Deciphering the gene expression profile of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway in the left atria of patients with mitral regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Differentially expressed genes in the left atria of mitral regurgitation (MR) pigs have been linked to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway in the KEGG pathway. However, specific genes of the PPAR signaling pathway in the left atria of MR patients have never been explored. METHODS: This study enrolled 15 MR patients with heart failure, 7 patients with aortic valve disease and heart failure, and 6 normal controls. We used PCR assay (84 genes) for PPAR pathway and quantitative RT-PCR to study specific genes of the PPAR pathway in the left atria. RESUL

Recipient-to-donor atrioatrial conduction after orthotopic heart transplantation: surface electrocardiographic features and estimated prevalence.

Recipient-to-donor atrioatrial conduction across a suture line has been rarely reported after orthotopic heart transplantation. The relation of such conduction to symptomatic arrhythmias and its prevalence are not known. Recipient-to-donor atrioatrial conduction was demonstrated in a 28-year-old woman with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia 7 years after orthotopic heart transplantation. Atrial tachycardia in the recipient atria conducted 2:1 to the donor atria and was eliminated by radiofrequency catheter ablation of a left-sided atrioatrial electrical connection. The electrocardiogram a

Spinal Afferent Innervation From Left Dorsal Root Ganglia in the Flat-Mounts of Whole Atria of Rats: Anterograde Tracing.

The spinal afferent innervation of the heart helps to regulate cardiac functions by sending sensory information through the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) to the brain. However, the distribution and morphology of spinal afferents in the heart are not well characterized due to tracer selections, the surgical access to upper thoracic DRGs, and the thickness of the heart tissues. In this study, we injected tracer dextran biotin (DB) into the left DRGs (C8-T3) of male Sprague-Dawley rats (3-5 months). After 16 days, flat-mounts of the whole left and right atria were prepared and diaminobenzidine staine

[Segmental anatomic diagnosis in congenital cardiac anomalies. II: Sequential localization of the cardiac chambers (author's transl)].

The approach to the diagnosis of congenital heart disease, based upon the identification of the cardiac chambers, the reconstruction of their sequence and final recognition of the basic circulatory model is discussed. Three cardiac segments are recognizable embriologically, anatomically and functionally: atria, ventricles and great arteries. Connexion is the sequential link of these segments, independently from their spatial relationship. Situs of the atria can be: solitus, inversus or ambiguus, and is determined by the thoracic situs which can be assumed from the bronchial anatomy. Atrio-vent

An examination of autonomic nervous function in genetically diabetic mice.

1 This study was designed to determine whether the autonomic innervation of the heart and vas deferens in genetically diabetic mice exhibited dysfunction similar to those seen in chemically diabetic animals and diabetic patients. 2 Diabetic mutant mice (outcrossed from the C57 BL/KS db/db strain) were compared with their non-diabetic litter-mates at age 20 to 22 weeks. Right and left atria and vasa deferentia were removed from freshly killed animals and subjected to nerve stimulation and treatment with noradrenaline (NA) or acetylcholine (ACh) in organ baths. 3 Right atria from diabetic animal

Corticosteroid involvement in the changes in noradrenergic responsiveness of tissues from rats made hypertensive by short-term isolation.

1 The responses to noradrenaline and to noradrenergic nerve stimulation of spontaneously beating right atria, electrically driven left atria and vasa deferentia taken from rats made hypertensive by short-term isolation have been compared with the responses of tissues from normotensive, group-housed animals.2 Adrenocortical activity of isolated animals was assessed by plasma corticosterone determinations and measurement of adrenal weights.3 The hearts of the isolated animals were weighed and the myocardial contents of water, sodium, potassium and calcium were measured.4 Spontaneously beating ri

Pacemaker update 1984. Part II. The pacemaker syndrome.

When ventricular pacemakers are implanted in patients who still retain normal AV conduction, retrograde conduction may activate the atria after ventricular activation. This results in a retrograde flow of blood from the ventricles to the atria with flooding of the jugular and pulmonary veins. Weakness or syncope can then occur as a result of lower cardiac output or congestive heart failure. A change to a dual-chamber pacemaker that produces AV synchrony is often necessary.

A new risk scheme to predict ischemic stroke and other thromboembolism in atrial fibrillation: the ATRIA study stroke risk score.

BACKGROUND: More accurate and reliable stroke risk prediction tools are needed to optimize anticoagulation decision making in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We developed a new AF stroke prediction model using the original Anticoagulation and Risk Factors in Atrial Fibrillation (ATRIA) AF cohort and externally validated the score in a separate, contemporary, community-based inception AF cohort, ATRIA-Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN) cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: The derivation ATRIA cohort consisted of 10 927 patients with nonvalvular AF contributing 32 609 person-years off warfa

Modulation of cardiac A1-adenosine receptors in rats following treatment with agents affecting heart rate.

