Estimating effects of targeted public health interventions using the interventional disparity indirect effect among the exposed.

Disadvantaged groups are often defined by characteristics such as income or ethnicity. Reducing health disparities by directly manipulating such exposures may be infeasible. Instead, interventions can target mediators between these exposures and health outcomes. Indirect effects estimated using mediation analysis, interventional effects or the interventional disparity measure can quantify the expected impact of such disparity-reducing interventions. They capture the impact of changing the mediator distribution evaluated among the total population. This means keeping individuals in their exposu

Invisible pain, visible impact: the urgent need to prioritise women's health in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) present a substantial yet often underrecognised public health challenge. This viewpoint article highlights significant sex- and gender-based disparities, where women are disproportionately affected by prevalence, diagnosis, treatment, and occupational risk factors. Many prevalent RMDs, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and fibromyalgia, exhibit a higher prevalence and greater burden in women. Women frequently experience prolonged diagnostic delays, receive incorrect initial diagnoses, and face unequal acc

Heat, health and inequalities in the WHO European region - a scoping review with an intersectional lens.

BACKGROUND: Climate change exerts diverse impacts on human health, with heatwaves emerging as a substantial concern. Social and health inequalities play a decisive role in this. Older people, children, and people experiencing homelessness or with low socioeconomic status, among others, are particularly affected by the health effects of heat and heatwaves. There is little evidence on the burden of being affected by multiple determinants of inequalities in the context of heat events. We aimed to map the research evidence on inequalities in heat-related health outcomes and their determinants in t

Bridging the gap in pediatric nutrition: a narrative review of nutritional support strategies and their impact on child health inequalities.

Childhood malnutrition is an urgent public health concern that negatively influences vulnerable populations and strengthens inequities in health. Child malnutrition occurs both as a result of undernutrition and overnutrition, both of which disrupt child physical growth and mental development and, in turn, lead to long-term health consequences that may extend into adulthood, as well as perpetuate cycles of malnutrition intergenerationally. The purpose of this narrative review is to evaluate nutritional support strategies through locally relevant policies, community engagement and support, healt

Co-Producing Training Resources to Improve Healthcare Experiences for Young Women and Reduce Gendered Health Inequalities.

BACKGROUND: Young women report feeling dismissed or unheard in healthcare settings. These experiences lead to mistrust, healthcare avoidance and ultimately contribute to gendered health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to co-produce with young women and key partners (e.g., healthcare professionals, experts in women's health and inequalities, third sector organisations and policymakers), resources to support healthcare professionals to recognise power imbalances and adapt practice to better meet young women's needs. The Ottawa Charter in practice: community-led action to reduce health inequalities in the UK.

This article presents a practice-based case study illustrating how the action areas and strategies outlined in the Ottawa Charter can be put into practice and reduces neighbourhood-level health inequalities. The Priority Neighbourhood Development (PND) programme in Worcestershire focused on small, high-need geographical areas identified through analyses of emergency hospital admissions and socio-economic data. Work in the socio-economically deprived Westlands housing area is described in detail. Community development workers mapped local assets and deficits, enabling residents to challenge sti

Global disparities in chronic dyspnoea prevalence in population-based studies: a comprehensive literature review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic dyspnoea is a common and disabling symptom that remains under-investigated as an independent entity at a population level. Most research has focused on dyspnoea as a feature of specific diseases, mainly in high-income countries. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the global prevalence of chronic dyspnoea in population-based studies, and discuss disparities across regions and populations, including low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Google Scholar and Embase were searched using dedicated algorithms. T

Temporal trends in cross-country inequalities of permanent caries burden from 1990 to 2021: a secondary analysis of the global burden of disease study 2021.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes in cross-national disparities in the burden of Permanent caries (PC) from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: We extracted the annual incidence and years lived with disability (YLDs), including their estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs), categorized by year, age, geographical region, and socio-demographic index (SDI) from the Global Burden of Disease 2021. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships among age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence, YLDs, and SDI. To assess the distributional inequalities in the burden of PC, we employed both th

Feeding health inequality through platform-based food delivery in China.

