The spectrum of human non-pylori Helicobacter infections is expanding. Evidence for the presence of bacteria such as H. heilmannii, H. felis, H. rappini, H. cinaedi, H. fennelliae and H. pullorum has been reported. These bacteria are likely to be associated with different clinical disorders. H. heilmannii is the most commonly described non-pylori Helicobacter in humans. Colonization with this bacterium is usually associated with mild gastritis. In some cases, gastric ulcer disease may occur. H. heilmannii are classified as such on the basis of morphological criteria. Recent phenotypical and ge

INTRODUCTION: During the course of research into Helicobacter pylori, further microorganisms colonizing the gastric mucosa have been detected. The large spiral-shaped bacteria deviating from Helicobacter pylori was originally described by Dent. The bacteria was initially named Gastrospirillum hominis, but after sequencing of 16S rRNA it was classified as Helicobacter and named Helicobacter Heilmannii in honour of the pathologist Prof. Dr. Konrad Heilmann. We report two additional cases.
CASE REPORTS: In 1997 at the Department of Pathology of General Hospital in Senta 268 gastric biopsies (151

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is the primary cause of gastritis and peptic ulceration in humans. In a minority of patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, long tightly coiled spiral bacteria, provisionally named "Helicobacter heilmannii," are observed in gastric biopsies. These bacteria are extremely fastidious and only one previous study has succeeded in obtaining an isolate in vitro.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used two different selective media to isolate "H. heilmannii" from the gastric mucosa of a Finnish patient presenting with severe dyspeptic symptoms. The isolates were characte

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether 2 isolates of recently isolated swine-origin Helicobacter pylori-like bacteria are pathogenic in pigs and compare the signs of gastric disease induced by these isolates with those detected in H pylori- and Helicobacter heilmannii-infected pigs.
ANIMALS: 36 neonatal gnotobiotic pigs.
PROCEDURE: Groups of separately housed pigs were inoculated orally with swine-origin Helicobacter-like isolates 2662 or 1268, H pylori (human gastric pathogen), or a gastric homogenate from gnotobiotic swine containing H heilmannii. Noninoculated pigs were used as control animals.

BACKGROUND: "Candidatus Helicobacter heilmannii" induce chronic gastritis, which eventually leads to gastric B-cell type mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. This study was performed using an animal model of infection with "Candidatus Helicobacter heilmannii" to elucidate how this chronic inflammation is induced or maintained.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BALB/c mice were infected with the "Candidatus Helicobacter heilmannii" isolate SH4. The animals were examined at 8, 26, 54, and 83 weeks after the infection. The stomach of the animals was resected and immunostained for peripheral l

Chronic gastritis causes significant morbidity and mortality in captive cheetahs but is rare in wild cheetahs despite colonization by abundant spiral bacteria. This research aimed to identify the Helicobacter species that were associated with gastritis in captive cheetahs but are apparently commensal in wild cheetahs. Helicobacter species were characterized by PCR amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA, urease, and cagA genes and by transmission electron microscopy of frozen or formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded gastric samples from 33 cheetahs infected with Helicobacter organisms (10 wild

Epidemiological and pathological studies on Helicobacter spp. in feline stomachs in Japan were conducted using genus- and species-specific (H. felis, H. bizzozeronii, H. heilmannii sensu stricto [s.s.] and H. pylori) polymerase chain reactions (PCRs), ureAB gene sequencing and histopathology. PCR results showed that 28 of 56 cats were infected with Helicobacter spp., and H. heilmannii s.s. was the most prevalent species by both PCR (28/28) and ureAB gene sequencing (26/28). Some of the sequences showed high similarities with those from human patients with gastric diseases (99%). There were no

The recent isolation of Helicobacter pylori from cats obtained from a commercial supplier has potentially important public health implications. The present study investigated whether H. pylori infection was common in stray cats. Twenty-five cats were examined for the presence of H. pylori by histological examination, culture and two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Histologically, the gastric biopsy specimens from all cats showed large spiral organisms typical of H. felis and not H. pylori. Samples from 23 cats yielded bacterial growth and two had no growth. Colonies grossly similar to

BACKGROUND: Infections with gastric Helicobacter spp. are associated with gastritis, peptic ulceration, and malignancies. Helicobacter pylori is the most prevalent Helicobacter species colonizing the human stomach. Other gastric non-H. pylori helicobacters (NHPHs) have been described in 0.2%-6% of human patients with gastric disorders. Nevertheless, due to difficulties in the diagnosis of NHPH infections and lack of routine screening, this is most likely an underestimation of their true prevalence. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have been performed in the presence of Helicobacter spp

