Who Steps in and for Whom? The Impact of Bystander Relationship and Victim Gender on the Likelihood of Helping Behavior During Sexual Harassment.

Bystanders are most frequently present prior to a sexual assault, wherein it is possible that bystanders witness sexual harassment (e.g. sexist jokes, unwanted touching). The relationship between the victim and the sex of the victim can impact bystander intervention during sexual violence. As such, the present study examines how the presence of certain types of bystanders (e.g. friends) during sexual harassment influences the likelihood of bystander intervention, and whether the gender of the victim moderates this relationship. Participants included 724 college students (78.9% female; 82.9% Wh

The RFP-C Triangle of Conflict: Listening to Countertransference Helps Listening to Children With Disruptive Behaviors.

Countertransference is universal in the treatment of children with disruptive behaviors. Clinicians must be aware of their countertransference in order to use those feelings as therapeutically as possible. Understanding their countertransference can help clinicians understand and address the defensive aspects of disruptive behaviors that protect children from consciously experiencing painful emotions. Regulation-focused psychotherapy for children (RFP-C), the first manualized psychodynamic treatment for children with disruptive behaviors, uses the RFP-C triangle of conflict as a heuristic to h

The Impact of Family Functioning on Help-Seeking Behavior and Symptom Severity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Poor family functioning is associated with higher symptom severity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and delayed help-seeking behavior in other forms of psychopathology. However, little is known about the impact of family functioning on help-seeking behavior and symptom severity in adults with OCD. The present study investigated the association between family functioning and both treatment delay and symptom severity in adults with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants were 194 adults who self-identified as having OCD and completed an internet survey, including measures ass

The Risk of Bullying and Probability of Help-Seeking Behaviors in School Children: A Bayesian Network Analysis.

An increase in aggressive behaviors in adolescents has been observed for a few years. The participation in bullying is associated with many psychosocial difficulties in adolescent development. On the other hand, the help-seeking behavior can be one of the most important protective factors that reduce the risk for this type of violence. The study was aimed at estimating the risk factors, as well as the protective factors of school bullying, by using the Bayesian networks to build a model allowing to estimate the probability of occurrence of the aggressive and help-seeking behaviors among school

Characteristics and help-seeking behaviors of Internet gamblers based on most problematic mode of gambling.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of problem Internet gamblers have failed to distinguish whether their problem gambling relates to Internet or land-based gambling modes. Therefore, characteristics and help-seeking behaviors of people whose gambling problems relate specifically to Internet gambling are unknown, but could inform the optimal alignment of treatment and support services with the needs and preferences of problem gamblers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare (1) characteristics of problem Internet gamblers and problem land-based gamblers and (2) uptake of different types and modes of

Suicidal thoughts during early adolescence: prevalence, associated troubles and help-seeking behavior.

A total of 1600 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 living in a county bordering on Paris were interviewed concerning their health, their use of drugs, both legal and illegal, their behavior, and their seeking of health care. Fourteen percent of the boys and 23% of the girls had already thought about suicide and 5% and 10% (respectively) proclaimed having thought about it frequently. Young adolescents who thought about suicide, the girls as well as the boys, had more health problems (fatigue, nightmares, insomnia), used more drugs (including tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, psychotropic

Self-management and help-seeking behavior for gastroesophageal reflux symptoms: A population-based survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite societal guidelines recommending targeted screening for Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) in individuals with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (GERS), screening adherence is suboptimal. Current screening approaches fail to identify individuals not seeking medical consultation for GERS or whose GERS are managed with 'over-the-counter' (OTC) acid suppressant therapies. AIM: To assess patients' self-management and help-seeking behavior for GERS. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data from the Dutch general population aged 18-75 years be

Psychodermatologic Dimensions of Psoriasis: Perceived Burden, Help-Seeking Behavior and Openness to Supportive Care.

Background/Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated dermatosis with an important psychodermatologic burden, in which psychological stress, perceived disease impact, stigma, and attitudes toward mental health care may influence patient support needs. Although psychological and psychiatric interventions are increasingly discussed in dermatology, patient openness to different forms of supportive care, including music therapy, remains insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to characterize psychodermatologic burden and support-related attitudes among patients with psoriasis, with

Sex differences in help-seeking behavior for depression in Lesotho: findings from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Given the many adverse health outcomes associated with depression, it is imperative to promote help-seeking behaviors. However, in Lesotho, there are no published studies that have investigated the help-seeking dynamics for depression. As such, the following questions remain unanswered: (a) What proportion of people living with depression in Lesotho seek help? (b) Are there significant sex differences in the factors associated with help-seeking for depression? To address these questions, we examined the prevalence and sex differences in the factors associated with help-seeking for

When helpfulness backfires: LLMs and the risk of false medical information due to sycophantic behavior.

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit a vulnerability arising from being trained to be helpful: a tendency to comply with illogical requests that would generate false information, even when they have the knowledge to identify the request as illogical. This study investigated this vulnerability in the medical domain, evaluating five frontier LLMs using prompts that misrepresent equivalent drug relationships. We tested baseline sycophancy, the impact of prompts allowing rejection and emphasizing factual recall, and the effects of fine-tuning on a dataset of illogical requests, including out-of-di

The Help-Seeking Behavior of Victims of Image-Based Sexual Harassment and Abuse: A Scoping Review.

Image-based sexual harassment and abuse (IBSHA) has recently gained scientific attention. To date, research has primarily focused on victim characteristics and impact, while little specific empirical research exists on victims' help-seeking behavior, including barriers and facilitators to seeking support. The aim of this scoping review was to examine the current state of literature on IBSHA victims' help-seeking behavior and barriers and facilitators to seeking support. Seven electronic bibliographic databases were searched up to June 2023 to identify relevant literature. Inclusion criteria co
