Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.

Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma is an uncommon, benign vascular tumor manifesting as an orange-red mass in the posterior pole of the eye. Serous retinal detachment accounts for decreased vision in most patients. Diagnosis of this tumor is challenging with many patients initially misdiagnosed with choroidal melanoma or metastasis. Several ancillary tests such as ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, and magnetic resonance imaging help differentiate this tumor from other simulating lesions. Asymptomatic lesions should be observed, but visually threatening or

Intercostal arteriovenous hemangioma.

We report a case of a 46-year-old man who presented with a chest wall tumor in the right hemithorax. He underwent thoracotomy to remove the mass, which was found to be an arteriovenous hemangioma arising from the intercostal muscle. Arteriovenous hemangioma is a rare tumor and chest wall is an extremely rare site for this tumor. This tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the chest wall tumors. Complete surgical excision offers the best treatment.

[Adult laryngeal hemangioma].

CASE DESCRIPTION: A patient aged 31 was admitted to the Ward because of hoarseness and difficulties in breathing. Family case history was negative. Personal case history shows pneumonia and jaundice. Hoarseness occurred suddenly, four months earlier, and did not change until hospitalization. The patient occasionally woke up for air loss. He first came for otolaryngological examination on November 23, 1995, and was admitted for examination and treatment. By frontal rhinoscopy, oropharingoscopic and otoscopic findings are regular. Indirect laryngoscopy shows regular findings in the hypopharynx.

Infantile subglottic hemangioma.

Infantile subglottic hemangiomas are rare congenital lesions of the larynx that are difficult to manage. Our experience with 10 cases was reviewed. All patients presented with stridor at birth, or shortly after. The minimum follow-up was 6 months, with an average of 44 months. The patients were classified and treated according to the size of the hemangioma. The treatment included expectant management, systemic steroids, CO2 laser excision, and tracheostomies. Overall, eight patients were cured, one developed subglottic stenosis, and one died due to unrelated causes. We recommend that (1) patie

[Port wine hemangioma].

Port wine stains are mainly due to an increase in the number or size of dermal capillary vessels. They are a natural disgrace which, in their most common form (i.e. isolated and non-systematized), requires a cosmetic treatment. It is for this purpose that various therapies were formerly prescribed with inconstant results. Since the development of lasers, notably the argon laser and, most recently, the pulsed dye laser, these treatments have become obsolete. Before they fall into oblivion, it must be remembered that until the seventies radiotherapy was part of the old methods and that all cases

Congenital laryngeal hemangioma.

Congenital subglottic hemangioma consistently occurs in a site below the vocal cord. It is a distinct clinical entity with typical clinical features. However, congenital hemangioma in other sites can cause airway obstruction. An anatomical classification is proposed on the basis of review of 23 consecutive cases. It is important to accurately identify the site and distribution of the lesion before commencing treatment. Radiation has been an acknowledged form of treatment, and in our hospital we have confirmed that radiation therapy, either by external beam, or by insertion of a radioactive gol

Infantile Hemangiomas.

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common benign vascular tumors of childhood. They develop during the first few weeks of life and naturally progress by proliferating over several months before they involute and resolve; this renders them inconsequential in many cases, but sometimes IHs can have detrimental consequences on function and disfigurement. Hence, systemic propranolol has become a crucial element in IH management, alongside various other medical, procedural, and surgical options that aim to promote their quicker resolution and prevent and alleviate complications.

[Placental hemangiomas].

In the following article the author describes 7 cases of hemangioma placentae observed for a period of 5 years and short characteristics of each of them are made. Quite detailed is discussed the problem about the clinical effects of this tumor-complications during pregnancy as well as to the fetus and the new-born child. Special attention is paid to the contradictory question about the hemangioma placentae and the maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein and their possible connection with the preeclampsia.

Hemangioma of the kidney.

A multifocal cavernous hemangioma was found in the renal pelvis of a young male, in whom intermittent macroscopic hematuria developed. Selective angiography was found to be normal on two occasions. By means of preoperative ureterorenoscopy a presumptive diagnosis of hemangioma was made. Nephrectomy was performed because the location of the lesion precluded partial nephrectomy.

[Retinal hemangiomas].

In the present study the clinical picture, therapy and pathogenesis of 6 retinal diseases are individually described and discussed. These are: familial tortuosity of the small retinal arteries, arteriovenous haemangioma, cavernous haemangioma, Leber's multiple retinal aneurysms, Coats' disease and von Hippel's haemangiomatosis retinae. They can all be subsumed under the broad concept of haemangioma and represent hamartias and hamartomas of the retinal vascular system.

Management of Hemangiomas.

Infantile hemangioma (IH) is the most common benign soft tissue tumor of infancy with its pathogenesis yet to be elucidated. IHs are defined as vascular tumors of infancy and the diagnosis of IH is largely based on clinical findings, most commonly the characteristic strawberry appearance. IHs follow a stereotyped life cycle of rapid growth, a plateau, and eventual involution, and most do not require treatment. If complicated, first-line medical treatment of IH is oral propranolol, currently the most commonly used and efficacious drug. Surgery remains an option but is reserved for IHs primarily

Hemangiomas and the eye.

Infantile hemangiomas are a common vascular birthmark with heterogeneous presentations and unique growth characteristics with early rapid growth and eventual self-involution. Hemangiomas that develop around the eye have the potential for inducing amblyopia by several mechanisms and may eventually result in permanent visual impairment in otherwise healthy infants. Segmental periocular hemangiomas carry the additional risk of associated structural anomalies and PHACE syndrome. In recent years, the treatment of periocular hemangiomas has been revolutionized by the serendipitous discovery of the e

Intraosseous hemangiomas.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are classified as benign tumors of vascular nature. Some authors describe them as hamartomas. They originate and expand inside bone structures. They are usually congenital, rarely of posttraumatic origin. In the Maxillo-Facial Surgery departments of the Universities of Rome "La Sapienza" and "Tor Vergata," from 1990 to 2004, 11 cases of intraosseous hemangioma have been diagnosed. In 6 cases, the neoplasm localized in the zygomatic region; in 3 cases, at the mandible level; in 1 patient, in the maxillary site; and in 1 patient, in the frontal bone. Literature review an
