Sustainability of health promotion for people with learning disabilities.

AIM: To explore whether delivery of a health education programme would enable people with learning disabilities to gain knowledge about health and use it to enhance their wellbeing. METHOD: A mixed methodological approach, including questionnaires, focus groups and interviews, was used with people with learning disabilities. FINDINGS: Health education enhanced the knowledge of people with learning disabilities about their health, but this was not sustainable. Participants were unable to transfer this new information into their daily lives, and the knowledge gained did not result in demonstra

Supporting people with hoarding behaviour: a health promotion perspective.

Hoarding disorder is a complex mental health condition that is increasingly recognised as both a health concern for the individual and a wider public health issue. Supporting individuals with hoarding disorder requires multi-agency intervention, involving collaboration between local authority environmental health teams, fire safety experts, mental health specialists and health and social care professionals, including community nurses. This article examines hoarding behaviour through a health promotion lens, with a focus on the role of the nurse. The author discusses potential underlying causes

Continence promotion in health education and community outreach programmes.

Incontinence is a highly stigmatised condition that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, yet few people seek proper assessment and treatment. Therefore, outreach events aimed at specific or general patient groups can play a crucial role in creating awareness of the condition. This article discusses some of the principles behind health promotion and outreach activities, and the importance of health literacy. It suggests some questions to consider when planning outreach activities and ideas of possible events. Two case studies from the authors' community service have been in

Health promotion: reconfiguring nurses' practice to reduce social inequalities.

Inequalities in people's health due to economic or social circumstances remain a persistent challenge in the UK, with people from disadvantaged communities disproportionately likely to die earlier and experience more health issues than the general population. Health promotion has a vital role in reversing health inequalities and requires a focus on structural and political-level determinants of health, rather than individuals' lifestyle choices. However, while health promotion is a significant aspect of nurse education curricula, individual nurses may experience role confusion regarding the ap

Health Promotion for Young Adults With Serious Mental Illness.

OBJECTIVE: Young adulthood represents a critical time to address elevated obesity rates and the risk of early mortality, particularly among people with serious mental illness. Few studies have assessed the benefits of lifestyle interventions targeting weight loss among these young adults. This study examined the impact of the 12-month In SHAPE lifestyle intervention on weight loss and fitness among overweight and obese young adults with serious mental illness (ages 21-30) compared with participants over age 30. METHODS: Data were combined from three trials of the 12-month In SHAPE program del

Community health promotion with people who are experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is an experience of being displaced. Once removed from their personal places, homeless people are barred access to healthy places in which to be. Health clinics for people who are experiencing homelessness offer an opportunity to create health-promoting places. In this study, we explore how place is experienced within a community health clinic for people who are experiencing homelessness. A critical ethnographic methodology was used. Results illustrate how clients and providers contested the space of the clinic. Discourses of safety, health promotion, and privacy were enacted, alt

Epidemiological measures of participation in community health promotion projects.

BACKGROUND: The paper is concerned with the use of epidemiological methods to measure the rates at which different strata of a defined population participate in community health promotion projects. The specific aim was to estimate the incidence rates of participation in projects sponsored by the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway), separately for sociodemographic and health-related behavioural subgroups. METHODS: Data were drawn from Healthway sponsorship projects in 1992. Each sport, arts and racing project was associated with promotion of a health message and creation

Occupational therapy education in health promotion and disease prevention.

Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.

Coercive measures in health promotion: can they be justified?

Though environmental hazards and lack of medical care continue to threaten the public's health, much recent attention has turned to the role of destructive health-related behavior. If, as Fuchs suggests, changing behavior patterns is the most powerful alternative open to advanced countries in the pursuit of health, the role of the health educator is likely to grow more prominent relative to other health-care professionals. At the same time, that role may change. A campaign to solve the nation's health problems by altering habits of living may require methods which are stronger than the traditi

Community health behavior change through computer network health promotion: preliminary findings from Stanford Health-Net.

Computer-based health education has been employed in many settings. However, data on resultant behavior change are lacking. A randomized, controlled, prospective study was performed to test the efficacy of Stanford Health-Net (Stanford, CA, U.S.A.) in changing community health behaviors. Graduate and undergraduate students (N = 1003) were randomly assigned to treatment and control conditions. The treatment group received access to Health-Net, a health promotion computer network emphasizing specific self-care and preventive strategies. Over a 4-month intervention period, 26% of the treatment gr

Integration of oral health promotion in primary school health programs: A scoping review.

Children experience significant oral health problems, compromising learning and quality of life. Schools are effective in promoting children's overall health, within which oral health can be integrated. This scoping review aimed to map integration of oral health within primary school health programs. The review was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework and adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extensions for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis was referred to for data extraction. A systematic search was performed across si

Research in dental health education and health promotion: a review of the literature.

This article presents a review of research in dental health education and health promotion. In the period 1982 to 1992, a total of 57 studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to alter individuals' behavior related to dental health were identified. Combining the results of these 57 studies with descriptive articles published over the same period, it appears that dental health education can result in improvements in objective measures of dental health behaviors and actual oral health measures, but has only limited success in changing attitudes towards dental issues and achieves only

Aligning Health Promotion Principles With Health Behavior Practice: Experiences With Qualitative Tuberculosis Research.

Although health promotion scholars encourage researchers in the field to adopt a broad definition of health and a wide lens on the factors which shape it, critics have noted that health promotion research continues to be focused downstream on individual health behavior, downplaying the powerful role of structural determinants. We argue that increased use of qualitative approaches in health promotion could support the shift away from clinically defined disease and towards health promotion practices which advance community well-being and empowerment. We focus on three overlapping tensions, namel

White Paper: Open Digital Health - accelerating transparent and scalable health promotion and treatment.

In this White Paper, we outline recommendations from the perspective of health psychology and behavioural science, addressing three research gaps: (1) What methods in the health psychology research toolkit can be best used for developing and evaluating digital health tools? (2) What are the most feasible strategies to reuse digital health tools across populations and settings? (3) What are the main advantages and challenges of sharing (openly publishing) data, code, intervention content and design features of digital health tools? We provide actionable suggestions for researchers joining the c

ENDOCRINOLOGY IN PREGNANCY: Targeting metabolic health promotion to optimise maternal and offspring health.

There is an increase in maternal metabolic burden due to the rise in pregnancies complicated by obesity, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. Metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy is associated with increased risks of long-term morbidity and mortality for women and their offspring. Lifestyle interventions in pregnancy in women at risk of metabolic dysfunction have demonstrated short-term improvements such as reduced gestational weight gain and lowered risk of gestational diabetes. It is not known whether these interventions lead to sustained improvements in the

Community pharmacy interventions for health promotion: effects on professional practice and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an easily accessible and cost-effective platform for delivering health care worldwide, and the range of services provided has undergone rapid expansion in recent years. Thus, in addition to dispensing medication, pharmacy workers within community pharmacies now give advice on a range of health-promoting behaviours that aim to improve health and to optimise the management of long-term conditions. However, it remains uncertain whether these health-promotion interventions can change the professional practice of pharmacy workers, improve health behaviours and o
