A complete audiological examination including impedance audiometry conducted in patients with otitis media purulenta chronica (n = 22), adhesive otitis media (n = 20), otosclerosis (n = 14) and family hypoacusis (n = 8) has detected signs of neurosensory hypoacusis (NH). Follow-up results indicated NH progression. Thus, affection of the middle ear manifests with symptoms of conductive and neurosensory hypoacusis. NH was treated surgically with temporary effect.

The results of international investigations on connatally acquired hearing loss are compared with the data of the German Registry on Childhood Hearing Loss (4058 cases). The connatal hearing disorders have shown a notable change in the last years regarding to aetiology and prevalence. In contrast to countries of the third world in developed nations the prevalence of permanent childhood hearing loss has been reduced down to 1 in 1.000 births. The results let assume a prevalence of approximately 1:1.200 births in Germany. For instance the number of rubella embryopathia decreased effectively. In

Weber fractions (delta I/I) for gated 500-ms tones at 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kHz, and at levels of the standard ranging from absolute threshold to 97 dB SPL, were measured in quiet and in high-pass noise in five listeners with cochlear hearing loss and in three normal-hearing listeners. In regions of hearing loss, the Weber fractions at a given SPL were sometimes normal. When the Weber fractions were normal or near-normal, the addition of high-pass noise elevated the Weber fraction, strongly suggesting the use of spread of excitation to higher frequencies. Inversely, when the Weber fractions we

This study compares frequency selectivity--as measured by four different methods--in observers with normal hearing and in observers with conductive (nonotosclerotic), otosclerotic, noise-induced, or degenerative hearing losses. Each category of loss was represented by a group of 7 to 10 observers, who were tested at center frequencies of 500 Hz and 4000 Hz. For each group, the following four measurements were made: psychoacoustical tuning curves, narrow-band masking, two-tone masking, and loudness summation. Results showed that (a) frequency selectivity was reduced at frequencies where a cochl

In 1873 consecutive patients referred for compensation assessment for presumed industrial hearing loss, 281 (15%) had an average difference in hearing threshold between the ears of 15 dB at 1/2, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. An unrelated cause was found in 115 (6%). It was due to trauma in 37 (2%), unexplained in 32 (1.7%) and attributed to noise exposure in 97 (5.2%). The possible mechanisms for noise as a cause are discussed and include shielding of one ear from noise, unequal recovery after severe noise exposure, and unequal sensitivity of the ears. After extensive investigation, including X-rays, vestib

INTRODUCTION: Neonates undergo neonatal hearing screening to detect congenital hearing loss at an early stage. Once confirmed, it is necessary to perform an etiological workup to start appropriate treatment. The study objective was to assess the different etiologies, risk factors, and hearing results of infants with permanent hearing loss and to evaluate the efficacy and consequences of the different screening devices over the last 21 years.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort analysis for all neonatal hearing screening program referrals and performed an etiological wor

OBJECTIVES: Premature infants are at high risk for hearing loss (HL). The aim of the present study is to assess the frequency of preterm infants affected by HL who experience hearing improvement over months and evaluate possible factors associated with hearing changes.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a third-level referral audiologic center. Preterm infants with a confirmed diagnosis of sensorineural HL within the first 3 months of life were reassessed at 18 months corrected age using the click-evoked auditory brainstem response between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2020. Acute lung injury (ALI) is a devastating inflammatory disease. In lungs with inflammation, microRNA155 (miR155) induces inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS1). In addition, glycyrrhizic acid (GA) has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory drug for ALI, since it is an efficient inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB. In this study, a combined delivery system of anti-miR155 oligonucleotides (AMO155) and GA was developed with R3V6 for the treatment of ALI. R3V6s formed comicelles with cholesterol-conjugated AMO155 (AMO155c) by charge and hydropho

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the causes of hearing loss found after failed universal newborn hearing screening and compared the results with the previously used behavioral observation test (Ewing/CAPAS).
STUDY DESIGN: Hearing loss in neonates, born between September 1999 and October 2007 and referred to our center after failed screening, was determined by audiologic testing and physical examination.
RESULTS: In 340 included neonates the results of hearing tests were as follows: normal hearing 21.2%, conductive hearing loss 20.3%, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) 57.9%. Children referred from

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the audiologic findings and medical status of infants who were found to have hearing loss, detected as part of the Identification of Neonatal Hearing Impairment (INHI) project. In addition, the neonatal and maternal health variables for the group of infants who could not be tested with visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) due to developmental and visual disability are presented.
DESIGN: The overall goal of the INHI project was to evaluate the test performance of auditory brain stem response and evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) tests given in the newborn per

Conductive hearing loss, produced by otitis media with effusion, is widespread in young children. However, little is known about its short- or long-term effects on hearing or the brain. To study the consequences of a conductive loss for the perception and processing of sounds, we plugged the left ear canal of ferrets for 7-15 months during either infancy or adulthood. Before or during plugging, the ferrets were trained to perform a binaural task requiring the detection of a 500 Hz tone, positioned 90 degrees to the right, that was masked by two sources of broad-band noise. In one condition ("c

The common form of hardness of hearing seen in old age is not, in the first instance, due to physiological age-related changes as is, for example, presbyopia, but rather to a complex sensorineural pattern of injury. The underlying causes are not yet fully understood. Typical medical risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc. apparently play a smaller role than increasing environmental noise and modern life styles. The various forms of presbyacusis and their presentation in the pure tone audiogram are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Despite previous research into the psychosocial impact of hearing loss, little detail is known regarding the hearing and hearing-aid-related emotional states experienced by adults with hearing loss in everyday life, and how they occur.
DESIGN: Individual remote semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and qualitatively analysed with reflexive and inductive thematic analysis.
STUDY SAMPLE: Seventeen participants (9 female) with hearing loss (age range 44-74 years) participated. Ten used bilateral hearing aids, four unilateral and three used no hearing ai

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a common condition and there is a need to evaluate effects of tinnitus management in relation to moderating factors such as degree of hearing loss. As it is possible that tinnitus influences concentration, and thus is likely to disturb cognitive processing, the role of cognitive functioning also needs to be investigated.
PURPOSE: To compare a group of patients with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus to a control group with only sensorineural hearing loss (and no tinnitus). To investigate working memory, sleep, and hearing problems measured before and after hearing

OBJECT: No extant literature documents the analysis of patient perceptions of hearing as a corollary to objective audiometric measures in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS), or acoustic neuroma. Therefore, using objective audiometric data and patient perceptions of hearing function as outlined on a questionnaire, the authors evaluated the hearing of patients who underwent VS resection.
METHODS: This investigation involved a retrospective review of 176 patients who had undergone VS resections in which hearing preservation was a goal. Both pre- and postoperative audiometry, expressed as a

RATIONALE: This is an update of an existing review. The main clinical intervention for mild to moderate hearing loss is the provision of hearing aids, which amplify speech in addition to environmental sounds. Hearing aids are routinely offered and fitted to those who seek help for hearing difficulties. Since the previous 2017 review, further randomised-controlled trials (RCTs) have been published. This review updates the certainty of the evidence and assesses two additional outcomes: mental health and cognition.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of hearing aids in adults with mil
