We tested sera collected between 1976 and 1984 from 362 persons in a variety of epidemiologic categories with acute and chronic hepatitis B and from 76 hemophiliacs and drug addicts with hepatitis B antibodies for hepatitis D markers. Hepatitis D markers were common in hemophiliacs, drug addicts, Afghanistanis, prisoners and hemodialysis patients; rare in persons from other hepatitis-B endemic areas, persons with sporadic hepatitis B and homosexual men; and absent in health-care workers and institutionalized mentally retarded persons. No change was observed in the frequency of this infection d

BACKGROUND: Posttransplant combined lamivudine (LAM) and immunoglobulin (HBIg) prophylaxis is the gold standard in the case of single hepatitis B virus (HBV), but is still not recommended in the case of patients coinfected with hepatitis delta virus (HDV).
METHODS: We compared two consecutive groups of chronic HDV carriers who survived >6 months after liver transplantation of the risk of recurrence, survival and HBIg requirements: 21 received passive prophylaxis (HBIg group) and 25 were treated with combined prophylaxis (LAM+HBIg group). The immunoprophylaxis schedule was the same in both gro

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) affects nearly 5% of people globally who are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus, according to the World Health Organisation. The prevalence of HDV in the United States is considered lower than in other countries. However, HDV seroprevalence studies of the US population are limited, and reported seroprevalences vary. To improve diagnoses, universal HDV testing of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive specimens has been proposed. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of HDV infection within the United States in HBsAg-positive specimens

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), and chronic HBV-HDV coinfection is considered the most severe form of viral hepatitis. When compared with HBV mono-infection, HBV-HDV coinfection is associated with higher rates of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this review, we aim to elucidate the complex relationship between HDV infection and the development of HCC. The exact mechanisms underlying the carcinogenic potential of HDV remain to be fully elucidated. Evidence suggests that HDV has both indirect and direct oncogenic effec

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a serious cause of liver-related mortality in patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Determination of genotypes of HDV and phylogenetic analysis are important for better understanding the pathogenesis of the liver diseases associated with HBV infection. The aim of this study was to determine the genotype or genotypes of HDV among chronically infected patients with HBV in eastern Turkey.
METHODOLOGY: A group of 113 patients infected with HBV and HDV were included in this study. The samples taken from the patients were analyzed by reverse tr

To investigate the prevalence of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection in different time periods between 1973 and 1988, antibody to hepatitis delta antigen (anti-HD) was tested for in sera collected from 1088 cases with acute or chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection treated at Kure National Hospital. Between 1979 and 1983, anti-HD was first detected in 16% (four of 25 cases) of patients with acute hepatitis B, in 6.8% (11 of 161 cases) of asymptomatic HBV carriers and 26% (51 of 196 cases) of those with chronic liver disease. Except for this time period anti-HD was hardly detected. These f

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15-20 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis delta virus (HDV), which is approximately 5 % of people with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). Sub-Saharan Africa has high HDV prevalence, leading to worse clinical outcomes among people who are HIV/HBV/HDV tri-infected. There are limited data on HDV prevalence among people with HIV (PWH) who are HBV-infected and uninfected in Botswana. We, therefore, determined HDV prevalence among PWH in Botswana.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study utilizing archived plasma samples from PWH with results

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) seems to strongly suppress hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication, although little is known about the mechanism of this interaction. Both these viruses show a dynamic distribution of mutants, resulting in viral quasispecies. Next-generation sequencing is a viable approach for analyzing the composition of these mutant spectra. As the regulatory hepatitis B X protein (HBx) is essential for HBV replication, determination of HBV X gene (HBX) quasispecies complexity in HBV/HDV infection compared to HBV mono-infection may provide information on the interactions b

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been identified as major causes of morbidity and mortality in Pakistan because HDV causes infection only in the presence of HBV. Coinfection with both hepatitis viruses can lead to a more severe acute form of disease and to an increased risk of fulminant hepatitis. HDV infection differs in its distribution and severity depending on the geographical distribution, and several genotypes of HDV have been identified so far.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to establish the HDV and HBV genotypes in chronically in