Effects of chronic treatment affecting heart rate on A1 adenosine receptor levels and their functions were studied. Treatment of rats with isoproterenol for 10 days accelerated heart rate and increased the level of adenosine receptors, in both the atria and ventricles. Negative dromotropic response of isolated heart to adenosine was enhanced in isoproterenol-treated rats. Similar results were obtained following treatment with atropine sulfate, or swimming training but not after treatment with thyroxine. On the other hand, treatment with amiodarone, which normally causes a decrease in heart rat

Circulating antibodies against neonatal cardiac muscarinic acetylcholine receptor in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Isolated congenital heart block may be associated with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome. In this work we demonstrated that IgG present in the sera of patients with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome (PSS) could bind and activate muscarinic acetylcholine receptors of rat neonatal atria. These antibodies were able to inhibit in a irreversible manner the binding of 3H-QNB to muscarinic cholinergic receptors of purified rat atria membranes. Moreover, IgG from PSS individuals could modify biological effects mediated by muscarinic cholinoceptors activation, i.e. decrease contractility and cAMP and increase phosph

[Left juxtaposition of the atria. Apropos of a case with dextroversion, transposition of great vessels, bilateral conus, interventricular communication and pulmonary atresia].

Report of one case of a woman aged 29 years with a severe cyanotic congenital heart disease complicated by brain abscess. The diagnosis of left juxtaposition of the atria combined with dextroversion, a d-transposition of the large vessels and a vestricular septal defect was done pre-operatively. An attempt at a Rastelli's operation was followed by immediate death. The post-mortem examination confirmed the pre-operative diagnosis and demonstrated besides a double conus and a pulmonary atresia. The juxtaposition of the atria was underlined.

Cholinergic supersensitivity and decreased number of muscarinic receptors in atria from short-term diabetic rats.

Autonomic neuropathy is a major complication of chronic diabetes and is responsible for disturbances in the cardiovascular system and other organs. Early cardiac disturbances have been attributed to defective vagal control of the heart. The heart rates of rats with chemically-induced diabetes are depressed and an increase in blood pressure produces a greater reflex bradycardia in diabetic rats. Tomlinson and Yusof found that isolated, stimulated left atria from rats made diabetic with alloxan are supersensitive to the negative inotropic influence of acetylcholine. On the other hand, Rao, et al

[Successful Atrial Plication in Improving Respiratory Failure due to Bilateral Giant Atria].

Giant atria may trigger respiratory failure, which often requires surgical intervention. We report a patient who presented with respiratory failure due to bilateral giant atria. The patient was a 75-year-old woman with rheumatic heart disease. She had undergone mitral valve replacement and tricuspid annuloplasty at another hospital 17 years ago but recently developed respiratory dysfunction. Compression to the lungs by enlarged atria was diagnosed as the main cause of respiratory dysfunction. Hence, the anterior-to-posterior left atrial wall was plicated by para-annular and superior-half plica

Chronic intermittent hypoxia remodels catecholaminergic nerve innervation in mouse atria.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH, a model for sleep apnoea) is a major risk factor for several cardiovascular diseases. Autonomic imbalance (sympathetic overactivity and parasympathetic withdrawal) has emerged as a causal contributor of CIH-induced cardiovascular disease. Previously, we showed that CIH remodels the parasympathetic pathway. However, whether CIH induces remodelling of the cardiac sympathetic innervation remains unknown. Mice (male, C57BL/6J, 2-3 months) were exposed to either room air (RA, 21% O2 ) or CIH (alternating 21% and 5.7% O2 , every 6 min, 10 h day-1 ) for 8-10 weeks.

The histopathological substratum for atrial fibrillation in man.

Quantitative studies on the histological sections of the atria including sinoatrial (SA) node, SA junction and internodal preferential pathways in 12 hearts with long-term atrial fibrillation (Af group) and in 43 hearts with no arrhythmia (control group) have been carried out. The control group was subdivided into two age-groups, the younger and older over 50 years for the age-matched comparison with the Af group. In the Af group, markedly impaired contiguity of the SA junction, severe fibrosis and lipomatosis of atria were common precipitating factors. Regarding the ratio of SA nodal cells to

Abnormal cardiovascular and electrocardiographic profiles and cardiac glycogen content in rabbits injected with scorpion venom.

Cardiovascular and ECG abnormalities were studied following injection of venom of Buthus tamulus, a common scorpion found in South India. Venom was administered in doses of 2 and 4 mg/kg body weight. Subsequent estimation of glycogen content of different chambers of the heart, showed a significant reduction in tissue glycogen levels in both atria and ventricles in animals treated with a venom dose of 2 mg/kg. However, a significant reduction occurred only in atria with a higher venom dose of 4 mg/kg.

Lack of connection between the atria and the peripheral conduction system in a case of corrected transposition with congenital atrioventricular block.

This is the first documented histologic study of the heart of a patient with corrected transposition of the great vessels and congenital atrioventricular (A-V) block with no connection between the atria and an anterior type of peripheral conduction system. Musculature in the superior (anterior) walls of both atria was absent, as was the anterior A-V node. The peripheral conduction system began with the bundle of His. In place of the absent atrial musculature, fibrosis and calcification were present. The relation of laboratory evidence of connective tissue dyscrasia in the mother to the congeni

Myocardial infarction induces atrial inflammation that can be prevented by C1-esterase inhibitor.

AIMS: Inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI). Whether MI induces atrial inflammation is unknown however. Here, we analysed atrial inflammation in patients with MI and in rats with experimentally induced MI. The effect of the anti-inflammatory agent C1-esterase inhibitor (C1inh) on atrial inflammation in rats was also analysed. METHODS: In the hearts of patients who died at different time points after MI (total n=24, mean age=60), neutrophils (myeloperoxidase-positive cells), lymphocytes (CD45-positive cells) and macrophages (CD68-positive cells)
