Illicit drug use and associated health risk behaviors among sexual minority youth.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the links between lifetime illicit drug use (e.g., cocaine, hallucinogens, ecstasy, heroin) and proximal health risk behaviors among adolescents and investigated sexual identity as a moderator. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Center for Disease Control's 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 17,232), a biennial, cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of youth enrolled in grades 9 through 12 in the United States. Bivariate tabulations of weighted data were used to estimate the prevalence of health risk behaviors among lifetime illicit drug

The Influence of School-Based Health Centers on Adolescents' Youth Risk Behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Youth risk behaviors that are developed during adolescence are likely to continue into adulthood, increasing chances of morbidity, mortality, and chronic health conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified six critical risk behaviors (unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors leading to pregnancies and infections, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, poor dietary habits, and insufficient physical activities) and developed the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to monitor them. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate which health

Sexual victimization and health-risk behaviors: a prospective analysis of college women.

The present study utilizes the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey to examine the relationship between health-risk behaviors and sexual victimization among a sample of college women. A prospective design is utilized to examine the relationship between health-risk behaviors as measured at baseline and sexual victimization during a 3-month follow-up period. After controlling for age and parents' education, a history of adolescent sexual victimization was associated with the following health-risk behaviors as measured at pretest: increased likelihood of cigarette smoking, marijuana use,

Health risk behaviors and attempted suicide in adolescents who report prior maltreatment.

We hypothesized that high school students who experienced prior maltreatment would be more likely than their peers to report health risk behaviors and suicide attempts. Before the establishment of a high school-based clinic, an anonymous needs assessment survey was completed by 600 adolescents (grades 9 to 12). Sociodemographic information was obtained and questions were asked about physical and sexual abuse, health-related behaviors and habits, and suicide attempts. Thirteen percent of the adolescents had been maltreated: 5.2% reported prior physical abuse, 5.4% sexual abuse, and 2.7% both ph

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that the odds of adolescents with maternal incarceration histories being classified into the "high dietary risk behavior," "high in

Childhood Victimization by Adults and Peers and Health-Risk Behaviors in Adulthood.

Victimization experienced in childhood has been linked with health-risk behaviors (HRBs) in adulthood. The purpose of this cross-sectional survey was to provide data regarding the HRBs using the ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tool Retrospective version (ICAST-R), Spanish version. This aimed to broaden existing knowledge by assessing both being victimized by adults and by peers in a Spanish general population of 348, aged 18-35. Age and timing of the reported victimization were also considered. Victimization: physical, psychological, sexual abuse by adults and/or peers showed a prevalence of 44.5

Early life adversity and health-risk behaviors: proposed psychological and neural mechanisms.

Early life adversity (ELA) is associated with poorer health in adulthood, an association explained, at least in part, by increased engagement in health-risk behaviors (HRBs). In this review, we make the case that ELA influences brain development in ways that increase the likelihood of engaging in HRBs. We argue that ELA alters neural circuitry underpinning cognitive control as well as emotional processing, including networks involved in processing threat and reward. These neural changes are associated psychologically and behaviorally with heightened emotional reactivity, blunted reward respons

Co-occurrence of health-risk behaviors among adolescents in the United States.

PURPOSE: Although it is common for adolescents to experiment with several health-risk behaviors before reaching adulthood, little is known about the co-occurrence of these behaviors. The purposes of this study were to determine the co-occurrence of specific health-risk behaviors among a nationally representative sample of adolescents, and to examine whether the distribution of multiple risk behaviors varies by age, sex, and school enrollment status. METHODS: This study analyzed survey data from a United States national probability sample (n = 10,645) of youth aged 12-21 years. Survey items me

Health Risk Behaviors Among University Students: A Latent Class Analysis and its Association With Mental Health.

Health behaviors (HB) are critical for university students, as they are closely associated with academic and overall well-being. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore health behaviors in a sample of university students, identify patterns of HB, and examine the association between these patterns and mental health outcomes. The sample consisted of 1085 university students enrolled at a private higher-education institution. Participants were predominantly female (83.4%), with a mean age of 22.74 years (SD = 7.03). Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was employed to identify distinct classes of HB.

Assessment of health risk behaviors. A tool to inform consumers, providers, health care organizations, and purchasers.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use, diet and physical activity patterns, and alcohol use are the leading causes of death in the United States. To make major improvements in the health status of the population, behavioral risk factors for disease must be addressed. METHODS: We propose a brief survey of behavioral risk factors for enrollees of health care organizations, employer groups, or other adult populations that can be used to profile the health risk behaviors of a population, assess performance of prevention and risk reduction programs, or make comparisons with other populations. The survey conta

The 'big four' health risk behaviors among Vietnamese adolescents: co-occurrence and socio-cultural risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Health Risk Behaviors (HRBs) represent significant health threats for adolescents. However, there has been relatively little research on multiple HRBs in low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC), where the majority of the world's youth reside. This study's objective was to investigate common HRB, their co-occurrence, and socio-demographic risk and protective factors among Vietnamese adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional self-report survey examined four major HRBs (tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet) among 431 adolescents aged 15-17 years in five

Decision-making and risk-taking as predictors of health risk behaviors in the Millennium Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Facets of decision-making and risk-taking are implicated in adolescent health risk behaviors; however, whether they may lead to adolescent engagement in substance use, gambling, and self-harm is unknown. METHODS: We used the Millennium Cohort Study to test whether a task-based measure of decision-making and risk-taking predicts engagement in adolescent health risk behaviors. Participants were born in the United Kingdom (2000-2002) and surveyed in-home at ages 14 (n = 10,531) and 17 (n = 8417). A computerized task-based measure of decision-making and risk-taking for reward (Cambrid
