[Hearing disorders in 3- to 12-year-olds].

The hearing disorders of the child between 3 and 12 years are dominated by the conductive hearing loss. The questioning, looking for risk factors, as well as the otoscopy are essential to detect and diagnose a hearing disorder. Screening tests help to identify the children with risk of hearing loss. Then, the child is sent for diagnosis towards an ENT specialist or a specialized structure. In spite of the frequency of the conductive hearing loss, in case of the slightest doubt, a sensorineural hearing loss must be always looked for by a puretone audiometry examination via the headphones.

Hearing organ disorders in patients with systemic sclerosis.

In systemic sclerosis (SSc), there may develop hearing and balance disorders as a result of the immune-mediated vasculitis and fibrosis in the inner ear. The objective of the study was evaluation of the hearing organ function in patients with SSc with relationship to duration of the disease and Raynaud phenomenon and also to type and severity of the disease. Twenty unselected, consecutive patients with SSc diagnosed in compliance with the international diagnostic criteria of the American Rheumatism Association (1982), were enrolled into the study. The control group consisted of 26 otologically

Cochlear stem cells/progenitors and degenerative hearing disorders.

Hearing loss (deafness) affects approximately 250 million people globally. The major cause of deafness is loss of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons due to aging, antibiotic use, noise exposure, and genetic defects. At the present time, there is no effective method for restoration of hearing biologically. Cochlear stem cells/progenitors (CSCs), quiescent in the organ of Corti, are excellent candidates for restoration of cell types in the organ of Corti biologically. However, little is known about the biology of CSCs and developmental cues for CSCs to differentiate into hair cells and neuro

[Particularities of hearing disorders in inhabitants of Mali].

Audiologic examinations of the Mali people showed that neurosensory hypoacusis was the most common hearing problem, the incidence of which tended to increase. Altogether 147 patients (or 294 ears), aged 10 to 60 years, were examined, the duration of their hearing impairment varying from 1 month to 20 years. In terms of the pathological causes, all the patients were divided into 3 groups: 1) ototoxic antibiotics and quinine, 2) cerebrospinal meningitis, and 3) infectious disease. The patients underwent tonal threshold, suprathreshold and speech audiometry and showed impairment of primarily peri

[Screening for hearing disorders. Current status and bottlenecks].

In The Netherlands a nation-wide screening program on hearing for infants is available. This program started around the late sixties and is now incorporated in the Health Care System and added to the tasks of the Well Baby Clinics. A modification of the method as developed by the Ewings is used. This method is relatively easy to learn. It is, however, essential that it is executed accurately and with a maximum of care. Therefore the testing itself as well as the assessment of the results is strictly standardized and a lot of attention is given to the training program. The Dutch Foundation for

[Do hemoglobinopathies correlate with genetically-induced hearing disorders?].

In hereditary deafness a battery of audiological and medical investigations are needed to find out the aetiological factors. We tested the blood of children impaired hearing for hemoglobinopathies. Such anomalies might provide a clue to the aetiology. We found abnormal structures of hemoglobin in 5 children suffering from Fanconi's anemia. Four of these children had prenatal conductive hearing loss. The other children showed no abnormal hemoglobin.

[Hearing and equilibrium disorders in patients with neurosyphilis].

83 patients with neurosyphilis and 12 patients with latent syphilis underwent a cochleovestibular examination. Pathological changes were present in 54% of the patients with neurosyphilis. In the group of patients with latent syphilis functional changes could only be found in 25% of the patients. The greatest number of hearing disturbances occurred in persons suffering from general paresis, 65% were affected. Usually damage occurred in both ears. Specific topical diagnosis was often not possible although the results of the stapedial reflex indicated that peripheral cochlear lesions were present

Hearing loss and tinnitus: association studies for complex-hearing disorders in mouse and man.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide an unbiased first look at genetic loci involved in aging and noise-induced sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. The hearing phenotype, whether audiogram-based or self-report, is regressed against genotyped information at representative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the genome. Findings include the fact that both hearing loss and tinnitus are polygenic disorders, with up to thousands of genes, each of effect size of < 0.02. Smaller human GWAS' were able to use objective measures and identified a few loci; however, hundreds of th

Hearing Loss and Blood Coagulation Disorders: A Review.

A relationship between microvascular disorders and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been widely proposed. The vascular hypothesis, theorized for the onset of sudden SNHL (SSNHL), is among the most acknowledged: a localized acute cochlear damage, of ischemic or haemorrhagic nature, could be considered a causative factor of SSNHL. The aim of this review is to assess (i) the effect on hearing in patients affected by blood coagulation disorders (prothrombotic or haemorrhagic) and (ii) the possible etiopathogenetic mechanisms of the related hearing loss. A PRISMA-compliant review was performed

Acute hearing loss in patients with hematological disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study adopted an inner ear test battery to investigate the causes of acute sensorineural hearing loss in patients with hematological disorders. METHODS: During the past 20 years, the authors have experienced 14 patients with hematological disorders, i.e. leukemia or aplastic anemia, having acute sensorineural hearing loss. An inner ear test battery comprising audiometry and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP), ocular VEMP (oVEMP), and caloric tests was performed. RESULTS: Diagnoses comprised of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in 12 patients and endolymphat

Sensorineural hearing loss in primary antibody deficiency disorders.

To evaluate the hearing function in patients affected by primary antibody deficiency disorders. Forty-seven patients, 25 of whom were affected by X-linked agammaglobulinemia and 22 of whom were affected by common variable immunodeficiency were evaluated with audiologic tests that included pure tone audiometry, acoustic immittance assessment and auditory brainstem-evoked response. Eighteen patients (38%), 7 with X-linked agammaglobulinemia and 11 with common variable immunodeficiency, showed sensorineural hearing loss, bilateral in 12 and unilateral in 6. Our data underline the high frequency o

Metabolic disorders in vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

Vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss are common complaints among populations of industrial countries, especially in persons older than 40 years. Numerous agents are known to incite vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss, among them hyperinsulinemia, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. In this study, we proposed to assess the occurrence of hyperinsulinemia, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia in patients suffering from vertigo, tinnitus, or hearing loss of unknown origin. Results of various tests in 48 patients were compared to those in 31 control subjects. Assessments of body mass index, bloo

Immunologic alterations in patients with sensorineural hearing disorders.

The autoimmune etiology suspected for some forms of hearing loss, supported by the clinical efficacy of steroid therapy, is thought to involve immune complexes, autoantibodies directed to the inner ear and/or cellular effectors. We report a study performed in 57 individuals with sudden deafness (n = 17, group 1) or progressive sensorineural hearing impairment (n = 40, group 2). A severe depletion in CD3+ and CD4+ peripheral lymphocytes was observed in group 1 and a marked decrease of CD8+ cells levels was observed in both groups. Group 2 patients frequently had anti-nuclear and anti-thyroid an
