Hearing disability and hearing aid benefit related to type of hearing impairment.

This study was designed to investigate whether patients with a conductive hearing impairment derive more benefit from the provision of a hearing aid than comparable individuals with a sensorineural hearing impairment. A secondary aim was to assess the relative hearing disability of those with each type of impairment. Twenty-eight patients with a bilateral, symmetrical conductive impairment were selected. They were matched for age, sex and speech frequency average to individuals with a bilateral, symmetrical sensorineural hearing impairment. Each patient performed free-field audio and audio-vis

[The bone-anchored hearing aid].

The bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha) was introduced in 1977 by Tjellström and colleagues and has now been used clinically for over 30 years. Generally, the outcomes are good, and several studies have shown improved audiological- and quality of life outcomes. The principle of the Baha is, that sound vibrations are led directly to the inner ear via the mastoid bone, bypassing the middle ear. This is achieved via an osseointegrated implant and a skin-penetrating abutment. Studies report high success rates and a majority of complications as typically minor in nature.

Hearing aid compliance in the elderly.

OBJECTIVES: A decreasing but still substantial proportion of elderly persons with hearing aids use them only occasionally. Because the prevalence of age-related hearing loss is increasing, it is important for the hearing rehabilitation process to be effective. The aim of this study was to use a mailed questionnaire to evaluate the rate of hearing aid use and the reasons for minimal use or nonuse. METHODS: Questions about hearing aid use and associated problems were included in a survey of hearing mailed to 4,067 people in age cohorts of 70, 75, 80 and 85 years in an industrialized urban commu

Multi-programmable hearing aid.

A basic problem in hearing-aid fitting is the difficulty in finding one setting optimal to all listening situations that might occur. The objective was to develop a behind-the-ear hearing-aid with a very flexible analog signal processor which is digitally controlled, and a memory with logic, so that the hearing-impaired person can select from eight completely different fittings. To program and adjust this multi-programmable hearing-aid (called MemoryMate) a hearing evaluation and recommendation system (called Master-Fit) has been developed, based on an IBM PS/2 computer. [Objective hearing aid fitting].

In many cases speech and pure tone audiometry are not practicable. Therefore, the hearing aid fitting is based on objective techniques, like the measurement of the stapedius-reflex threshold or acoustically evoked neural responses. In particular, brain stem responses are very helpful for an objective hearing-aid fitting. They represent the full scale of hearing dynamics and supply direct information for selection and adjustment of the hearing aid. Control of the fitting can also be effected directly by measuring brain stem responses.

The benefit of hearing aids: influence of hearing loss and age.

The relation between accessible benefit and hearing loss in combination with age of the patient is analysed. The degree of hearing loss and improvement derived by hearing aid use as found in this work is based on the individually determined speech reception threshold (SRT) for the condition with and without hearing aid in a noiseless environment. It was found that a significant correlation exists between hearing loss and SRT gain by the hearing aid (difference between unaided and aided speech reception threshold) for a pure-tone hearing loss of less than 40 dB at 500 Hz, irrespective of age, w

[Hearing aid provision in children].

Achieving high-quality hearing aid fitting in children is an interdisciplinary task and a challenge for all involved specialist disciplines. According to quality agreements (standards), comparative hearing aid fitting is mandatory prior to prescription. Furthermore, RECD measurements and, in older children, in-situ measurements should be applied on a regular basis for finetuning and adjustment of the hearing aid fitting. ENT physicians, phoniatricians and pediatric audiologists, pediatric acousticians, teachers of the hearing impaired, and special educational needs teachers should work togethe

[Hearing Aid Fitting in Adults].

The identification and treatment of hearing disorders belong to the fundamental tasks of an ENT-specialist. In this context the fitting of hearing aids has a special relevance. To verify a highly qualified medical care the knowledge of the audiological threshold values for the indication of the fitting of hearing aids and the detection of early signs for impaired communication are essential. The current quality assurance agreement defines technical and steric conditions pertaining to hearing aid fitting in the context of statutory health insurance. Only after approval of these postulated requi

[Check of hearing aid fitting].

