Sudden hearing loss associated with methylphenidate therapy.

An 8-year-old child diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder presented to our Department of Otolaryngology 4 days after suffering hearing loss, loss of balance, tinnitus, and fullness sensation of the left ear. Her symptoms occured with the first dose of methylphenidate. The medical history and physical examination revealed no other diseases associated with sudden hearing loss. The audiogram revealed a total hearing loss on the left ear. Stapedial reflexes, distortion product and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions were absent in left ear. The absence of clinical, laboratory

Antivirals for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) is characterised by sudden loss of hearing of cochlear or retro-cochlear origin without an identifiable cause. Antivirals are commonly prescribed, but there is no consensus on the treatment regimen or their effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and side effect profile of antivirals in the treatment of ISSHL. SEARCH METHODS: We systematically searched the Cochrane Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Group Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2012, Issu

Unilateral sudden hearing loss due to otosyphilis.

The differential diagnosis of sudden hearing loss is very extensive. However, in most patients, no underlying pathology will be found and the patient is consequently diagnosed with idiopathic sudden hearing loss. Nevertheless, it is important that one stays alert in everyday routine practice to less common but potentially treatable pathology. We report a case of a 53-year old patient with sudden unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus caused by otosyphilis. Diagnosis, therapy and the incidence of (oto)syphilis are discussed. Also, as ENT-surgeons, it is important to realise that syphilis is still

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss associated with vardenafil.

The phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors-sildenafil, vardenafil, and tadalafil-are used primarily in erectile dysfunction, but sildenafil is also indicated for pulmonary hypertension. Common adverse effects of vardenafil include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia, and nausea. Recently, PDE-5 inhibitors have been associated with adverse vision effects, and emerging evidence now indicates that they may also be responsible for hearing changes and hearing loss. We describe a patient who developed unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss possibly related to the use of varden

Sudden hearing loss following non-petrous craniotomy.

We present two patients with known otosclerosis undergoing craniotomy for conditions unrelated to the temporal bone who experienced sudden sensorineural hearing loss. In both patients, the hearing loss was noted immediately post-operatively and there was no subsequent recovery. Sudden hearing loss is a rare complication of non-otologic, non-cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. To our knowledge it has not been described in patients with otosclerosis undergoing craniotomy. This is a rare event that may occur in patients with vulnerable ears, such as those with otosclerosis or pre-existing sensorineur

Sudden bilateral sensorineural hearing loss following speedballing.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is an infrequently-reported consequence of recreational drug abuse. Although there are sporadic reports of hearing loss from heroin and cocaine ingested separately, there are no reports of hearing loss resulting from the combination of both drugs ingested simultaneously in the form of speedballing. PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to document a case of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss associated with an episode of speedballing. RESEARCH DESIGN: Case Report. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: The subject of this report was a 40-year-old man with a 20-year histor

[Sudden-onset bilateral hearing loss: case report].

An ischaemic infarction of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) is usually associated with vertigo, hearing loss, facial palsy, nystagmus, or truncal ataxia; it is often accompanied by other brainstem or cerebellar signs. Sudden- onset bilateral hearing loss without associated neurological symptoms is infrequent in the literature. We report a case of sudden bilateral hearing loss, later diagnosed as AICA infarction without other symptoms.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss: evidence from Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses 5-year population data to determine the incidence rate of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in Taiwan, taking into consideration the age and gender of patients, as well as seasonal variations. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional study. METHOD: The data used is from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database covering the period from 1998 to 2002. A total of 9,267 sample patients were identified from the database by a principal diagnosis of unspecified sudden hearing loss (ICD-9-CM code 3882). The autoregressive integrated moving average

Sudden hearing loss and unstable angina pectoris.