The presence of hepatitis B virus and delta agent markers was investigated in 41 patients referred during the years 1970-1985 with fulminant hepatitis classified as type B or non-A non-B and compared to findings in patients with uncomplicated hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis B infection. 13 patients had no markers of hepatitis B and delta infection and were classified as non-A non-B hepatitis. The remaining 28 patients were all HBsAg and IgM anti-HBc positive and 14 (50%) had evidence of delta infection. In contrast, only 13/71 patients (18%) with acute benign hepatitis B had evidence of delt

The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) RNA detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in acute and chronic D hepatitis and to correlate with HDV-RNA detection by dot blot and hepatic delta antigen. Serum samples from 33 patients with acute hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive hepatitis (15 with hepatitis B and D coinfection, 8 with HDV superinfection, and 10 with acute hepatitis B), 85 patients with chronic HBsAg-positive hepatitis (73 with chronic D hepatitis and 12 with chronic B hepatitis), and consecutive serum samples from nine

Despite the universal vaccination program, there are still regions and territories with a high prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus infection (HBV), such as the Amazon basin, where several indigenous communities live. Additionally, Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is a defective that requires the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) for the assembly and release of de novo viral particles. Therefore, hepatitis D could be the result of HBV/HDV coinfection or HDV superinfection in individuals with chronic hepatitis B. Among the high prevalence HDV populations are indigenous communities of America. This stud

BACKGROUND: The geographical distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) genotypes is uneven and has its own clinical and organizational implications for health systems. Despite the introduction of vaccination and successful antiviral therapy the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B (with or without delta agent) increased over the past 5 years. This study aimed for the first time to investigate the molecular epidemiology of HBV and HDV in Kazakhstan.
METHODS: Total 834 chronic hepatitis B (with or without delta agent) patients were included to the study from November 2017

In vitro cell culture experiments and animal models have demonstrated that hepatitis delta virus (HDV) can theoretically propagate being enveloped by human pathogenic viruses other than hepatitis B virus (HBV), namely hepatitis C virus (HCV) and dengue virus. However, the clinical relevance of these findings and whether HDV replication occurs in real-world hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative HCV patient cohorts remain unknown. To this aim, we analysed 323 HCV-RNA-positive and HBsAg-negative sera for the presence of HDV-RNA and anti-HDV antibodies (anti-HDV). All 323 (100%) samples wer

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) are major sources of acute and chronic hepatitis. HDV requires the envelope proteins of HBV for the processes of assembly and infection of new cells. Both viruses are able to infect hepatocytes though previous studies have failed to determine the mechanism of entry into such cells. This study began with evidence that suramin, a symmetrical hexasulfated napthylurea, could block HDV entry into primary human hepatocytes (PHH) and was then extrapolated to incorporate findings of others that suramin is one of many compounds that can block acti

HDV infectivity particularly related to sexual activity has been difficult to establish. We investigated the prevalence of HDV in a high risk urban male population currently evaluated for HIV infection. Fourth-eight homosexual or bisexual men (96% positive for HIV) being routinely followed in the outpatient clinic, 40 sera obtained randomly from male homosexuals and 24 HBsAg carriers were examined by ELISA and Western Blot. HDV RNA was assessed by slot-blot after hybridization with cDNA probe from a recombinant plasmid (pS-1). [None of the 48 male subjects or from a recombinant plasmid (pS-1).

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection has been granted orphan disease status by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency owing to its rarity and relatively limited research and treatment options. Turkey is considered an endemic country for the virus. We aimed to provide a current and updated country- and region-specific HDV infection prevalence.
METHODS: In this meta-analysis, we searched databases, including MEDLINE, PUBMED, EMBASE, and UlakBim (Turkish Medical Index) published between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2022. We included blood donor st

The hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a unique pathogen with significant global health implications, affecting individuals who are coinfected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). HDV infection has profound clinical consequences, manifesting either as coinfection with HBV, resulting in acute hepatitis and potential liver failure, or as superinfection in chronic HBV cases, substantially increasing the risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Given the complex dynamics of HDV infection and the urgent need for advanced research tools, this article introduces vHDvDB 2.0, a comprehensive HDV full-l