A qualified hearing aid fitting is only possible if the ENT doctor not only prescribes the device, but also conscientiously checks the comparative adjustments made by the hearing aid acoustician. In deciding, which of the tested hearing aids achieves the best and most appropriate improvement of hearing, the physician should first thoroughly study the acoustician's fitting protocol, which contains comparative results of all devices tested. The subjective satisfaction of the patient with his hearing aid can be determined in a detailed conversation or with a special questionnaire. The examination

Methods for the evaluation of hearing aids.

Methods of hearing-aid evaluation are sub-divided into four broad categories, prescriptive selective amplification, selection from a set of existing hearing aids, use of a fixed frequency-gain characteristic, and adaptive fitting of a master hearing aid. The advantages, disadvantages, and controversies associated with each approach are reviewed and major research needs are discussed in the light of this review. Among the more important research needs are i) the development of improved speech tests that have low test-retest variability and which can discriminate between hearing aids with much g

Shared experiences among successful hearing aid users with high hearing aid self-efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: While targeted rehabilitation can enhance hearing aid self-efficacy (HASE), little research has been done to determine the factors contributing to its predictive value. By investigating the experiences of individuals who successfully use HAs and have high levels of HASE, we hoped to illuminate specific strategies and/or sources of support these individuals share that might explain why high HASE is often linked to successful outcomes. DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: This qualitative study explored the experiences of five older adults who were successful HA users and reported having high HA

The bone-anchored hearing aid compared with conventional hearing aids. Audiologic results and the patients' opinions.

The bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) was evaluated in 65 patients by comparing speech recognition and questionnaire results with those obtained with the patients' own previous hearing aids. In the majority of patients who previously used a conventional bone conductor, significantly improved speech recognition scores were found with the BAHA. The majority preferred the BAHA to their previous bone conductors. For the patients who previously used air conduction hearing aids but had to stop because of chronic draining ears, the results were ambiguous. Nevertheless, the BAHA seems to be the best so

[Treating age-related hearing loss: hearing aids are not very popular].

Presbycusis means the deterioration of hearing resulting from the ageing process. Presbycusis can greatly affect one's quality of life; impaired hearing restricts communication and untreated presbycusis could result in social isolation and even depression. Nevertheless, only a minority of elderly with impaired hearing use a hearing aid. It is preferable to propose a hearing-aid fitting in the earliest stage possible, provided the current reimbursement criteria are met. The Dutch consensus model ('Veldnorm Hoortoestelverstrekking 2009') is the most important guideline in this regard.

Hearing-aids: can they be safely prescribed without medical supervision? An analysis of patients referred for hearing-aids.

A prospective study of 169 patients with hearing loss as their main symptom, referred to the ENT Clinic by General Practitioners, is reported. The study aimed to assess the safety of prescribing hearing aids by Physiological Measurement Technicians from the Audiology Department without medical supervision. The General Practitioners' referral letter and patients' histories were analysed to see if all cases of middle ear disease would be picked up from this information alone. In this study, 31 patients had otoscopic evidence of chronic otitis media, active or inactive, only 14 (45.2%) of whom we

Adolescents' Attitudes and Perceptions Toward Peers with Hearing Aids: The Hearing Aid Effect in the Mid-2020s.

BACKGROUND: Negative perceptions related to appearance, personality, and intelligence may exist among peers toward adolescents who use hearing aids. This phenomenon, known as the "hearing aid effect," may discourage adolescents from using their devices. Understanding peers' attitudes and perceptions is crucial for promoting social acceptance and developing educational programs that foster positive perceptions of hearing aid users. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine adolescents' attitudes and perceptions toward peers using hearing aids and to investigate the relationship between adolescents'
