Degree of Hearing Loss Affects Bilateral Hearing Aid Benefits in Ecologically Relevant Laboratory Conditions.

Purpose Previous evidence supports benefits of bilateral hearing aids, relative to unilateral hearing aid use, in laboratory environments using audio-only (AO) stimuli and relatively simple tasks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate bilateral hearing aid benefits in ecologically relevant laboratory settings, with and without visual cues. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between bilateral benefit and clinically viable predictive variables. Method Participants included 32 adult listeners with hearing loss ranging from mild-moderate to severe-profound. Test conditions varied by he

Case Report: Leptospirosis Complicated by Persistent, Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

The clinical manifestations of leptospirosis range from mild to life-threatening and can impact on multiple organ systems. A wide array of neurological manifestations of leptospirosis have been reported, although the pathophysiology of neuroleptospirosis remains incompletely understood. We present a case of leptospirosis complicated by bilateral sensorineural deafness, with nodular meningitis demonstrated in the internal auditory meatus on magnetic resonance imaging. The patient was treated with doxycycline, ceftriaxone, systemic and topical steroids, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with modest

Bilateral Nonsyndromic Sensorineural Hearing Loss Caused by a NARS2 Mutation.

Mitochondrial diseases disrupt the process of energy generation by the mitochondria, leading to manifestations that can affect almost any organ in the body. Although various possible clinical phenotypes can result, neurological and neuromuscular affection is most frequently encountered. NARS2 encodes an enzyme responsible for the conjugation of asparagine to its cognate mitochondrial transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) molecule, representing an essential step necessary for effective mitochondrial protein synthesis. As such, mutations in this gene can lead to poor mitochondrial gene expression and

Primary presentation of sarcoidosis with profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

We present a case of a 7-year-old Afro-Caribbean girl presenting with rapidly progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. She was found to have an elevated Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and mediastinal lymphadenopathy containing non-caseating granulomas with multinucleate giant cells, in keeping with sarcoidosis. Cranial imaging demonstrated labyrinthitis. She underwent urgent bilateral cochlear implantation with rehabilitation of hearing sufficient to restart education within 1 month.

Improvement of sudden bilateral hearing loss after vertebral artery stenting.

Bilateral deafness is a rare but possible symptom of vertebrobasilar ischemia. We report a case of sudden bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by bilateral vertebral artery (VA) occlusion which dramatically improved after stenting. A 54-year-old man was admitted with sudden onset of bilateral deafness, vertigo, and drowsy mental status. Brain diffusion-weighted MRI showed acute infarction involving both the posterior inferior cerebellar artery and left posterior cerebral artery territory. Cerebral angiography showed bilateral distal VA occlusion, and emergency intracranial stenting was

Bilateral middle cranial fossa encephaloceles presenting as conductive hearing loss.

We report a case involving a patient with bilateral middle cranial fossa encephaloceles extending into the middle ear and causing conductive hearing loss. An obese, 47-year-old woman with a history of a seizure disorder presented with a slow-onset subjective hearing loss. Examination revealed opaque tympanic membranes, and audiometry showed a mixed hearing loss bilaterally. Myringotomy demonstrated soft tissue behind each tympanic membrane. Biopsy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mastoidectomy confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral middle cranial fossa encephaloceles. Bilate

Progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss induced by an antithyroid drug.

We report a patient with antithyroid drug-induced progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss associated with myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (MPO-ANCA). While antithyroid drugs have been linked to MPO-ANCA-associated small-vessel vasculitis, sensorineural hearing loss rarely was noted. A 36-year-old man treated for hyperthyroidism with propylthiouracil (PTU) developed progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by fever and arthritis. MPO-ANCA were demonstrated in serum. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions test results suggested dysfunction of

Bilateral idiopathic loss of peripheral vestibular function with normal hearing.

From 1982 to 1993, 52 electronystagmograms (FNG) revealed an absent nystagmic reaction on both caloric (44 30 and 10 degrees C water irrigation) and rotatory pendular testing (0.05 Hz/peak velocity 60 degrees/s), which represents 0.6% of all FNG performed during this period. Among these examinations, 14 patients (27%) presented a bilateral idiopathic loss of vestibular function (BILVF) with normal hearing and without associated neurological symptoms. Two different groups emerged: one group with simultaneous onset of BILVF ( 10 patients), with sudden imbalance and disequilibrium, worse in darkn

[Bilateral congenital profound hearing loss and hypospadias--a new syndrome?].

Five children with hypospadia and profound hearing loss were presented to the Clinic for Speech and Communication Disorders of the University of Mainz. Anamnestic and laboratory investigations strongly suggest, that the malformations are interrelated and may represent a new syndrome. Therefore it appears to be helpful to carry out a routine hearing check in children, who are hospitalized for the first surgical treatment of hypospadias.

Hearing in Noise With Unilateral Versus Bilateral Bone Conduction Hearing Aids in Adults With Pseudo-conductive Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: The role of bilateral bone conduction amplification in patients with bilateral conductive hearing loss is unclear because cranial attenuation is usually considered negligible, and both cochleae can be stimulated with similar efficacy by each device. The aim of the study was to determine if bilateral bone-conduction hearing aids can improve hearing in noise in a homogeneous group of normal-hearing subjects with bilateral pseudo-conductive hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, comparative. SETTING: Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in University of Haifa, Israel.

A review of bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Bilateral, sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in the pediatric population is a rare phenomenon potentially detrimental to language acquisition and social development. This study comprehensively reviews and analyzes existing literature to determine any correlation or commonality in etiologies, presentations, and management of this condition. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for articles related to pediatric SSNHL from 1970 to 2021. Case series, case reports, and cohort studies were included. Data on patient demograph

Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss in the Setting of Acute Methamphetamine Overdose.

Substance abuse is a rare but known cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We report a case of acute SNHL in a 28-year-old man following an overdose of methamphetamine and incidental ingestion of fentanyl. On initial encounter, he had moderate-to-severe hearing loss in the right ear and severe-to-profound hearing loss in the left ear in addition to acute kidney injury, liver failure, and lactic acidosis. The patient was treated with a two-week course of high-dose steroids and expressed a subjective improvement in hearing. This case highlights the importance of auditory testing following a

Bilateral hearing loss as an initial presentation of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

We reported a case of a 61-year-old male patient with anacusis, cerebellar syndrome, myoclonus, and frontal signs. The brain magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral striated hyperintensity of the fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and restricted diffusion in the diffusion-weighted imaging and hypointense areas corresponding to the apparent diffusion coefficient in the cerebral cortex. The autopsy revealed positive immunohistochemistry for the PrPSc protein. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease presenting with hearing loss is unusual.

Systematic review of the etiology of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in children.

OBJECTIVE: Identification of the etiology of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children facilitates management and provides important prognostic information. In recent years, the etiology of bilateral SNHL in children has changed due to advances in genetic testing and treatment of perinatal infections. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of etiologies of moderate-profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children. METHODS: The English literature was searched in Medline for articles published between 1966 and 2002. The inclusion criteria were studies inv
