Digital Health Innovations, Tools, and Resources to Support Helping Babies Survive Programs.

The Helping Babies Survive (HBS) initiative features a suite of evidence-based curricula and simulation-based training programs designed to provide health workers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to prevent, recognize, and manage leading causes of newborn morbidity and mortality. Global scale-up of HBS initiatives has been rapid. As HBS initiatives rolled out across LMIC settings, numerous bottlenecks, gaps, and barriers to the effective, consistent dissemination and implementation of the programs, across both the pre- and in-service cont

Impacts of a measles outbreak in Western Sydney on public health resources.

During February and March 2011, an outbreak of 26 confirmed cases of measles was reported to the Parramatta Public Health Unit (PHU) in western Sydney. This paper describes the impact of the outbreak on PHU resources. A retrospective review of information obtained from case notification forms and associated contact tracing records was carried out for each of the confirmed cases. Seven cases (27%) required hospital admission for more than 1 day and 10 (38%) cases required management within a hospital emergency department. There were no cases of encephalitis or death. The number of contacts was

Developing evidence-based health education resources: a participatory and iterative approach applied to the one health concept.

INTRODUCTION: The development of health education resources frequently relies on a top-down approach centered on scientific or institutional expertise, which may not always reflect the needs of end users. In a context marked by the emergence of the One Health concept and its forthcoming integration into French school curricula, the development of appropriate educational resources represents a major challenge. This study aimed to describe a participatory, iterative and co-constructive approach to the development of evidence-based educational resources within the e-Bug program. METHODS: Resourc

Faith, Food, and Health: Samoan Churches as Missed Health Communication Resources in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect Samoan communities in the Pacific Islands and United States, and food literacy is an important determinant of dietary behavior. Churches are central Samoan cultural institutions, yet their role in U.S. diaspora health practices remains underexamined. This study examines churches as nutrition and health information sources among the Samoan diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest Pacific Islander populations in the United States. Data derive from surveys of 147 Samoan adults and five semi-structured interviews conducte

Policy Options for Addressing Health System and Human Resources for Health Crisis in Liberia Post-Ebola Epidemic.

Qualified healthcare workers within an effective health system are critical in promoting and achieving greater health outcomes such as those espoused in the Millennium Development Goals. Liberia is currently struggling with the effects of a brutal 14-year long civil war that devastated health infrastructures and caused most qualified health workers to flee and settle in foreign countries. The current output of locally trained health workers is not adequate for the tasks at hand. The recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) exposed the failings of the Liberian healthcare system. There is limited eviden

Improving Health Outcomes for Immigrant Families Through IPV Screening: Resources and Recommendations for Pediatric Health Care Providers.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant yet preventable public health problem affecting 1 in 15 children annually. Children exposed to IPV exhibit lifelong consequences including increased risks of social, emotional, psychological and behavioral problems (mood and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, substance abuse, and school-related problems). Limited research exists in identifying and assessing gaps in IPV screening and surveillance techniques for vulnerable populations such as immigrants, refugees, or in families where English is not spoken in the home. Association between interpersonal resources and mental health professional help-seeking among Chinese adolescents with probable depression: mediations via personal resources and active coping.

BACKGROUND: Globally, adolescent depression is prevalent. There is, however, a dearth of studies investigating behavioral intention to professional help-seeking regarding mental health problems among adolescents having probable depression. Based on the Stress Coping Theory, the hypothesis that personal resources and active coping would mediate between interpersonal resources and behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was investigated. METHODS: Students from five junior middle schools, three senior high schools, and one vocational school were selected to participate in the survey fr

The course of somatization and its effects on utilization of health care resources.

Patients with somatization disorder (SD), subthreshold somatization, and somatization that is comorbid with another mental or physical disorder use a remarkably high level of general medical services. Because these patients view themselves as more seriously ill than do patients in the general medical population, their use of health care services may be as high as nine times greater than that of the general population. It is important to understand the course and prevalence of SD because 1) these patients tend to overuse health care resources and services, and 2) the associated costs are enormo

Enhancing mental health care: a problem, resources and goals oriented multidimensional framework (PRoGO).

BACKGROUND: Lawrence Weed introduced the "Problem-Oriented Medical Records" (POMR) approach to medicine. Its core principle is that treatment should be organised around patients' specific problems. This approach gained widespread adoption in the United States during the 1970s. However, few studies have compared POMR with the traditional "source-based" method, and evidence supporting its application in mental health remains particularly limited. METHODS: We carried out a narrative review to examine whether POMR is appropriate for mental health care and which modifications are necessary for thi

Ethical dilemmas in mental health resources for college students: A reflective case study.

Poised to have the highest number of young people in the world, India will have the onus of providing adequate mental health resources to a demographic considered among the most vulnerable with regard to mental well-being. While the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 pushed for greater accountability and care in supporting individuals with mental illness, these directions were specific to services provided by the state and did not address the care required in non-hospital settings. Since many manifestations and repercussions of mental health issues in young people occur in educational institutions, it

Teaching Hand Surgery in the Developing World: Utilizing Educational Resources in Global Health.

The development of surgical capacity in the developing world is essential to address the global burden of surgical disease. Training local surgeons in low-income and middle-income countries is critical in this endeavor. The challenges to teaching hand surgery in the developing world include a shortage of local faculty, absence of a defined curriculum, no competency-based evaluation systems, few subspecialty training opportunities, and lack of financial support. To teach hand surgery in the developing world effectively, the authors suggest principles and components of a global training curricul
