Dynamic Hip Screw with Trochanter-Stabilizing Plate Compared with Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation as a Treatment for Unstable AO/OTA 31-A2 and 31-A3 Intertrochanteric Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic hip screw (DHS) with the addition of an angular stable trochanter-stabilizing plate (TSP) has been considered the ideal treatment for the unstable intertrochanteric fracture type. However, there have been few comparisons between DHS+TSP augmentation with intramedullary (IM) nailing. The aim of this retrospectively registered study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients with the unstable type of intertrochanteric fractures treated with DHS+TSP or IM nailing (proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA)). METHODS: From June 2013 to April 2018, 358 patients with pr

The silent carrier of beta thalassemia: interaction with the typical beta thalassemic trait.

The case of a girl affected by a Colley's disease of moderate severity is reported. A brother and a sister had levels of Hb F respectively of 18% and 45%. The father showed all the hematological signs of heterozygous thalassemia. The mother, however, was normal so far as osmotic fragility, red cell morphology, and Hb A2 level are concerned. In vitro hemoglobin chains biosynthesis was performed in all the subjects. Both the parents showed an alfa/non alfa ratio typical of beta thalassemia. Therefore, the mother has to be considered a "silent" carrier of the trait. The daughters and the son have

Malaria and haemoglobin A2 levels in northern Liberia.

The influence of malaria on HbA2 levels was investigated in two groups of children aged two to nine years from the Mano tribe of northern Liberia. One group, 174 children living in a town where there is malaria control, had a parasite rate of 6.5%, only a few having palpable spleens, but 282 children living in an area of intense malaria transmission had a parasite rate of 92%. All but one child in this group had enlarged spleens. However, the difference in proportions of elevated HbA2 values within the limits for beta-thalassaemia, 8% and 10.3% respectively, was not statistically significant (

Hematological findings in 375 Sicilians with Hb S trait.

We evaluated hematological parameters in 375 Sicilian adults with Hb S trait: Hb S levels were 41.91 +/- 2.65% in males and 40.92 +/- 2.8% in females. RBC, MCV, PCV, MCH, MCHC and total hemoglobin levels were within the normal range. Only mean Hb A2 and Hb F levels were increased (Hb A2 = 2.78 +/- 0.2%; Hb F = 1.05 +/- 0.18%), although they remained inside the normal ranges when compared to healthy controls (Hb A2 = 2.48 +/- 0.19%; Hb F = 0.93 +/- 0.14%) (p less than 0.0005). We conclude that our population does not show the hematological abnormalities such as microcytosis and decreased Hb lev

Knowledge about globin genetics for precision diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies: A case Study.

More than 1,800 changes in the synthesis and structure of hemoglobin (Hb) are estimated to exist. Many of them can be identified by chromatographic and electrophoretic analyses. However, in some cases, critical interpretation, accompanied by molecular techniques and gene sequencing, is necessary for diagnosis. This case demonstrates how important is understanding the genetics of globin chains to diagnose complex cases of hemoglobinopathies through the report of a newborn with Hb C/Beta0 thalassemia and heterozygous Hb B2 co-inheritance. A sample from the proband (a 25-day-old girl) was receive

Sickle cell-beta 0-thalassaemia in Saudi Arabia.

During an extensive investigation to determine the frequency of sickle cell and thalassaemia genes in the Saudi population, 22 cases with S/beta 0-thalassaemia were identified and the haematological, biochemical and clinical findings were compared with those in patients with sickle cell anaemia. The values of mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin and packed cell volume were found to be lower while all other haematological parameters including Hb A2 were higher in the S/beta 0-thalassaemia group. No statistically significant difference in the Hb F level was found between the two groups. Bioch

Heterogeneity of sickle cell anaemia in Arabs: review of cases with various amounts of fetal haemoglobin.

A study is presented on eleven patients with homozygous sickle cell anaemia. They are non-Sheeah Arabs from the United Arab Emirates on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The proportions of fetal haemoglobin in these patients are variable, and there is a marked variation in the severity of their disease condition; these facts are not related. African sickle cell gene admixture is a likely affecting factor.

The assessment of Buerger's exercise on dorsal foot skin circulation in patients with vasculopathic diabetic foot ulcer by using wireless near-infrared spectroscope: a cohort prospective study.

