The impact of social inequalities in child health on health visitors' work.

BACKGROUND: Preventive and health promotion work by health visitors ought to reduce social inequalities in child health. However, the increased health and developmental problems among disadvantaged children may constrain health visitors' ability to carry out effective preventive work. This paper measures the impact of socioeconomic inequalities in children's health on the work of health visitors and the amount of preventive work they can provide, with emphasis on 'parenting' programmes. METHODS: Data collected for health visitors' profiles were analysed in an ecological cross-sectional study.

Uncovering a tragic flaw in revolutionary health policies: From health and communicative inequities to communicative justice in health.

This article analyzes a contradiction facing efforts by left-leaning governments in Latin America to transform health into a fundamental social right. Policies and practices that confront health inequities generally fail to address health/communicative inequities, hierarchical distributions of rights to shape what counts as legitimate knowledge of health. This ethnographic analysis focuses on an epidemic of a mysterious disease - identified clinically as bat-transmitted rabies - in the Delta Amacuro rainforest of Venezuela in 2007-2008, tracing how parents who lost 1-3 children faced acute hea

Health inequalities in precision medicine: A systematic review.

Precision medicine aims to revolutionise healthcare by providing personalised treatments based on individual genetic variations. A systematic review was conducted to explore ethnic inequalities in precision medicine, focusing on representation of ethnic minorities or indigenous minority groups in the reporting of genomic research in any healthcare setting in the UK or other high-income countries with similar healthcare systems. Seven electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest Central, ASSIA and Scopus) were searched from inception to October 2022. Two authors independent

A Global Analysis of Within-Country Health Inequalities.

IMPORTANCE: Health inequalities are a defining social and policy concern. However, understanding whether a specific country's inequalities are large or small is limited without a comparative perspective with other countries. OBJECTIVE: To systematically compare health inequalities in 181 countries and territories from 1960 to 2021 by developing a Health Inequality Normalized Index (HINI) that does not rely on secondary variables such as income, education, or race and ethnicity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This repeated cross-sectional study including demographic cross-national compara

Stigma as a fundamental cause of population health inequalities.

Bodies of research pertaining to specific stigmatized statuses have typically developed in separate domains and have focused on single outcomes at 1 level of analysis, thereby obscuring the full significance of stigma as a fundamental driver of population health. Here we provide illustrative evidence on the health consequences of stigma and present a conceptual framework describing the psychological and structural pathways through which stigma influences health. Because of its pervasiveness, its disruption of multiple life domains (e.g., resources, social relationships, and coping behaviors),

"Health inequalities in Armenia--analysis of survey results".

INTRODUCTION: Prevailing sociopolitical and economic obstacles have been implicated in the inadequate utilization and delivery of the Armenian health care system. METHODS: A random survey of 1,000 local residents, from all administrative regions of Armenia, concerned with health care services cost and satisfaction was conducted. Participation in the survey was voluntary and the information was collected using anonymous telephone interviews. RESULTS: The utilization of health care services was low, particularly in rural areas. This under-utilization of services correlated with low income of t

Health inequalities among the elderly in western Europe.

BACKGROUND: This paper analyses gender inequalities in health status and in social determinants of health among the elderly in western Europe. METHODS: Data came from the first wave of the "Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe" (2004). For the purposes of this study a subsample of community-residing people aged 65-85 years with no paid work was selected (4218 men and 5007 women). Multiple logistic regression models separated by sex and adjusted for age and country were fitted. RESULTS: Women were more likely to report poor health status, limitations in mobility and poor mental h

Determinants of and inequalities in self-perceived health in Ukraine.

Ukraine is the second most populous of the former Soviet Republics and since transition its economy has fared even more poorly than Russia. Although the impact of the collapse of the former Soviet Union on health in Russia has been investigated, little is known of its impact in other post-Soviet republics. We report a cross-sectional study undertaken in Ukraine in March 2000. A multi-stage random sampling technique was used and 1600 interviews completed (72% response rate) with a representative national sample of Ukrainian adults. We investigated socioeconomic and psychosocial determinants of

Health inequalities in the early years: is there equalisation in youth?

In the light of a still prevalent view that health inequalities are an invariant feature of the life-course, this paper re-examines the thesis that youth, in contrast to childhood, is characterised by relative equality in health, and proposes a process of equalisation to account for changes in the social class patterning of certain dimensions of health between these life stages. The evidence relating to the relationship between class of background and health over the early years is first reviewed, focusing on seven dimensions of health: mortality, chronic illness, specific conditions, self-rat

The number of people experiencing homelessness in a growing challenge across the four countries of the UK. Homelessness bring with it a multitude of issues, including health inequality and shorter life expectancies Nurses and other healthcare professionals play an important role in providing health services to people experiencing homelessness. [Routine immunizations as a tool to reduce inequalities in health].

The effectiveness and safety of immunization against the varicella-zoster virus (vzv) has been established after decades of use in the Far East and the U.S. It has been licensed in Israel since 1999. Nevertheless, it has not yet been included in the routine immunizations provided free through Maternal and Child Health ("Tipat Halav") clinics. This is one of the causes of increasing inequalities in health since immunization against vzv is only available via a large co-payment. The Ministry of Health has decided to include immunization against vzv in its routine immunization program for children

Diet and inequalities in health in three English towns.

The diets of 2340 middle aged men and women living in three English towns were recorded. Consumption of fat and the other main nutrients was lowest in the northern industrial town, which had the highest death rates from ischaemic heart disease and from all causes combined. The findings suggest that differences in diet in middle age are not a major cause of differences in adult mortality between one part of Britain and another.

Negative perceptions of the health system and racial inequities in PSA screening.

BACKGROUND: Black individuals in the U.S. experience significantly higher prostate cancer mortality and are more likely to be diagnosed at younger ages with aggressive disease. This disparity may be influenced by negative healthcare perceptions and racial discordance between patients and providers, impacting lower rates of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. We hypothesized that these factors would be associated with reduced PSA screening uptake, particularly among Black men. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between negative healthcare perceptions and PSA screeni

Trends in Income Inequities in Cardiovascular Health Among US Adults, 1988-2018.

BACKGROUND: Mean cardiovascular health has improved over the past several decades in the United States, but it is unclear whether the benefit is shared equitably. This study examined 30-year trends in cardiovascular health using a suite of income equity metrics to provide a comprehensive picture of cardiovascular income equity. METHODS: The study evaluated data from the 1988-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Survey groupings were stratified by poverty-to-income ratio (PIR) category, and the mean predicted 10-year risk of a major cardiovascular event or death based on the