Helicobacter is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that colonizes the stomach of humans and dogs, among other mammals. The most frequent species found in the gastric mucosa of man is H. pylori, however, there are other species of Helicobacter in the stomach of humans, such as H. suis, H. bizzozeronii, H. felis, H. salomonis and H. heilmannii sensu stricto, named non H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) some of which also colonize the dog's stomach. The detection of NHPH in the stomach mucosa of humans with gastric disease, and in a high percentage of dogs, suggests the possibility that these animals p

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and identify the species of gastric Helicobacter in the stool of dogs with gastritis. The study was carried out on thirty dogs of different breeds, of both genders and of various ages, diagnosed with gastritis. Helicobacter spp. was detected in stool samples using the nested-PCR method. Helicobacter bacteria were identified in stool samples from seven (23.3%) dogs. Helicobacter heilmannii was found to be the most common species of gastric Helicobacter. Helicobacter salomonis was identified much less frequently, while Helicobacter felis, Hel

The genus Helicobacter presently comprises 32 validly named species. Helicobacter equorum, Helicobacter baculiformis and Helicobacter suis were recognized as new species in 2007 and 2008. Non-pylori Helicobacter species are occasionally isolated from human clinical specimens, though their natural hosts are mammals other than human and birds. It remains unclear whether they are associated with human diseases. 'Helicobacter heilmannii' causes human chronic gastritis. Several reports suggest that Helicobacter hepaticus and Helicobacter bilis are associated with human hepatic and biliary disorders

Human infection by Non-Helicobacter pylori-Helicobacter is rare and most commonly transmitted through direct contact with animals. The clinical presentation in most cases is chronic epigastric abdominal pain and it usually leads to chronic gastritis. We present an uncommon case of a patient with acute onset abdominal pain secondary to acute peptic ulcer disease caused by Helicobacter heilmannii who underwent successful treatment. We also conducted a review of the literature to understand the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, and the best diagnostic and treatment modalities for Non

BACKGROUND: Non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacters (NHPHs) besides H. pylori infect human stomachs and cause chronic gastritis and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Cholesteryl-α-glucosides have been identified as unique glycolipids present in H. pylori and some Helicobacter species. Cholesterol-α-glucosyltransferase (αCgT), a key enzyme for the biosynthesis of cholesteryl-α-glucosides, plays crucial roles in the pathogenicity of H. pylori. Therefore, it is important to examine αCgTs of NHPHs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six gastric NHPHs were isolated from Japanese patients and maintaine

Helicobacter felis, Helicobacter bizzozeronii, and Helicobacter salomonis are frequently found in the gastric mucous membrane of dogs and cats. These large spiral organisms are phylogenetically highly related to each other. Their fastidious nature makes it difficult to cultivate them in vitro, hampering traditional identification methods. We describe here a multiplex PCR test based on the tRNA intergenic spacers and on the urease gene, combined with capillary electrophoresis, that allows discrimination of these three species. In combination with previously described 16S ribosomal DNA-based pri

The principal aims of this study were to evaluate the humoral immune response (IgG) of cats with gastric Helicobacter spp. infection, and to determine the prevalence of different types of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of cats. The Helicobacter infection status of 45 cats (12 healthy spay/neuter cats, 9 sick cats, 24 colony cats) was determined by evaluating endoscopic gastric biopsies for urease activity, presence of Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) on histopathology, and genus and species-specific PCR. Serum samples were evaluated with a kinetic enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

Helicobacter pylori infects half of the world population, being associated with several gastric disorders, such as chronic gastritis and gastric carcinoma. The Helicobacter genus also includes other gastric helicobacters, such as H. heilmannii¸ H. ailurogastricus, H. suis, H. felis, H. bizzozeronii, and H. salomonis. These gastric helicobacters colonize both the human and animal stomach. The prevalence of gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species in humans has been described as low, and the in vitro binding to the human gastric mucosa was never assessed. Herein, human gastric

Helicobacter pylori is a well-established cause of gastritis and gastric malignancy, but other Helicobacter species-collectively termed non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH)-also contribute to gastric disease. This study retrospectively analysed the prevalence of NHPH in 1115 routine gastric biopsies from a large academic medical centre submitted for H. pylori drug susceptibility genotyping using a next-generation sequencing (NGS) assay targeting 16S and 23S rRNA genes. NGS results of identified pathogens were compared against those identified on histology. NHPH species were detected in
