OBJECTIVE: To develop a standardized porcine epistaxis model and evaluate the hemostatic effects of octyl-cyanoacrylate (OCA).
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Twenty-four standardized full-thickness wounds were created on the nasal septae of 7 pigs with a 4-mm surgical punch. Wounds were randomized to no treatment or topical OCA before and after full heparinization. The rate of hemostasis, time to hemostasis, and number of applicators of OCA required to achieve complete hemostasis were determined and groups were compared with t tests and chi2 tests.

Controlling perioperative bleeding is of critical importance to minimize hemorrhaging and fatality. Patients on anticoagulant therapy such as heparin have diminished clotting potential and are at risk for hemorrhaging. Radiation-induced hemorrhagic gastritis is a relatively uncommon complication of irradiation that can be severe. However, appropriate treatment guidelines have not yet been established because of the small number of known cases. At our hospital, we encountered nine cases of radiation-induced hemorrhagic gastritis between July 2005 and July 2018. All patients initially underwent argon plasma coagulation (APC) for hemostasis. OBJECTIVE: The primary training in any surgical practice starts with tissue handling and effective hemostasis. Neurosurgical procedures start with an incision in the scalp and require summative use of mechanical hemostats and bipolar coagulation to achieve hemostasis. Though Raney clips are the most popular and effective in maintaining hemostasis, their high cost and nonreusability become deterrents for routine use in resource-stricken environments.

INTRODUCTION: Powder hemostats are valuable adjuncts to minimize intraoperative and postoperative complications. In addition to promotion of rapid coagulation, resorption, and biocompatibility are desirable attributes. Plant starch-based polysaccharide hemostat powders are effective and widely used hemostatic agents, however their source and/or processing can affect characteristics such as in vivo degradability. For example, Arista is a purified/hydrolyzed starch powder that is rapidly resorbed in vivo; whereas PerClot shows slow resorption and preservation of a crystalline form.
