Physical Activity and the Biliary Tract in Health and Disease.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystitis and gallstones affect a large segment of the population in developed nations, and a small proportion of affected individuals subsequently develop cancer of the gallbladder. However, little is known about the possible beneficial effects of physical activity. OBJECTIVE: Accordingly, a systematic review examined the influence of both acute and chronic exercise on gallbladder motility, and relationships were examined between habitual physical activity, gallbladder disease, and gallbladder cancer. METHODS: A search of Ovid/MEDLINE from 1996 to November 2014 yielded 67 ar

Impact of physical symptoms on perceived health in the community.

OBJECTIVE: Physical symptoms, such as musculoskeletal pain, dizziness, or headache, are common. People with more symptoms are reported to use more healthcare and have higher sickness absenteeism. We studied the impact of the number of symptoms on perceived health in a community sample. METHODS: Between June 2005 and March 2006, a random sample of 4741 adults was selected from the records of five general practices in The Netherlands. They were sent a questionnaire regarding the frequency and impact of physical symptoms, and other factors that may influence health (potential confounders or modi

The health care of physically handicapped young adults.

It has been recognised for many years that the amount of health care received by physically handicapped young adults rapidly declines after they leave the paediatric services. However, little is known about their specific health needs at that stage of their lives, or how these needs may be best met by the statutory services. The results of this study indicate a considerable degree of unmet need and point to a failure by the Health Service to maintain a continuity of health care for young adults with physical handicaps. A policy is called for to set up multidisciplinary Handicapped Adult Teams,

Emotional and physical health problems of battered women.

The present study focused on the emotional and physical health problems of battered women by comparing a sample of residents in shelters with a group of women in the community matched for family income, length of marriage, and number of children on the General Health Questionnaire. The results indicated that battered women report a significantly higher level of somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. These effects tended to be associated with other life stressors and children with serious behavior problems. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of assessing the needs of bat

Bone Health and Physical Activity - The Complex Mechanism.

This review summarizes the mechanism and role of physical activity in maintaining the proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system. Bone adaptation to the mechanical environment occurs in skeletal regions subjected to the greatest stresses resulting from the nature of exercise, however, there is a varied response of bone tissue to mechanical loads depending on its material and structural properties (trabecular and cortical). The regulation of bone tissue metabolism during physical exercise is influenced by factors associated with mechanical stress (gravitational forces, impact loading, and

Physical Therapy and Mental Health: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Coexistence of mental and physical health conditions is prevalent. To achieve optimal physical therapy outcomes, neither should be treated in isolation. This review aimed to map intersections between physical therapy and mental health. METHODS: This was a scoping review searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Cochrane, and PEDro databases. Two independent researchers screened studies of physical therapy practice with adolescents/adults with mental health disorders or research using primary mental health outcomes in physical health conditions or clinicians' perspective. Data were extr

Physical Activity and Health in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Clinical Background and Epidemiology: Low physical activity is a common phenotype in individuals living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It increases as renal function declines and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes and a poor quality of life (QOL). Both behavioral and disease-related factors contribute to the low physical activity levels in CKD. CKD has profound negative effects on skeletal muscle structure and function that are related to impairments in mitochondrial function, inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic acidosis, and other uremia-related factors. These factors prom

Childhood Adversity and Health After Physical Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Involvement with Child Protective Services (CPS) provides an opportunity to recognize those children at risk for ongoing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The relationship between ACEs and child health among CPS-involved children and the role of primary care providers (PCPs) in moderating this relationship is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study of caregivers of children age 2 to 12 years with a CPS finding of physical abuse, modeling the association between cumulative ACEs and child health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using the PedsQL4.0, a valid

Physical Health Checks in Patients on Antipsychotic Medication.

Schizophrenic patients have traditionally suffered from high rates of cardiovascular disease and early mortality. NICE guidelines suggest that several physical health measures be monitored regularly in these patients, and particularly those on antipsychotic medication, which has a wide side-effect profile that may potentiate the risk of cardiovascular disease and other comorbidities. This general practice audit aimed to determine the rates of physical health monitoring in primary care in patients on antipsychotic medication for over a year for psychotic symptoms or schizophrenia. The search wa

Physical Health and Drug Safety in Individuals with Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: While antipsychotic medications are the mainstay of therapy for individuals with schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, their use is associated with adverse effects on physical health that require the attention and care of prescribers. METHODS: We used the ADAPTE process to adapt existing guideline recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guidelines on the dosing of antipsychotics and antipsychotic polypharmacy, screening for adverse effects of antipsychotics, and management of metaboli

The need for routine physical health care in schizophrenia.

When managing their patients with schizophrenia, psychiatrists are increasingly concerned about physical disorders, including weight gain, obesity, metabolic abnormalities (in particular, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome), prolactin increase, sexual dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. Other common health-related problems in these patients include recreational drug use, sedation/physical inactivity, adverse drug effects and poor self-care. Each of these can have an impact on patient well-being, adherence to therapy and life expectancy. Collectively they can pose substantial barriers to o

Traumatic events and physical health in a community sample.

The relationship of traumatic events to physical health was examined in a randomized community survey (N = 2,364) of Los Angeles residents, 16% of whom had experienced a lifetime traumatic event. This study tested hypotheses that individuals experiencing traumatic events have poorer physical health and that the negative impact of traumatic events on physical health is greater among disadvantaged sociodemographic groups. Regression analyses showed that respondents with a traumatic event history indicated poorer perceptions of their physical health, more chronic limitations in physical functioni
