Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by systemic dysfunction of exocrine glands, mainly the salivary and lachrymal glands. Sjögren's syndrome consists of two forms: primary Sjögren's syndrome, which is characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth without autoimmune diseases; and secondary Sjögren's syndrome, which is characterized by symptoms associated with other autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Disease severities vary considerably from mild glandular dryness to severe glandular involvement with numerous extraglandular and systemic features. Se

In our systematic research we identified four studies concerning the onset of neurological adverse events following vaccination and two excluding this association. A 33-year-old Italian man, belonging to the Italian Army was hospitalized because he suffered from vertigo, nausea and sudden right hearing loss not classified (NDD), that set in 24 h after the administration of tetanus-diphtheria and meningococcal vaccines. Some neurological events arising after vaccination are very difficult to treat. In our case, the functional recovery on low and medium frequencies was possible about 6 months af

OBJECTIVE: This study adopted an inner ear test battery and MR imaging in patients with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) to investigate their causes, disease extent, and evaluate hearing outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1995 to 2014, 16 patients with bilateral SSNHL received audiometry, caloric test and MR imaging. Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test was added to the test battery after 2000.
RESULTS: Percentages of abnormal mean hearing level (MHL), cervical VEMP test, ocular VEMP test, and caloric test in patients with bilateral SSNHL were 100% (32/32), 10

INTRODUCTION: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a frightening and frustrating symptom for the patient as well as the physician. Prognosis is affected by multiple factors including duration of hearing loss, presence of associated vertigo and tinnitus, and co-morbidities such as hypertension and diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty subjects presenting to our department with features of sudden hearing loss were included in the study. Detailed otological history and examination, serial audiometric findings and course of disease were studied.
RESULTS: Subjects presenting late (in old

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is defined as sudden, idiopathic, usually unilateral deafness developed at most within 72 hours in previously healthy person. This paper presents very rarely occurring case of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in 23-year-old healthy nulliparous women during an uncomplicated pregnancy. The possibility of therapy of that sudden deafness in pregnant women is restricted by reason of unknown cause of disease. It has been hypothesized that hearing loss may be associated with increased activation of both blood coagulation and fibrinolysis ('hypercoagulable state') wh

Hearing is one of the most significant senses; therefore, any loss can be frightening. Previous studies have found that certain surgical and medical procedures can result in hearing loss. Cardiac surgical procedures are most commonly associated with hearing loss owing to the use of the cardiopulmonary bypass pump. Other noncardiac, nonotologic surgical procedures also may result in hearing loss. Additionally, medical procedures such as myelogram and lumbar puncture have been associated with hearing loss. Studies suggest that hearing loss can result any time cerebrospinal fluid is leaked. This

The imaging evaluation of patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) focuses on the acoustic pathways from the cochlea to the auditory cortex. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for most patients with SNHL, though computed tomography (CT) also plays an important role in the evaluation of bony changes and in patients for whom MRI is contraindicated. Conventional enhanced MRI is the most commonly used technique in this clinical setting. High-resolution fast spin-echo T2 MRI is an adjunctive technique that provides exquisite evaluation of the cerebellopontine angle (C

An auto-immune progressive sensorineural hearing loss (PSNHL) can occur as one of the clinical features of systemic immune-mediated disorders, such as Cogan's syndrome, Behçet's disease, Wegener's granulomatosis, mixed cryoglobulinaemia, systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, giant cell arteritis, panarteritis nodosa, relapsing polychondritis, unclassified systemic vasculitides, etc, or as a distinct clinical entity, the so-called auto-immune inner ear disease. The clinical evolution of the hearing loss during the course of the systemic disease is extremely variable (slowly progress

Prevalence of progressive sensorineural hearing loss in childhood seems to be extremely variable, as percentages reported range from 4 to 30%. Differences in the criteria employed for identifying the deterioration, in the groups of patients, and the age range, could explain this wide range of reported figures. The etiology of the progressive sensorineural hearing loss in infants can be hereditary or acquired. Hereditary causes are divided into syndromic and non-syndromic, whereas the acquired causes include congenital or acquired infection (syphilis, cytomegalovirus, rubella virus and toxoplas