This study examines how the expansion of online food delivery platforms affects health inequality in China. Exploiting the staggered rollout of platforms across counties and nationally representative panel data from 2010 to 2022, we find that platform entry increases overweight among low-income individuals while reducing it among high-income individuals. This divergence operates through two channels: low-income users increase consumption of fried foods and reallocate time from cooking to sedentary leisure, whereas high-income users reduce intake of calorie-dense foods and increase physical act

Multiplicative Impact of Adverse Social Determinants of Health on Outcomes in Lupus Nephritis: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Social determinants of health (SDoH) likely contribute to outcome disparities in lupus nephritis (LN). Understanding the overall burden and contribution of each domain could guide future health equity-focused interventions to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in LN. Objectives of this meta-analysis were to 1) determine the association of overall SDoH and specific SDoH domains on LN outcomes and 2) develop a framework for the multidimensional impact of SDoH on LN outcomes. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of studies measuring associations between SDoH and LN outcom

Autoimmune Health Crisis: An Inclusive Approach to Addressing Disparities in Women in the United States.

Autoimmune diseases are identified by the chronic inflammation and tissue damage resulting from unregulated immune responses throughout the body. Systemic lupus erythematosus, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are among the 80+ characterized conditions, 80% of which are diagnosed in women. The compounded effects of biological sex and hormones; social identities, such as age, race, and gender; and other determinants on health highlight a pressing need for an inclusive approach to address disparities for women living with autoimmune diseases. Such an approach must recognize a

"Centering the Margins": Moving Equity to the Center of Men's Health Research.

How might the science of men's health progress if research on marginalized or subordinated men is moved from the margins of the literature to the center? This commentary seeks to answer this question, suggesting that if more attention is paid to men of color and other marginalized men, the field will be greatly enriched in its ability to understand determinants of men's health. Reimagining men's health by moving men's health disparities to a primary focus of the field may yield critical new insights that would be essential to moving men's health to the center of health equity research. Intersectionality of cancer disparities in south Asia.

Member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), home to over 2 billion people, carry a disproportionate cancer burden shaped by stark heterogeneity in risk, access, and outcomes. Beyond large proportions of people living in poverty in the context of frail infrastructure, inequities are compounded by intersecting identities, including gender, caste, religion, language, geography, and sexual or gender minority status. Commonly, women face delayed diagnosis amid low human papillomavirus vaccination and screening; rural communities confront distance and cost; Dalit,

Guide Development for eHealth Interventions Targeting People With a Low Socioeconomic Position: Participatory Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: People with a low socioeconomic position (SEP) are less likely to benefit from eHealth interventions, exacerbating social health inequalities. Professionals developing eHealth interventions for this group face numerous challenges. A comprehensive guide to support these professionals in their work could mitigate these inequalities. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a web-based guide to support professionals in the development, adaptation, evaluation, and implementation of eHealth interventions for people with a low SEP. METHODS: This study consisted of 2 phases. The first phase invol

INTRODUCTION: Reducing health inequalities is a priority in public and global health. Intersectionality is a powerful tool for analyzing complex inequalities. Unfortunately, its use remains limited in Francophone contexts, where it is often confined to abstract theoretical considerations, thereby constraining its transformative potential. METHOD: This narrative review, guided by the SANRA criteria, was conducted between February and August 2025 using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cairn to identify foundational texts, case studies, and practical resources addressing the application of intersecti

Breast cancer inequities: the intersectional role of social epidemiology and tumor biology.

Breast cancer disparities in outcomes remain a persistent challenge in the USA, with survival influenced by neighborhood context, access to resources, and the applicability of existing scientific evidence across populations. These disparities arise from complex, intersectional factors spanning social, structural, and biologic domains. While social determinants of health (SDOH) are strongly associated with breast cancer incidence and outcomes, the causality of biologic mechanisms underlying these associations remain incompletely understood. This review examines breast cancer disparities at the
