Stabilization period before capturing an ultra-short vagal index can be shortened to 60 s in endurance athletes and to 90 s in university students.

PURPOSE: To find the shortest, acceptable stabilization period before recording resting, supine ultra-short-term Ln RMSSD and heart rate (HR). METHOD: Thirty endurance-trained male athletes (age 24.1 ± 2.3 years, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) 64.1 ± 6.6 ml·kg-1·min-1) and 30 male students (age 23.3 ± 1.8 years, VO2max 52.8 ± 5.1 ml·kg-1·min-1) were recruited. Upon awaking at home, resting, supine RR intervals were measured continuously for 10 min using a Polar V800 HR monitor. Ultra-short-term Ln RMSSD and HR values were calculated from 1-min RR interval segments after stabilization per

The beat of social cognition: Exploring the role of heart rate variability as marker of mentalizing abilities.

There is a long-standing debate on the influence of physiological signals on social behavior. Recent studies suggested that heart rate variability (HRV) may be a marker of social cognitive processes. However, this evidence is preliminary and limited to laboratory studies. In this study, 25 participants were assessed with a social cognition battery and asked to wear a wearable device measuring HRV for 6 consecutive days. The results showed that reduced HRV correlated with higher hostility attribution bias. However, no relationship was found between HRV and other social cognitive measures includ

Ask the doctor. When doctors interpret a blood pressure reading, should they also consider the heart rate? I am a 78-year-old man and have had high blood pressure (under control) for more than 40 years. I frequently monitor my blood pressure at home, resting for five minutes before I take the reading. My blood pressure is often higher when my heart rate is close to its usual resting rate (about 50 beats per minute) and lower when my heart heart is beating faster than that. Can the body's demands that cause higher blood pressure be partially satisfied by a faster heart rate?

Does a polar chest strap pair with an Apple Watch more accurately than an Apple Watch alone on low, moderate, and high exercise intensities? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The Apple Watch measures heart rate, but its validity decreases with high exercise intensities, so this study investigated whether pairing the Apple Watch with a polar chest strap could be more accurate than the Apple Watch alone in measuring heart rate during high intensity exercises and in recovery from exercises. METHODS: A cross-sectional study measured heart rate on the Apple Watch compared to the Apple Watch paired with the Polar chest strap on 30 healthy subjects. Each participant has done three minutes of low, moderate, and high exercise intensities using both the treadmil

The Conconi test: methodology after 12 years of application.

The protocol for the determination of the speed/heart rate relationship during incremental exercise previously described (so-called Conconi test) has been refined and in part modified during 12 years of application. The new protocol calls for time-based increments in exercise intensity that are uniform up to submaximal speeds and progressively greater in the final phase. As in the original article (18), the speed/heart rate relationship is linear at low to moderate speed and curvilinear from submaximal to maximal speeds. A method is presented for the mathematical definition of this relationshi

[Effects of theophylline and doxofylline on airway responsiveness in beagles].

We examined the effects of doxofylline, which is a new methylxanthine analog, on heart rate, respiratory rate, respiratory resistance and airway responsiveness in five beagles, and compared with those effects of theophylline. Airway responsiveness to inhaled methacholine was determined by modified Astograph (7Hz oscillation method). Theophylline (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg) was orally administered one hour prior to the determination of airway responsiveness and doxofylline (20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg, 80 mg/kg) was orally administered thirty minutes prior to determination of airway responsiveness at

The clinical significance of electronic fetal heart rate monitoring in twins.

OBJECTIVES: Fully effective intrapartum cardiotocographic (CTG) fetal heart monitoring is still missing. Visual analysis is far from credibility. Additional, computerized analysis techniques were proposed however they did not substantially decrease possible risks of fetal asphyxia. In twin pregnancies the problem is even more complicated. Our goal is to find the most valuable parameters in intrapartum CTG surveillance in twins, based on actual FIGO criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study included 58 women in labor who had been admitted to Delivery Department of tertiary care hospital with twin

Regional differences in office and self-measured home heart rates in Asian hypertensive patients: AsiaBP@Home study.

Increased heart rate is a predictor of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. In those with high heart rates, interventions for heart rate reduction have been associated with reductions in coronary events. Asia is a diverse continent, and the prevalences of hypertension and cardiovascular disease differ among its countries. The present analysis of AsiaBP@Home study data investigated differences among resting heart rates (RHRs) in 1443 hypertensive patients from three Asian regions: East Asia (N = 595), Southeast Asia (N = 680), and South Asia (N = 168). This is the fir

Non-Invasive, Continuous, Pulse Pressure Monitoring Method.

