In a series of related experiments to evaluate the relative toxicity of inhaled radionuclides, beagles were exposed to aerosols containing relatively soluble (chloride) or relatively insoluble (fused clay) forms of 144-Ce and 90Sr. With the solubled 144-CeCl3, significant radiation doses were delivered to the lungs, liver, and skeleton whereas, after 90-SrCl2 exposure, the radiation dose was delivered predominantly to the skeleton. In dogs exposed to 144-Ce and 90-Sr in fused clay particles, radiation doses were delivered mostly to the lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. In most dogs dying

Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is a soluble biomarker associated with DNA synthesis. This prospective study evaluated serum TK1 activity in dogs presenting with hemoabdomen and a splenic mass. An ELISA using azidothymidine as a substrate was used to evaluate TK1 activity. Sixty-two dogs with hemoabdomen and 15 normal controls were studied. Serum TK1 activity was significantly higher in dogs with hemangiosarcoma (HSA) than in normal dogs (mean ± SEM = 17.0 ± 5.0 and 2.01 ± 0.6, respectively), but not dogs with benign disease (mean ± SEM = 10.0 ± 3.3). Using a cut-off of 6.55 U/L, TK activity demonstr

The clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic, computed tomographic, surgical and histopathological findings in a Boxer dog with retroperitoneal hemangiosarcoma are described in this study. A seven-year-old, male, castrated Boxer dog was referred for evaluation of chronic hindlimb lameness. The physical examination revealed muscle atrophy and sciatic nerve deficits. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed a caudodorsal abdominal mass. Computed tomography revealed that the mass involved the left margin of the L7 vertebra, lumbosacral canal, and lumbosacral plexus. At surgery, a large retroperit

BACKGROUND: Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a common solid tumor of the spleen, heart, and skin of dogs. Renal HSA represents an uncommon anatomic variant, with little reported about its biologic behavior and clinical outcome.
HYPOTHESIS: That renal HSA is associated with longer survival than other visceral forms of HSA.
ANIMALS: 14 dogs with renal HSA.
METHODS: Medical records from 1999 to 2004 were searched for dogs with histopathologically confirmed renal HSA, and data relevant to clinical signs, treatments, and outcomes were abstracted.
RESULTS: Clinical signs were nonspecific, and the median

A cell line (ISO-HAS) has been established from tumor tissue of a human hemangiosarcoma arising on the scalp by the use of conditioned medium from a murine-phenotypic angiosarcoma cell line (ISOS-1). Cells have been cultured for more than 2 years with up to 100 passages. The cells retained endothelial-cell properties, such as a characteristic cobblestone appearance at confluency, contact-inhibited growth, active uptake of acetylated low-density lipoprotein labeled with 1,1-dioctadecyl 1,3,3,3,3-tetramethyl-indocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI-Ac-LDL) and CD31 expression. However, they were weakly

Hemangiosarcoma is an uncommon but highly aggressive malignant vascular neoplasm in horses, most often identified as a disseminated process at postmortem examination. This report describes an adult Warmblood mare presenting with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea, severe anemia, and thrombocytopenia associated with disseminated hemangiosarcoma likely originating in the transverse colon with metastasis to the liver and lungs. This case highlights gastrointestinal hemangiosarcoma as a potential differential diagnosis in horses with unexplained bicytopenia and hemorrhagic enteropathy.

BACKGROUND: Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) commonly arises in the spleen, heart, and skin, whereas primary peritoneal presentations are rare and poorly characterized. A perivesical peritoneal location without involvement of adjacent organs has not been previously well described.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the clinical presentation, diagnostic features, treatment, and outcomes of dogs with primary peritoneal perivesical HSA.
ANIMALS: This study included 16 client-owned dogs diagnosed with peritoneal perivesical HSA at 2 referral centres between 2020 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare condition in children with poor prognosis. Microscopically this neoplasm has a particular 'Kaposi-form' arrangement. Hemangiosarcoma in non-human primates is a rare finding.
METHODS: Gross and microscopic examination of a 3-year-old rhesus were performed. Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize the hepatic hemangiosarcoma.
RESULTS: The gross necropsy revealed hemoabdomen and a 4 x 3 x 3 cm mass in the liver with multiple smaller masses throughout the hepatic parenchyma. Histopathology confirmed a poorly differentiated hemangiosarcoma

Primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasia is relatively rare in most domestic animal species, except dogs and cats, being directly associated with aging. On the other hand, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mammary carcinoma and melanoma are the most common secondary tumors affecting CNS. They usually represent metastasis, and less frequently arising from nearby areas that infiltrate or compress CNS normal tissue, resulting in neurological clinical signs. This case report documents a 10-year-old female spayed Pinscher presenting with severe thoracolumbar pain and paraplegia due to a primary vert

An 8-year-old neutered male mixed-breed dog weighing 29.7 kg was presented because of peracute restlessness. Abdominal radiographs revealed mild gastric gas dilation. Thoracic radiographs demonstrated a mild caudodorsal mediastinal mass effect with moderate cranial mediastinal widening and mild accompanying pleural effusion. Pleural fluid cytology was consistent with hemorrhage (packed cell volume: 58%). Computed tomography revealed findings consistent with active pancreatitis and a noninvasive, pre-contrast hyperattenuating, non-enhancing caudodorsal mediastinal mass suggestive of an acute he

This report describes the presentation and management of an incidental primary splenic hemangiosarcoma with hemorrhagic muscle metastasis following an incisional biopsy of a temporalis mass in a dog. In the absence of clinical signs related to the primary splenic lesion, skeletal muscle metastasis of hemangiosarcoma could be misdiagnosed as isolated primary tumor, resulting in failure to provide an accurate prognosis and effective treatment of the primary tumor itself. A thorough diagnostic imaging workup in patients presenting with blood-filled subcutaneous or muscular masses is fundamental t

A 7-year-old castrated male Maltese dog was presented for increased respiratory sounds, inability to bark, dysphagia, and hyporexia. Radiographs revealed an ovoid, opaque mass in the caudal nasopharynx. An airway examination and computed tomography scan were followed by endoscopic polypoidectomy. The mass was a hemangiosarcoma, and the patient survived > 13 months.

Hemangiosarcomas (HSAs) are aggressive tumors with a high rate of metastasis. Clinical stage has been considered a negative prognostic factor for survival. The study authors hypothesized that the median survival time (MST) of dogs with metastatic (stage III) HSA treated with a vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (VAC) chemotherapy protocol would not be different than those with stage I/II HSA. Sixty-seven dogs with HSA in different anatomic locations were evaluated retrospectively. All dogs received the VAC protocol as an adjuvant to surgery (n = 50), neoadjuvant (n = 3), or as the

This report outlines the use of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) to treat a nasal tumor in a 10-year-old Welsh Corgi. The dog initially presented with persistent nasal discharge and facial deformity, which led to a diagnosis of nasal hemangiosarcoma. Although initial treatments with radiotherapy and chemotherapy provided temporary relief, the symptoms reappeared 11 months later. As a palliative measure, TACE was administered, utilizing carboplatin as the chemotherapeutic agent and gel foam as the embolic material. The procedure successfully reduced the tumor size and alleviated the dog's

INTRODUCTION: The potential role of pathogens, particularly vector-transmitted infectious agents, as a cofactor or cause of neoplasia has not been intensively investigated. We previously reported a potential link between Bartonella spp. bacteremia and splenic hemangiosarcoma (HSA) in dogs living in the United States. The purpose of this study was to: 1/ further determine the prevalence of Bartonella spp. DNA in dogs with splenic HSA from throughout the United States; 2/ assess the impact of sample preservation methods on Bartonella spp. DNA amplification using characterized tissue samples from

Cardiac hemangiosarcoma, especially primary, is infrequently reported in the horse and remains a diagnostic challenge because of vague clinical signs and difficulty to reach an antemortem diagnosis. A 17-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding was presented with a history of tongue swelling and secondary aspiration pneumonia. Initial assessment indicated dehydration, and thoracic ultrasound revealed an abnormal structure within the myocardium alongside the previously suspected aspiration pneumonia. A subsequent, complete echocardiogram identified a large, heterogeneous, ill-defined mass invadi

A retrospective study of red blood cell parameters in 53 dogs with experimental radiation-induced hemangiosarcoma showed 24 had anemia. Morphologic alterations in red blood cells in peripheral blood films from anemic dogs included signs of regeneration (anisocytosis and polychromasia), hypochromasia, red cell fragmentation and acanthocytosis. The degree and type of red cell changes varied from dog to dog and generally correlated with the principal site of tumor involvement. Blood from dogs with tumors principally involving liver had red cell regeneration, fragmentation and acanthocytosis. Bloo
