Librarians, Dentists, Journalists, and Undergrads: A Case Study Implementing a Journalism Teaching Hospital Within Marginalized Communities.

This study considers a practice-based learning project in which 173 undergraduates enrolled in a journalism class reported on oral health issues in marginalized communities. Health fairs at local libraries provided a starting place for students to cover oral health care, an underreported topic in the media. Three nonprofit journalism organizations partnered with the effort to publish student-produced content. Through written responses from all students and 30 in-depth interviews with professional journalists, librarians, health professionals, and students, this qualitative case study presents

Antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae recovered from companion animal and livestock environments.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria represent an important concern impacting both veterinary medicine and public health. The rising prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC beta-lactamase, carbapenemase (CRE) and fluoroquinolone-resistant Enterobacteriaceae continually decreases the efficiency of clinically important antibiotics. Moreover, the potential for zoonotic transmission of antibiotic-resistant enteric bacteria increases the risk to public health. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of specific antibiotic-resistant bacteria on human contact surfaces in various

Influenza Vaccination of Swine Reduces Public Health Risk at the Swine-Human Interface.

Influenza A viruses (IAV) in swine (IAV-S) pose serious risk to public health through spillover at the human-animal interface. Continued zoonotic transmission increases the likelihood novel IAV-S capable of causing the next influenza pandemic will emerge from this animal reservoir. Because current mitigation strategies are insufficient to prevent IAV zoonosis, we investigated the ability of swine vaccination to decrease IAV-S zoonotic transmission risk. We assessed postchallenge viral shedding in market-age swine vaccinated with either live-attenuated influenza virus (LAIV), killed influenza v

Drive-by readings: a creative strategy for tuberculosis control among immigrants.

OBJECTIVES: We explored an innovative strategy for targeted testing and disease management among immigrant communities at risk for tuberculosis. METHODS: Taxi drivers were recruited at an airport holding lot to undergo tuberculin skin testing (Mantoux). After receiving their test results in a location convenient for them, drivers with positive results were referred for evaluation and treatment. We conducted baseline and follow-up assessments. RESULTS: Of 123 drivers who participated, two thirds (82) were at high risk for tuberculosis. Seventy-eight (63%) of the 123 returned for test readings

Evolution of influenza A viruses in exhibition swine and transmission to humans, 2013-2015.

AIMS: Swine are a mixing vessel for the emergence of novel reassortant influenza A viruses (IAV). Interspecies transmission of swine-origin IAV poses a public health and pandemic risk. In the United States, the majority of zoonotic IAV transmission events have occurred in association with swine exposure at agricultural fairs. Accordingly, this human-animal interface necessitates mitigation strategies informed by understanding of interspecies transmission mechanisms in exhibition swine. Likewise, the diversity of IAV in swine can be a source for novel reassortant or mutated viruses that pose a

Understanding consumer preferences for communication channels to create consumer-directed health promotion efforts in psychiatric rehabilitation settings.

People with serious mental illnesses experience increased rates of physical illnesses. Drop-in centers and psychosocial rehabilitation programs can serve as important settings for health promotion efforts, but such efforts should utilize communication strategies that are used by consumers and are perceived to be reliable. Focus groups involving 23 consumers at drop-in centers in Philadelphia were conducted to assess the perceived usefulness of health information from a variety of sources. Consumers especially liked getting information from other people, including health care professionals, fri

Hemoglobinopathies in a general and family practice setting.

The incidence of sickle cell trait varies among blacks in North America. Although the average hemoglobin (Hb)-AS gene frequency is 8% in the United States, a value of 13.4% was recorded in South Carolina. Preliminary studies during a two-day community sponsored health fair in Selma, Alabama, revealed a sickle cell gene frequency of 15.96%. This study also found an intermediate frequency of 12.4% in a family practice center that is accredited for a residency program. Through a screening program, sickle cell trait was detected, a rigorous training program for resident physicians in family practi

Mass Gatherings and Respiratory Disease Outbreaks in the United States - Should We Be Worried? Results from a Systematic Literature Review and Analysis of the National Outbreak Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Because mass gatherings create environments conducive for infectious disease transmission, public health officials may recommend postponing or canceling large gatherings during a moderate or severe pandemic. Despite these recommendations, limited empirical information exists on the frequency and characteristics of mass gathering-related respiratory disease outbreaks occurring in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify articles about mass gathering-related respiratory disease outbreaks occurring in the United States from 2005 to 2014. A s

Recognizing Latinos' range of skin pigment and phototypes to enhance skin cancer prevention.

Latinos in the United States may have the mistaken assumption that their natural pigmentation protects them from developing skin cancer that, effectively, serves as a barrier to Latinos receiving education in primary and secondary prevention of skin cancer. Latino adults of Mexican or Puerto Rican heritage attending community health fairs in the greater Chicago area responded to a culturally informed and sensitive measure for sunburn and tan, which was previously adapted to capture skin irritation with tenderness from the sun occurring in darker skin types (n = 350). By self-reported responses
