[Low risk of acquiring the hepatitis C virus for the health personnel].

BACKGROUND: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is transmitted by the same routes as that of hepatitis B (HBV) and that of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Health care workers have been considered at risk although of different intensity for acquiring the HBV and HIV with the risk of acquiring the HCV being ignored. METHODS: The presence of anti-HCV was investigated in 338 hospital workers, 110 proceeding from risk areas without direct contact with patients (laboratories and cleaning staff), 141 in direct contact and 87 with accidental risk (needle pricks or splashing of blood products) whom, a

The impact of stigma on health care-seeking behavior in military personnel with mental health challenges.

Prolonged armed conflict has raised significant concern about the mental health of military personnel and veterans. Conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression affect approximately 14-16% of U.S. service members deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Other prevalent mental health issues include suicide, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorder, and aggression. Despite the availability of mental health services, stigma remains a major barrier to care, with nearly 60% of affected personnel avoiding treatment. This review examines how stigma influences help-seeking behavior

Predicting mental health problems in military personnel following deployment: The Military Mental Health Risk Screen.

Many military service members experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions following deployment; however, current methods for screening and identifying those at risk for developing mental health disorders are insufficient. The present study used archival, prospectively collected longitudinal data on risk factors to create a brief screening measure that could be used to proactively identify those most likely to develop longer-term PTSD and other mental health symptoms following deployment. Data were available for 512 military personnel, and the sample was r

Effectiveness of mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine among U.S. Health Care Personnel.

BACKGROUND: The prioritization of U.S. health care personnel for early receipt of messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), allowed for the evaluation of the effectiveness of these new vaccines in a real-world setting. METHODS: We conducted a test-negative case-control study involving health care personnel across 25 U.S. states. Cases were defined on the basis of a positive polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) or antigen-based test for SARS-CoV-2 and at least one Covid-19-like sympt

[Thoracic radiography in occupational health examination of hospital personnel. Making decisions].

BACKGROUND: The routine chest radiography has been legally suppressed because of its low diagnostic profitability in non selected populations. Health surveillance of occupational populations at respiratory risk is entering a transitional period, where new guidelines are needed. Therefore, we determined to study the percentage of pathological findings in the chest radiographies of health examinations for hospital workers and whether it was possible to obtain explicative models allowing to calculate the probability of radiographies alteration. METHODS: A representative stratified sample of work

No evidence of nosocomial Pneumocystis carinii infection via health care personnel.

Clusters of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised settings suggest person-to-person transmission. We examined whether personnel in a ward for HIV-infected patients were carriers of P. carinii. None of 29 sputum samples from 19 personnel caring for HIV-infected patients had detectable amounts of P. carinii DNA, as determined by the two PCR methods used. Two of 26 personnel were found, by an immunofluorescence assay, to have serum antibodies for P. carinii. The results do not support the hypothesis that personnel represent major vectors or transient reservoirs for spreading P

Qualitative interview study of strategies to support healthcare personnel mental health through an occupational health lens.

BACKGROUND: Employee Occupational Health ('occupational health') clinicians have expansive perspectives of the experience of healthcare personnel. Integrating mental health into the purview of occupational health is a newer approach that could combat historical limitations of healthcare personnel mental health programmes, which have been isolated and underused. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to document innovation and opportunities for supporting healthcare personnel mental health through occupational health clinicians. This work was part of a national qualitative needs assessment of employee occupation

The Oral Health Status of Spanish Naval Military Personnel: A Retrospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Oral health has specific importance and consequences from a military and Navy standpoint. The aim of this study was to determine and compare caries prevalence and dental care in Spanish Navy personnel. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out with a sample size of 1318 individuals (34.65 ± 8.82 years old) stationed at the Rota naval base in Spain, whose dental charts were examined. Caries prevalence was assessed using the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index; dental care was evaluated using the care index (CI); and demographic and occupational

Deployment of personnel to military operations: impact on mental health and social functioning.

UNLABELLED: This Campbell systematic review examines the effects of deployment on mental health. The review summarizes evidence from 185 studies. All studies used observational data to quantify the effect of deployment. This review includes studies that evaluate the effects of deployment on mental health. A total of 185 studies were identified. However, only 40 of these were assessed to be of sufficient methodological quality to be included in the final analysis. The studies spanned the period from 1993 to 2017 and were mostly carried out in the USA, UK and Australia. The studies all had some

Predictors of disability discharge disposition for Navy personnel with a mental health problem.

This study examined the extent to which severity of mental health diagnosis and length of military service predict medical discharge disposition for Navy personnel (N = 1,450). Results corroborated the findings of a similar study related to back problems in which both severity and length of service were significant predictors. Examination of consistency of mental health diagnoses from time of hospitalization to last Physical Evaluation (PE) Board determination revealed that nonpsychotic primary diagnoses were likely to shift to psychotic diagnoses by the time of last PE Board determination. Health and performance of Antarctic winter-over personnel: a follow-up study.

The medical and service history records of enlisted Navy personnel who applied to the Operation Deep Freeze Program between 1963 and 1973 were examined to determine if incidence rates and performance criteria were significantly different between a group of winter-over personnel and a control group of enlisted personnel who were rated as acceptable by a screening team but who did not winter over. Results indicated that the overall incidence rate for the winter-over group was significantly lower than the rate for the control group. The winter-over group also had significantly fewer first hospita

The Psychological Consequences of Combat Injury Among U.S. Navy Health Care Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Military health care personnel face numerous risks to mental health, including those associated with combat injury, although no study has described combat injuries within this subgroup or assessed their impact on mental health outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male U.S. Navy-enlisted health care personnel, or corpsmen, with combat injury were identified from clinical records. Noninjured corpsmen were matched to injured corpsmen with a 4:1 ratio on year of deployment end or injury and location (Iraq or Afghanistan). The final study population included 2,025 corpsmen (405 injured a

Occupation risk of needlestick injuries among health care personnel in Saudi Arabia.

In a four-year study of penetrating injuries potentially contaminated with blood among health care personnel, the majority of cases occurred amongst nurses (65%). The wards were the commonest place for injury to occur (39%) which questions whether difficult practical procedures should be performed there. Injuries occurred most commonly during the afternoons (63%). Although needles were the most frequent implement (79%) causing injury, very few cases (7%) were related to the re-sheathing of cannulae. The commonest injured area (46%) was the palmar surface of the distal forefinger of the non-dom

Susceptibility of hospital-based health care personnel to varicella-zoster virus infections.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) transmission poses a major infection risk for health care workers in the hospital environment. Immunologically normal adults who contract varicella have 9 to 25 times the risk of major morbidity or death from infection compared with healthy children. Moreover, varicella infection during pregnancy is associated with a high rate of complications and the risk of the congenital varicella syndrome. To evaluate susceptibility to VZV infection among hospital workers, the employee health service screened 241 personnel for VZV antibody by the indirect fluorescent antibody t
