Hen eggs (eggs) are a conventional food, known to contain the nutrients required for the growth of chicken embryos. These eggs are rich in important proteins and fats, with a very low amount of carbohydrate, and include all of the vitamins and minerals needed for the development of mice. We found that mice fed eggs grew to the same weight as mice fed a normal chow diet (ND) and remained healthy until the 20-months. As expected, the serological indicators of fat content were higher in egg-only mice than in ND mice. However, surprisingly the serum glucose levels in the egg-only mice were nearly

Adults with Down syndrome (DS) experience high risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but there is variability in the timing of transition from a cognitively stable state to prodromal AD and dementia. The present study examined the association between a modifiable lifestyle factor, employment complexity, and cognitive decline across two time points in adults with DS. Employment complexity, defined as the degree of problem-solving or critical thinking required for employment activities, was operationalized using the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, a system which classifies occupations based on t

The supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) nuclei of the hypothalamus undergo structural and functional changes over the course of healthy aging. These nuclei and their connections are also heterogeneously affected by several different neurodegenerative diseases. This chapter reviews the involvement of the SON and PVN, the hypothalamic-pituitary axes, and the peptide hormones produced in both nuclei in healthy aging and in neurodegeneration, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, progressive supranuclear palsy, Parkinson's di

OBJECTIVE: To identify the main factors associated with disability in older adults in Colombia, adjusted according to structural and intermediary determinants of healthy aging.
METHODS: This study used cross-sectional data from 23 694 adults over 60 years of age in the SABE Colombia nationwide survey. Structural determinants such as demographic and socioeconomic position variables were analyzed. Intermediary variables were classified into three blocks: intrinsic capacity, physical and built environment, and health care systems. Data analysis employed multivariate logistic regression.

Untangling the interdependency of infections, immunity and frailty may help to clarify their roles in the maintenance of health in aging individuals, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted such priority. In this scoping review we aimed to systematically collect the evidence on 1) the impact of common infections such as influenza, pneumonia and varicella zoster on frailty development, and 2) the role played by frailty in the response to immunization of older adults. Findings are discussed under a unifying framework to identify knowledge gaps and outline their clinical and publ

The cardiovascular and renal systems share an intimate physiological relationship, wherein a perturbance in one system may have an adverse effect on the other. Since the burden of renal disease increases with age, there is a considerable interest in the pathophysiology of kidney disease in the geriatric patient population. This review will explore the physiological dynamics behind the increased susceptibility to kidney disease in this population. A better understanding of these pathophysiological changes may lead to improved prevention and management strategies.

Normal mammalian brain aging is characterized by the selective loss of discrete populations of dendritic spines and synapses, particularly affecting neuroanatomical regions such as the hippocampus. Although previous investigations have quantified this morphologically, the molecular pathways orchestrating preferential synaptic vulnerability remain to be elucidated. Using quantitative proteomics and healthy rhesus macaque and human patient brain regional tissues, we have comprehensively profiled the temporal expression of the synaptic proteome throughout the adult lifespan in differentially vuln

Maintaining mobility is an important aspect of health and well-being in older men. This literature review describes several modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors impacting bone, muscle, and joint health. Exercise and nutritional interventions may help to prevent the progressive deterioration in bones, muscles, and joints impacting mobility in later life. Limitations in mobility are increasingly recognized as a major public health problem due to an aging population and growing number of older individuals affected by disabling comorbidities. Despite increasing numbers and debilitating conseq

In Study 1, carefully screened elderly adults with primary degenerative dementia or major depression were compared to healthy aged control subjects on three tests of learning and memory: the Benton Visual Retention Test, Inglis Paired-Associate Learning Test, and the Fuld Object-Memory Evaluation (OME). The sharpest distinction in performance among the groups was observed on the OME, and discriminant equations based on this test correctly classified a high percentage (greater than or equal to 90%) of participants. Study 2 applied the classification rules derived in the first investigation to a

Advancements occurred in the last century have gradually extended human lifespan. However, increased lifespan does not necessarily coincide with an equivalent extension of healthy life expectancy. The increasing gap of years between healthy and unhealthy life challenges individual aspirations for a meaningful longevity and strains the sustainability of health and social care systems. Aging remains the main risk factor for diseases, and comorbidity does not fully account for the disparities between healthy and unhealthy life expectancy. Moreover, disease-modifying and healthcare interventions r

Nucleosomes are the minimal repeating units of chromatin. Their dynamic assembly and disassembly underpins chromatin organization and genome regulation. However, it remains unclear how intrinsic nucleosome stability contributes to higher-level yet fundamental cellular and organismal properties-such as preservation of cell identity, lineage specification, stress resilience and ultimately healthy aging. To address this, we tested the impact of decreased intrinsic nucleosome stability across multiple cell, tissue and organismal models by introducing histone mutants that weaken histone-histone int

BACKGROUND: Several age-related oral health problems have been associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD). However, the distinction between oromotor dysfunctions in healthy aging and pathological aging remains unclear. This is partly because changes in the cortical and biomechanical ("neuromechanical") control of oromotor behaviour in healthy aging are poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate age-related changes in tongue and jaw kinematics during natural feeding behaviour in non-human primates.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Several reports inform an association between vascular aging and sarcopenia. However, both conditions appear along with aging. Therefore, their association may be circumstantial and not casually linked. Our aim was to determine if individuals with higher-than-expected vascular aging have a higher frequency of sarcopenia.
METHODS: In 802 participants we calculated the association between pulse wave pressure and carotid intima media thickness and age and blood pressure, to derive predictive regression equations. In 161 of these participants we measured body composition by dou

Healthy aging is the process of preserving and enhancing one's independence, physical and mental well-being, and overall quality of life. It involves the mental, emotional, and cognitive wellness. Although biological and genetic factors have a significant influence on the process of aging gracefully, other adjustable factors also play a crucial role. Adopting positive behaviors such as maintaining a nutritious and balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, effectively managing stress and anxiety, ensuring sufficient sleep, nurturing spiritual coping mechanisms, and prioritizing over

Cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO(2)), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) are important indices of healthy aging of the brain. Although a frequent topic of study, changes of CBF and CMRO(2) during normal aging are still controversial, as some authors find decreases of both CBF and CMRO(2) but increased OEF, while others find no change, and yet other find divergent changes. In this reanalysis of previously published results from positron emission tomography of healthy volunteers, we determined CMRO(2) and CBF in 66 healthy volunteers aged 21 to 81

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) develop visuospatial difficulties that affect their ability to mentally rotate objects. Surprisingly, the existing literature has generally ignored the impact of this mental rotation deficit on the ability of AD patients to recognize faces from different angles. Instead, the devastating loss of the ability to recognize friends and family members in AD has primarily been attributed to memory loss and agnosia in later stages of the disorder. The impact of AD on areas of the brain important for mental rotation

Attachment dimensions are relatively stable patterns that persist throughout the lifespan. However, longitudinal studies suggest that a partial reorganization of childhood attachment can be observed in old age. A large body of literature supports the idea that, in contrast to secure attachment, high levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance are associated with higher levels of negative mental health indicators and lower levels of physical health and quality of life. The aim of this literature review is to provide a comprehensive overview of research that can provide insights into the mechanis

The WHO concept of Healthy Ageing (ie, the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age) has initiated a global discussion about the need for shifting paradigms to reorient health and social services towards person-centred and coordinated models of care. In particular, the integration of health and social care services is critical to provide the basis for comprehensive information sharing and service delivery to support the evolution of the older person over time. The capability to monitor and respond to an older person's changing health and