Acute sudden sensorineural hearing loss has been extensively described in the literature and is a well recognized clinical entity. The exact etiology for this entity has been difficult to ascertain. Multiple etiologies have been promoted including infectious agents, vascular abnormalities, acoustic trauma, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune syndromes. In some cases, neoplasms such as acoustic neurinoma can be identified. On occasion, ototoxic medications are present in the history. Moulonguet and Gougelot have associated mitral valve prolapse, microemboli, transient hemiparesis and sudden hea

Sudden hearing loss in acoustic neuroma patients.

Patients with acoustic neuroma may have sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Most patients with sudden hearing loss seek medical attention promptly, but the diagnosis of an acoustic neuroma may be delayed for months or years because sudden hearing loss is an unusual initial symptom of an acoustic neuroma. In a retrospective review of 836 cases of sudden hearing loss, we found 13 patients with acoustic neuromas. The prevalence of acoustic neuromas for those screened with auditory brain stem response or magnetic resonance imaging was 2.5%. In addition to these 13 patients, 79 acoustic neuroma pati

Treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

A retrospective review was done, examining the charts of 41 patients admitted to The Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh with a diagnosis of sudden hearing loss (SHL). Treatment consisted of (1) systemic steroids; (2) daily intravenous histamine infusion; and (3) carbogen (95% oxygen and 5% CO2) inhalation. Parameters examined included age, sex, duration of symptoms prior to admission, days hospitalized, side of lesion, vestibular symptoms, tinnitus, blood work, radiography, vestibular function (ENG), and serial audiograms. Fifty-four percent showed improvement in hearing, defined as at least a

Sudden hearing loss and cerebellopontine angle tumors.

Lesions of the cerebellopontine angle may cause a sudden hearing loss. To illustrate and reaffirm the importance of a thorough neurotologic evaluation we performed a retrospective review of the audiologic and clinical data available on 506 patients with proven lesions of the cerebellopontine angle. Seventy-seven patients (15.2%) were found to have a history commensurate with sudden hearing loss. We reviewed the relevant audiologic data as well as the clinical circumstances of this select patient population.

[Psychogenic hearing impairment in differential diagnosis of sudden hearing loss].

INTRODUCTION: Acute hearing impairment or deafhess may manifest as unilateral or bilateral. The etiopathogenetic substrate may be organic, functional and of unknown origin, the so-called idiopathic. The functional causes of impaired hearing and deafness also include psychogenic factors, where the essential dysfunction exists between the conscious simulation of hearing impairment and deafness for benefits versus psychogenic hearing impairment in conversion disorders where physical symptoms result as a symbolic expression of long-term psychological problems or conflicts. Acute hearing impairment

Accelerated Long-Term Hearing Loss Progression After Recovery From Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Background and Introduction: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is characterized by rapid onset, typically unilateral presentation, and variable recovery. This case-control observational study aimed to improve patient counseling by objectively characterizing long-term hearing loss progression following ISSNHL, using sequential audiometry in the largest-to-date cohort of patients with ISSNHL. Methods: Patients diagnosed with ISSNHL at a tertiary referral hospital from 1994 through 2018 with sequential audiometry were studied. Case controls with sensorineural hearing loss (SNH

Hearing Recovery in Patients Treated for Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to hearing recovery in patients treated for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). METHOD: This study included 36 participants (23 men, 13 women) diagnosed with unilateral SSNHL. The inclusion criteria required a confirmed diagnosis of unilateral SSNHL using standard pure-tone audiometry. Associated symptoms, such as new-onset dizziness and tinnitus in the affected ear, were recorded at the time of the initial audiometric evaluation. Information regarding treatment approaches and intensity was collected by ch

Hearing results with combination steroid therapy for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss was described by Mc. Cabe in 1979 and, since then, many authors have tried to define, explain and correctly treat this disease. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders defines it as sudden sensorineural hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three contiguous audiometric frequencies in a period of 72 hours. Among the therapeutic strategies, corticosteroids have been shown to have the greatest benefit due to their anti-inflammatory and anti-cellular stress effects. OBJECTIVE: To determine the hearing results with combined ste