Many individuals suffer from ailments such hypertension that require frequent health monitoring. Unfortunately, current technology does not possess the ability for unobtrusive, continuous monitoring. This paper proposes estimation of pulse pressure based on pulse transient time determined from one non-contact, and one contact sensor: Doppler radar for non-contact detection of heart beat, and piezoelectric finger pulse sensor. The time delay between heart beat and finger pulse was determined using MATLAB software, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) was calculated. Finally, subjects' pulse pressure e

Application of Heart Rate Variability in Diagnosis and Prognosis of Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The use of heart rate variability as a tool capable of discriminating individuals with diabetes mellitus is still little explored, as its use has been limited to comparing those with and without the disease. Thus, the purpose of this study was to verify the use of heart rate variability as a tool for diagnostic and prognostic evaluation in person with diabetes and to identify whether there are cutoff points generated from the use of this tool in these individuals. METHODS: A search was conducted in the electronic databases MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EMBASE, and LIL

How many sphygmomanometric cuff inflations are necessary to obtain a hemodynamic baseline?

The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum number of consecutive blood pressure cuff inflations required to obtain seated stable resting baseline measurements of heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Sixty male college students aged 18 to 31 years volunteered as study subjects. Thirteen observations of HR, SBP, DBP, and MAP were recorded at 90-second intervals for each subject using a Critikon-Dinamap monitor. Stable readings for SBP and MAP were obtained in 6.5 minutes or 3 to 5 cuff inflations in the popu

Heart rate variability in normal tension glaucoma: A case-control study.

Primary vascular dysregulation (PVD) is believed to be a main cause of local vasospasm and impaired autoregulation as a possible contributing factor in the pathogenesis of normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Subjects with PVD respond stronger to psychological stress. Autonomic dysfunction is another reason of instable ocular blood flow and may be studied by means of assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) especially during a hand-cold provocation test (CPT).To compare the shift of HRV parameters in NTG and healthy subjects after a cold provocation test and to assess the relation between structur

Physiologic heart rate dependency of the PQ interval and its sex differences.

On standard electrocardiogram (ECG) PQ interval is known to be moderately heart rate dependent, but no physiologic details of this dependency have been established. At the same time, PQ dynamics is a clear candidate for non-invasive assessment of atrial abnormalities including the risk of atrial fibrillation. We studied PQ heart rate dependency in 599 healthy subjects (aged 33.5 ± 9.3 years, 288 females) in whom drug-free day-time 12-lead ECG Holters were available. Of these, 752,517 ECG samples were selected (1256 ± 244 per subject) to measure PQ and QT intervals and P wave durations. For eac

Blood pressure and heart rate recordings at home and at the clinic. Evidence for increased cardiovascular reactivity in young men with mild blood pressure elevation.

In 41 apparently healthy men, aged 22-25 years, with mild blood pressure elevation (MBPE) and 19 age- and sex-matched normotensive controls (MC), blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) readings at the clinic were compared to self-determined morning and afternoon values at home. The criteria for inclusion in the MBPE group were auscultatory BP less than 150 mmHg systolic and/or less than 90 mmHg diastolic at the military enlistment center from which the subjects were recruited, and systolic BP less than 140 mmHg on two subsequent occasions at the clinic. The BPs of the controls, who were mainl

The Microsoft Research Aurora Project: Important Findings on Cuffless Blood Pressure Measurement.

Conventional blood pressure (BP) measurement devices based on an inflatable cuff only provide a narrow view of the continuous BP profile. Cuffless BP measuring technologies could permit numerous BP readings throughout daily life and thereby considerably improve the assessment and management of hypertension. Several wearable cuffless BP devices based on pulse wave analysis (applied to a photoplethysmography or tonometry waveform) with or without use of pulse arrival time are now available on the market. The key question is: Can these devices provide accurate measurement of BP? Microsoft Researc

Validity and usefulness of non-invasive ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

In the past few years non-invasive blood pressure monitoring has become increasingly popular in the belief that this approach: can provide accurate mean blood pressure values over a 24-h period or through the day and these values may define better than the casual values the severity of hypertension and its related risk of developing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In this paper a number of problems concerning non-invasive ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in hypertension will be reviewed. First, evidence will be shown that blood pressure measurements at intervals up to 30 min can pr

Reliability of resting heart rate measurements in atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate (HR) control in atrial fibrillation (AF) is commonly guided by resting HR measurements, usually with 12‑lead ECG or in-office pulse palpation. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the reliability of resting HR measurements in AF patients with long-term ambulatory ECG and activity monitoring. METHODS: We included patients who had recorded a full-disclosure ambulatory ECG with a mobile cardiac telemetry device equipped with an accelerometer (PocketECG, MEDICALgorithmics, Poland), with at least 95% AF. Resting HR samples (≤20 per individual/day) were collected as 10-s daytime (

Acute and training effects of resistance exercise on heart rate variability.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used as a non-invasive method to evaluate heart rate (HR) regulation by the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. In this review, we discuss the effect of resistance exercise both acutely and after training on HRV in healthy individuals and in those with diseases characterized by autonomic dysfunction, such as hypertension and fibromyalgia. HR recovery after exercise is influenced by parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic recovery to resting levels. Therefore, examination of HRV in response to acute exercise yield