Hearing function was tested in 20 patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Audiological examination was performed by pure tone audiometry thresholds, tympanometry, a stapedial reflex threshold test and auditory brainstem responses (ABR). Hearing impairment was observed in 55% of patients. Conductive hearing loss and the absence of stapedius reflex were never recorded. Five patients with abnormal audiograms had normal ABR and normal stapedial reflex thresholds while 6 patients showed abnormalities in their audiograms, stapedial reflex thresholds test and ABR. Abnormal audiometric results asso

Examination was made of the records of school-aged children with a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who were seen for audiological assessment in the period 1984 to 1986. These records formed the basis of an investigation, reported in this paper, into the prevalence of progressive sensorineural hearing loss, the causes of hearing impairment in these children, the ages at which deterioriation occurs and the patterns of progression in terms of audiogram shape and symmetry. A figure of 9% was found for prevalence, but arguments are put forward to show that this is probably a minimum figure and

The authors present a report of 280 cases of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (U.H.L.) in children, observed from 1979 to 1986 in the Bambino Gesu' Hospital in Rome. Only 23.2% of these hearing impairments were due to a known etiology (mainly mumps infection). In the majority of the cases (79.3%) the hearing loss was profound. The authors discuss the methods for the etiological diagnosis and the possibility of prophylaxis both of U.H.L. and of communication difficulties.

The hearing loss of 21 patients with hypoparathyroidism was investigated by pure tone audiometry, short increment sensitivity index (SISI) test, Békésy audiometry, speech audiometry, and auditory brain stem response. Sensorineural hearing loss was found in 7 of 21 patients (13 of 42 ears) receiving no treatment for hypoparathyroidism or having chronic hypocalcemia. The high SISI score, presence of recruitment, and prolongation of the wave I (N1) latency suggested that the inner ear is responsible for hearing loss in these cases. Inner ear dysfunction was probably due to the low calcium level i

Controversy exists as to whether individuals with stapedial otosclerosis have elevated bone conduction thresholds due to cochlear involvement by the focus. A comparison was made between the Carhart-corrected bone conduction thresholds in 45 unoperated, non-noise-exposed individuals with stapedial otosclerosis and the thresholds in a matched random sample of the population with no conductive hearing loss. No consistent, significant difference was discerned. It is considered that individuals with stapedial otosclerosis do not in general have elevated bone conduction thresholds compared with cont

Additional evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that both acute purulent otitis media (POM) and chronic suppurative otitis media (COM) can cause high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. In selected patients and in animals (chinchillas) in a pilot study using electrophysiological methods, both temporary threshold shifts and permanent threshold shifts of basal cochlear turn involvement were demonstrated in POM. Data of cochlear involvement in 475 ears with bilateral COM, 607 ears with unilateral COM, and 607 ears serving as controls were obtained from six centers in five countries.

A prospective study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of sensorineural hearing loss in bullous myringitis. Fifteen patients with 21 ears diagnosed as bullous myringitis were seen over a 24-month period. Pure tone and speech audiometry were performed as early in the clinical course as possible; 7 ears demonstrated a sensorineural hearing loss and 7 ears a mixed loss. There were no purely conductive hearing losses. Recovery of hearing was complete in 8 of 14 ears. The findings of this study suggest that sensorineural hearing loss is common in bullous myringitis. The literature regardin

Delay of the acoustic reflex is concerning the latency and the rise-time of the response. The magnitude of these parameters is correlated with the stimulus characteristics but it is also modified by the instrumentation. Normative data obtained with commercial instruments demonstrate statistically meaningful differences of latency depending on age groups, ipsi-or contralateral recording, monophasic or biphasic deflection, which is also a normal response in about 12% of ears. The value are comprised within 150 ms for ipsilateral recording and 200 ms for the contralateral recording. The interaura
