BACKGROUND: The characteristic endoscopic findings of non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) gastritis, including white marbled appearance and crack-like mucosa, have been reported. However, these findings can also manifest in H. pylori (HP)-infected gastritis. This study compared NHPH gastritis and mild atrophic HP gastritis to identify features that may enhance NHPH diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2087 patients underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and were histologically evaluated by multiple gastric mucosal biopsies according to the updated Sydney System (USS) at Sh

Helicobacter species affect humans and animals, mainly causing gastrointestinal but also extra-gastrointestinal pathologies. Besides Helicobacter pylori, which is the main human pathogen, Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) are also associated with human diseases, thus raising concern about their zoonotic potential. Veterinarians are considered a risk group for NHPH infections and act as first-line communicators to animal owners about their prophylaxis. Therefore, we aimed to assess the knowledge and perception of veterinarians working in Greece about Helicobacter pylori and NHPH by a

Marginal zone lymphomas rank as the third most prevalent form of non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma, trailing behind diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (GML) is a low-grade B-cell neoplasia frequently correlated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-induced chronic gastritis. On the other hand, a specific subset of individuals diagnosed with GML does not exhibit H. pylori infection. In contrast to its H. pylori-positive counterpart, it was previously believed that H. pylori-negative GML was less likely to respond to antimicrobial t

BACKGROUND: Eradication therapy is known to be effective against Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric MALT lymphoma but predicting the efficacy of eradication therapy against Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma is difficult. Recent reports have shown that non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections induce gastric MALT lymphoma, and we aimed to clarify whether non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections are associated with the efficacy of eradication therapy.
METHODS: We analyzed eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for 182 cases of gastric MALT lymphoma, classi

Eradicating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can cause an imbalance in the microbiota. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome may produce multiple diseases and bacterial infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and its eradication on the composition of the oral tongue coating microbiota. A cohort of 35 participants was recruited and categorized into two groups: the H. pylori negative group (N group) consisting of 12 individuals and the H. pylori positive group (23 individuals). Within the H. pylori positive group, subjects we

Helicobacter pylori is a recently recognized human pathogen causing chronic-active gastritis in association with duodenal ulcers and gastric cancer. Helicobacter mustelae is a closely related bacterium with similar biochemical and morphologic characteristics. H. mustelae infection of antral and fundic mucosa in adult ferrets causes chronic gastritis. An essential virulence property of both Helicobacter species is bacterial adhesion to mucosal surfaces. The aim of this study was to determine whether H. mustelae binds to the same lipids shown previously to be receptors for H. pylori adhesion in

Gastric Helicobacter pylori (H. pylon) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer (DU), although not all H. pylori infected persons will develop disease. Duodenal H. pylori was supposed to be one of the factors related with DU. The aim of this study was to investigate whether H. pylori in the duodenum of patients with DU plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of DU regarding the gastric H. pylori status. Furthermore, it was to determine the prevalence of duodenal H. pylori infection in Thailand. Ninety three patients were included in the study. They underwent gastroscopic

The stomach contents contain of both acid and proteolytic enzymes. How the stomach digests food without damaging itself remained a topic of investigation for decades. One candidate was gastric urease, which neutralized acid by producing ammonia from urea diffusing from the blood and potentially could protect the stomach. Discovery that gastric urease was not mammalian resulted in a research hiatus until discovery that gastric urease was produce by Helicobacter pylori which caused gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Gastric urease allows the organism to colonize the acidic stomach and s

BACKGROUND Cholecystitis is a common surgical condition. Recently, several authors have reported that DNA of bile tolerant Helicobacter spp. has been found in the human bile colonizing the biliary tract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the presence of Helicobacter spp. and gallstone cholecystitis. METHODS In this case-control study, gallstones, bile, and gallbladder mucosa were collected from 25 patients without gallstone disease, 24 with acute cholecystitis, and 28 with chronic cholecystitis. The presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), Helicobacter bilis (H.

Helicobacter (H.) suis can colonize the stomach of pigs as well as humans, causing chronic gastritis and other gastric pathological changes including gastric ulceration and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Recently, a virulence factor of H. suis, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), has been demonstrated to play an important role in the induction of human gastric epithelial cell death and modulation of lymphocyte proliferation depending on glutamine and glutathione catabolism. In the present study, the relevance of GGT in the pathogenesis of H. suis infection was studied in mouse

UNLABELLED: POTENTIAL PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF H. PYLORI: Epidemiological studies have not demonstrated an association between H. pylori infection and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, reflux esophagitis, or Barrett's esophagus with or without dysplasia or esophageal adenocarcinoma. On the contrary, an apparently favorable negative association has been identified suggested a potential protective effect of H. pylori. An inverse association is also observed between the severity of reflux complications and infection by strains of H. pylori expressing certain virulence markers (cogA) associated wit

Helicobacter pylori colonises the stomach of man and induces a strong mucosal inflammation and a local and systemic immune response. Differences in virulence characteristics of Helicobacter pylori isolates can account for different clinical outcomes of infection. Most determinants of Helicobacter pylori pathogenicity factors are present in all isolates examined; some are present only in or expressed more intensively by certain strains. Many enzymes, i.e., urease, mucinase, phospholipases, alcohol dehydrogenase, neuraminidase, etc. could promote tissue erosion and ulceration by destroying the i

Organisms whose cells were large, tight spirals were isolated from gastric biopsies of dogs. Touch cytology samples from all of the dogs contained large spiral organisms. Characteristics of 10 strains are described. These organisms were 5 to 10 microns long by 0.3 microns wide, and each cell had 10 to 20 sheathed flagella at both ends of the cell. The cells did not have periplasmic fibrils. These organisms were microaerophilic and grew at 37 and 42 degrees C but not at 25 degrees C on brain heart infusion agar containing blood. They did not grow on brucella blood agar. They were catalase and o

Half of the world's population is persistently infected with Helicobacter pylori. The chronicity of this infection ultimately elicits clinical manifestations ranging from gastritis and peptic ulcers to adenocarcinoma and MALT lymphoma. Laboratory research following the initial observations of Helicobacter species was greatly hindered by an inability to isolate and culture the bacteria. Thus, the ability to culture bacterial species from this genus is an extremely important step in expanding clinical knowledge and development of therapies. This chapter describes successful techniques for cultur

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) causes chronic gastritis in human stomach, a minority of which progress to peptic ulcer disease, atrophic gastritis, or gastric malignancies. Clinical outcomes of H. pylori infection has been shown to depend on the variability of H. pylori virulence factors, host susceptibility, environmental factors and their interactions. This review provides an update on the molecular pathogenesis of H. pylori infection, focused on H. pylori virulence factors, H. pylori-gastric epithelium interactions, and modulation of host cell signaling. Understanding of H. pylori molecula

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori colonize the stomach in approximately half of the world's population. Infection with this bacterium is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, adenocarcinoma, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Besides being a pathogen with worldwide prevalence, H. pylori show increasingly high antibiotic resistance rates, making the development of new therapeutic strategies against this bacterium challenging. Furthermore, H. pylori is a genetically diverse bacterium, which may be influenced by the presence of mobile genomic elements, including prophages.