The improvement of peripheral circulation is crucial for the care of vasculopathic diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to investigate the effects of Buerger's exercise on dorsal foot skin circulation with novel technique of measuring the absorption difference in wavelength of light between oxy-hemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxy-hemoglobin (HbR). Patients with vasculopathic DFU who could tolerate Buerger's exercise three times a day at home for at least 8 weeks were enrolled (group A). They were divided into two subgroups: without previous percutaneous transluminal an

Hb A1c Determination by Capillary Electrophoresis is an Efficient Method for Detecting β-Thalassemias and Hemoglobin Variants.

Glycated hemoglobin (Hb A1c) determination by multicapillary zone electrophoresis (MZE) can additionally be used to detect Hb A2, Hb F and most common hemoglobin (Hb) variants. We assessed the effectiveness of this method for detecting β-thalassemia (β-thal), δβ-thalassemia (δβ-thal) and most common Hb variants. Moreover, Hb F/Hb A2 is evaluated as an index for discriminating between β- and δβ-thal traits. The theoretical β-thalassemia major (β-TM) birth rate in our healthcare area is calculated and contrasted with real data. A MZE technique was used for Hb A1c measurements in 27,724 patients.

RIP1 Exacerbates BBB Disruption by Impairing Autophagy-Mediated A2 Astrocyte Polarization in Hypertension-Induced Cerebral Microhemorrhage in Mice.

Cerebral microhemorrhages (CMHs) contribute to cognitive decline and motor deficits. Inhibiting A1 astrocyte polarization can attenuate brain injury and promote recovery after experimental intracerebral hemorrhage. Despite RIP1 is a known mediator of neurological impairment in hemorrhage models, it is not known whether it regulates astrocytic phenotypic switching to influence CMH progression. Here, a mouse model of hypertension-induced CMHs was established by co-administration of Ang II and L-NAME. Following hypertension induction, daily neurological assessments showed progressively declining

Hemoglobin E, an oxidatively unstable mutation.

When bloods from 3,159 individuals from the United States, Iran, Ethiopia, and South Vietnam were examined for erythrocytic enzyme deficiencies with a new test utilizing the visible reduction of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol by glutathione, gross turbidity was observed in 81 samples. All were from Southeast Asia and 78 contained hemoglobin E. The precipitation rates of various hemoglogins in hemolysates incubated with dichlorophenolindophenol were: Hb EE greater than Hb AE greater than other hemoglobins (A, S, C, D, A2, F, O-Arabia, Rush). Hemoglobin E is an oxidatively unstable hemoglobin, pos

The second space experiment of protein crystallization with domestic facilities.

The second experiment of protein crystallization was performed on domestic re-entry satellite FSW-2 in 1994-07. The results are superior to the ones of the first mission in 1992: 9 of 10 different proteins were crystallized in space, and 70% of the total 48 samples yielded single crystals. Besides hen egg-white lysozyme which grew high-quality crystals on the first mission, an acidic phospholipase A2(aPLA2) from snake venom and hemoglobin from Anser Indicus produced good-quality crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analyses. The positive effect of microgravity on protein crystal growth is v

Thalassaemia of intermediate severity resulting from the interaction between alpha- and beta-thalassaemia.

A Sicilian family is described in which the alpha-thalassaemia gene is interacting in several members with beta-thalassaemia resulting in a balanced alpha/beta chain production ratio. In one patient, affected by homozygous beta-thalassaemia, the presence of alpha-thalassaemia resulted in a less severe clinical expression of the disease, less marked imbalance in the alpha/non-alpha ratio, and a lower level of HbF. Further studies of haemoglobin synthesis are needed to clarify the complex genetic picture that results from the interaction of different forms of thalassaemia.

Calcium is required for quasi-lipoxygenase activity of hemoproteins.

Bovine and guinea pig heart homogenates, porcine leukocyte homogenate, and human hemolysate were found to vigorously oxidize linoleic acid, with lipoxygenase-like activity, to its hydroperoxy, epoxy, hydroxy-epoxy, and keto compounds in the presence of calcium chloride. In the absence of calcium, the reaction was significantly reduced. Attempts to characterize this quasi-lipoxygenase activity revealed that calcium potentiated the quasi-lipoxygenase activities of hemoproteins (hemoglobin, myoglobin, myeloperoxidase, catalase, cytochrome c) and hemin at the physiological pH of 7.5.
