Health human resources shortages in radiography and sustainable workforce development in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Health Human Resources (HHR) are critical for the effective functioning of healthcare systems, yet significant shortages exist, particularly in radiography. The increasing demand for diagnostic radiography services, driven by advancements in medical technology, an aging population, and the prevalence of chronic diseases, exacerbates these shortages. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted workforce vulnerabilities, increasing workloads and burnout. This review examines HHR shortages in radiography in Australia and proposes strategies for sustainable workforce development. KEY FI

Recounting Workforce: The Impact of Multi-licensure on Behavioral Health Provider Estimates.

Accurate behavioral health workforce estimates are essential for workforce planning, shortage designation, and policy development. However, workforce reports often rely on license counts rather than unique providers, which can inflate workforce estimates when clinicians hold multiple licenses. This study examined the prevalence and geographic distribution of multi-licensure among Nevada behavioral health providers and assessed its impact on workforce estimates. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using administrative licensure data from Nevada licensing boards for Marriage and Family Ther

Intersex health training is associated with sustained competency gains in the healthcare workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Education on intersex health remains limited across healthcare professional training pathways, resulting in persistent gaps in workforce competencies. Existing educational initiatives are often fragmented, small in scale, and rarely evaluated beyond immediate post-training outcomes. Robust evidence on the sustainability of educational effects over time is still scarce. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the immediate and six-month educational impact of a large-scale e-learning training program on intersex health among healthcare professionals. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort s

Remote health workforce turnover and retention: what are the policy and practice priorities?

BACKGROUND: Residents of remote communities in Australia and other geographically large countries have comparatively poorer access to high-quality primary health care. To inform ongoing policy development and practice in relation to remote area health service delivery, particularly in remote Indigenous communities, this review synthesizes the key findings of (1) a comprehensive study of workforce turnover and retention in remote Northern Territory (NT) of Australia and (2) a narrative review of relevant international literature on remote and rural health workforce retention strategies. This sy

Health workforce development and retention in Guinea: a policy analysis post-Ebola.

BACKGROUND: The state of the Guinean health workforce is one of the country's bottlenecks in advancing health outcomes. The impact of the 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak and resulting international attention has provided a policy window to invest in the workforce and reform the health system. This research constitutes a baseline study on the health workforce situation, professional education, and retention policies in Guinea. The study was conducted to inform capacity development as part of a scientific collaboration between Belgian and Guinean health institutes aiming to strengthen pub

Viewpoint: HIV/AIDS and the health workforce crisis: what are the next steps?

In scaling up antiretroviral treatment (ART), financing is fast becoming less of a constraint than the human resources to ensure the implementation of the programmes. In the countries hardest affected by the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic, AIDS increases workloads, professional frustration and burn-out. It affects health workers also directly, contributing to rising sick leave and attrition rates. This burden is shouldered by a health workforce weakened already by chronic deficiencies in training, distribution and retention. In these countries, health workforce issues can n

Mental Health Workforce Inequities Across Income Levels: Aligning Global Health Indicators, Policy Readiness, and Disease Burden.

Despite growing recognition of mental health as a global priority, a critical knowledge gap persists regarding how workforce availability aligns with the burden of mental disorders across income levels. This perspective addresses that gap by comparing mental health workforce indicators and disease burden metrics from the World Health Organization and United Nations datasets, stratified by country income level. The findings reveal a striking misalignment: low- and lower-middle-income countries report the highest disability-adjusted life years due to depression, bipolar disorder, and suicide, ye

Workforce implications of injury among home health workers: evidence from the National Home Health Aide Survey.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: The direct care workforce continues to rank as one of the most frequently injured employee groups in North America. Occupational health and safety studies have shown that workplace injuries translate into negative outcomes for workers and their employers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Organization of Work and Occupational Safety and Health framework is used to examine (a) relationships between injuries and work outcomes as reported by home health aides (HHAs) and (b) the likely efficacy of employee training and supervisor support in reducin

Expanding the geriatric mental health workforce through utilization of non-licensed providers.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluate policy and practice strategies for bolstering the geriatric mental healthcare workforce and describe costs and considerations of implementing one approach. METHOD: Narrative overview of the literature and policy retrieved from searches of databases, hand searches, and authoritative texts. We identified three proposed strategies to increase the geriatric mental healthcare workforce: (1) production of more geriatric mental health providers; (2) team-based care; and (3) non-licensed providers. We evaluate each in terms of challenges and potential and provide estimates of

Bridging the gap in aging systems: health literacy and community health worker workforce innovation to address health-related social needs.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults experience complex health and social challenges, including chronic disease, polypharmacy, caregiving demands, social isolation, and unmet health-related social needs (HRSN). Health literacy is a cross-cutting factor influencing the ability to find, understand, communicate about, and navigate health and social services. Community health workers (CHWs) are well positioned to address these intersections, yet integrated workforce training remains limited. METHODS: This manuscript describes a health literacy-centered CHW and frontline workforce training model emphasizing

Building a Mental Health-Ready Nursing Workforce: A Scoping Review of Preparatory Interventions.

The rising prevalence of mental health conditions (MHCs), coupled with increased public awareness, has led to greater help-seeking behaviours and heightened demands on nurses across healthcare settings. However, many general trained nurses report feeling inadequately prepared to care for individuals with MHCs due to limited training and clinical exposure. This lack of preparedness may result in compromised quality of care, reduced professional satisfaction and poorer recovery outcomes for clients. Existing systematic reviews have predominantly focused on psychosocial interventions for psychiat
