistance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Salesdata of antibacterials (ATC group J01) for systemic use was collected from all hospitals in Norway for the year 1998. The sale to hospitals was subtracted from the total sale of antibacterials in Norway and the consumption for outpatient settings was estimated. RESULTS: The total use of antibacterials for systemic use in Norway was 14.4 DDD/1,000 inhabitants/day in 1998, which has been regarded as low. The use of antibacterials in hospitals w

Factors Associated with Continued Use of Mission Health Facilities in Ghana: A Facility-Exit Survey of User Perceptions.

Partnerships between the state and faith-based providers, such as the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), are crucial for expanding healthcare coverage in lower-middle-income countries. However, limited evidence exists on how communities perceive these services and what factors are associated with continued use among those who access them. We conducted a quantitative cross-sectional facility-exit survey among 799 current and past users recruited at CHAG facility exits across four regions between October and December 2024. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire guided by

Mental health facility ownership and smoking cessation services: a facility-level analysis across the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., tobacco use affects 19.8% of adults (49.2 million) as of 2022, with rates highest among those with mental health conditions. Mental health facilities offering cessation counseling present critical opportunities to support these vulnerable populations. This study aims to examine how ownership structure influences smoking cessation counseling provision in U.S. outpatient mental health facilities. METHOD: This cross-sectional study derived data on 9,645 outpatient (OPD) mental facilities from the 2019 N-MHSS-a census of all public and private mental health treatment faci
