Evaluation of the Impact of the First Wave of COVID-19 and Associated Lockdown Restrictions on Persons with Disabilities in 14 States of India.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on persons with disabilities (PwDs) in India. About 27.4 million cases were reported as of 27 May 2021. The continuing pandemic in the form of subsequent waves is expected to have negative repercussions for the disabled globally, particularly in India, where access to health, rehabilitation, and social care services is very limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions on PwDs in India. OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of disruption due to COVID-

How does the Nigerian health system serve people living with disabilities? A socio-ecological analysis on people living with visual impairment.

People living with disabilities (PLWD) in Nigeria experience significant disparities in health outcomes and access to care. Among them, individuals living with visual impairment (VI) face compounded barriers due to structural inequities and social exclusion. This paper explores how the Nigerian health system serves PLWD through a socioecological lens, with a focus on those living with VI. We conducted a narrative review using databases such as Medline, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar, along with policy repositories, to identify peer-reviewed and grey literature. Inclusion criteria focused on

An end to coercion: rights and decision-making in mental health care.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities requires a paradigm shift from a medical model of disability to a social model that emphasizes overcoming the barriers to equality created by attitudes, laws, government policies and the social, economic and political environment. The approach adopted by the social model recognizes that people with psychosocial disabilities have the same right to take decisions and make choices as other people, particularly regarding treatment, and have the right to equal recognition before the law. Consequently, direct or supported decis

Collateral impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of healthcare resources among people with disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the collateral impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare service use among people with disabilities. METHODS: We utilized the COVID-19 database from the Korean National Health Insurance Service claims from 2015 until June 2020. We included 5,850 people with disabilities and matched 5,850 without disabilities among those who were neither tested nor diagnosed with COVID-19. We used a quasi-experimental setting with a COVID-19 outbreak as an external event in a difference-difference estimation with matching controls. RESULTS: Participants with disabilities recorded a

Premature mortality in a population-based cohort of autistic adults in Canada.

Research from different countries suggests that autistic adults are more likely to die prematurely than non-autistic adults, but these studies do not always investigate male and female individuals separately and do not consider whether this pattern is unique to autistic people or is also an issue for people with other developmental disabilities. We examined premature mortality in autistic males and females (assigned at birth) in a population-based cohort, compared to males and females with and without other developmental disabilities. Using linked administrative health and social services popu

Health needs of adults with intellectual disability relevant for the family physician.

People with developmental disability, mental retardation, or intellectual disability are living longer and becoming prone to age-related health problems and diseases of old age much like the general population. This worldwide trend is also seen in Israel, where today 39.8% of persons with intellectual disability in residential care are 40 years old and above. There is a need for service and staff providers to receive training; a need for more research and better service for this aging population. This review presents health concerns for older persons with different levels of intellectual disab

Pharmacist interventions for persons with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) often have complex health needs due to the development of multiple comorbidities. Given the higher associated use of problematic medications, such as antipsychotics, and polypharmacy, persons with ID may be particularly vulnerable to adverse side effects. With their medication expertise, pharmacists have the potential to address medication related challenges experienced by this population. OBJECTIVE: Explore what is known about the care pharmacists provide to persons with ID. DESIGN: Following Arksey and O'Malley's 5-stage framework f

Service access for youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities transitioning to adulthood: service providers' and decision-makers' perspectives on barriers, facilitators and policy recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) who are transitioning to adulthood often struggle with accessing services. This limited access can result in poorer health, reduced ability to perform daily activities and engage in independent living and decreased levels of participation in society. Despite Canada's commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, British Columbia (BC) youth with NDD face additional barriers. METHODS: This study investigated service providers' and decision-makers' perspectives on barriers, facilitators and policy recomm

Factors influencing the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver disability-inclusive maternity care services: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Current evidence highlights that women with disabilities experience challenges in accessing maternity care. Improving access requires an understanding of the factors influencing the capacity of healthcare providers to provide disability-inclusive care. Although providing maternity care services for women with disabilities has been reported to be a rewarding experience, numerous factors may impact health care providers' capacity to do so. Limited evidence, especially from low and middle-income countries (LMICs), undermines our understanding of this issue and how to respond. This scop

Level of satisfaction and sexual and reproductive health needs of deaf persons in Ghana: a sequential explanatory mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: The intersection between deafness and culture in sub-Saharan African contexts such as Ghana has culminated in restricted access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. While some attention has been given to the barriers faced by deaf persons in accessing SRH services, discussion of their needs and satisfaction with SRH services is at an embryonic stage. This lends support to the use of sequential mixed-method study design to assess the level of satisfaction and SRH needs of deaf persons. METHODS: This study was guided by explanatory sequential mixed-method study design.

Engaging with discursive complexities in mental health accessibility: Implications for acquired brain injury.

The psychosocial needs of people with acquired brain injury (ABI) have been neglected based on ableist assumptions of incapability to participate in mental health treatment. Although people without disabilities benefit from evidence-based mental health supports, these treatments remain inaccessible for those with disabilities after ABI. Discursive simplifications used in dominant conceptualisations of health and disability may maintain this inaccessibility. This paper examines the role of discursive constraints in concealing the complexities of ABI recovery, undermining the gradients of mental

Consumers' experiences of rights-based mental health laws: Lessons from Victoria, Australia.

Many countries embarked on reforms of mental health law in the wake of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. These reforms have had varying levels of success. This paper considers the experience of consumers in the Victorian mental health system, drawing on an evaluation that asked consumers and clinicians about their knowledge and experience of rights under the Victorian Mental Health Act, 2014. The data show that consumers were not informed of their rights, were not involved in decisions about treatment, were not able to access safeguards, and could not exercise their ri

Beyond physical access: disability-inclusive primary health care as a test of health equity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Disability inclusion in primary health care is not a peripheral issue but a fundamental test of whether health systems in sub-Saharan Africa are advancing health equity and universal health coverage. Persons with disabilities experience persistent and overlapping barriers across the care pathway, including physical inaccessibility, unaffordable services, inaccessible information, poor provider communication, stigma, weak referral systems, and limited access to rehabilitation and assistive technology. These barriers are intensified by poverty, gender inequality, rural residence, and under-resou

Spatial Distribution And Clustering Of The Proportion Of Disabled Individuals By Districts In Punjab.

Disabilities are globally endemic and will increase with population ageing and ubiquitous prevalence of non- communicable diseases. The Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement survey conducted in 2019-20 is the only district-level representative survey that provides proportion of disabled individuals. The survey used a standardized and validated six-questions from the 'Washington Group Questions' that identify functional disabilities pertaining to difficulty in the domains of sight, hearing, walking/climbing steps, remembering/ concentrating, self-care (washing/dressing), and communic
