[The ependymal lining of the infundibular recess in males and hermaphrodites in small ruminants in scanning electron microscopy].

A scanning electron microscope was used to study the surface of the ependymal epithelium of the lower part of the third cerebral ventricle of rams, he-goats, and in one goat with a developmental sexual disorder (testicular hermaphroditism). During mating, the apical membranes of the ependymal tanycytes of the rams and billy goats were found to be covered by numerous blebs (ependymosecretion). It was only in the billy goats in the mating season (not in the rams) that individual supraependymal cells with protrusions forming "ruffled membranes" were present on the surface of the infundibular rece

Oysters in transition: hermaphrodite oysters display unique DNA methylation patterns in gill tissue.

BACKGROUND: European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) are sequential hermaphrodites that alternate sex in response to environmental change. Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, are often involved in sex reversal through influencing gene transcription. Knowledge on the epigenetic mechanisms underlying sex reversal in hermaphrodite bivalves is limited to gonadal tissue and previous studies have only compared DNA methylomes of males and females. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess whether sex-specific DNA methylation can be identified in somatic gill tissue of the flat oyster. RESULTS:

New species and new genus of Pseudohaploporinae (Digenea): Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n. (Digenea: Pseudohaploporinae) from Vietnamese mullet fish.

Two new species of Pseudohaploporinae, Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n., are described from intestines of the Vietnamese mullet fish Moolgarda seheli and Osteomugil cunnesius, respectively. Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. differs from two known Pseudohaploporus species, P. vietnamensis and P. planiliza, by the absence of a diverticulate hermaphroditic duct and muscular sphincters at the proximal end of the hermaphroditic sac. Metrically, P. pusitestis sp. n. is close to P. vietnamensis and differs from this species and from P. planilizum by lower

Mitochondrial defects triggered by amg-1 mutation elicit UPRmt and phagocytic clearance during spermatogenesis in C. elegans.

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of many biological processes. During spermatogenesis, post-transcriptional regulation of mitochondrial gene expression is mediated by nuclear-encoded mitochondrial RNA-binding proteins (mtRBPs). We identified AMG-1 as an mtRBP required for reproductive success in Caenorhabditis elegans. amg-1 mutation led to defects in mitochondrial structure and sperm budding, resulting in mitochondria being discarded into residual bodies, which ultimately delayed spermatogenesis in the proximal gonad. In addition, mitochondrial defects triggered the gonadal mitochondrial unfo

Hermaphroditic origins of anisogamy.

Anisogamy-the size dimorphism of gametes-is the defining difference between the male and female sexual strategies. Game-theoretic thinking led to the first convincing explanation for the evolutionary origins of anisogamy in the 1970s. Since then, formal game-theoretic models have continued to refine our understanding of when and why anisogamy should evolve. Such models typically presume that the earliest anisogamous organisms had separate sexes. However, in most taxa, there is no empirical evidence to support this assumption. Here, we present a model of the coevolution of gamete size and sex a

Protein expression patterns and metal metabolites in a protogynous hermaphrodite fish, the ricefield eel (Monopterus albus).

BACKGROUND: The ricefield eel Monopterus albus undergoes a natural sex change from female to male during its life cycle, and previous studies have shown the potential mechanisms of this transition at the transcriptional and protein levels. However, the changes in protein levels have not been fully explored, especially in the intersexual stage. RESULTS: In the present study, the protein expression patterns in the gonadal tissues from five different periods, the ovary (OV), early intersexual stage gonad (IE), middle intersexual stage gonad (IM), late intersexual stage gonad (IL), and testis (TE

Sublethal heat reduces overall reproductive investment and male allocation in a simultaneously hermaphroditic snail species.

The exposure to sublethally high temperature reduces reproductive performance in diverse organisms. Although this effect has been particularly emphasized for males or male reproductive functioning, it remains largely unknown whether the effect of heat on fertility is sex-specific. Here we examined the impact of sublethally high temperature on male and female functions in a simultaneously hermaphroditic snail species, Lymnaea stagnalis. Examining hermaphrodites is useful to evaluate the sex-specific impacts of heat exposure, since they possess male and female functions within a single individua

Sperm transfer and reproductive biology in species of hermaphroditic bivalves (Galeommatoidea: Montacutidae).

The histology of the reproductive organs is studied in the protandric hermaphroditic Tellimya ferruginosa. In NW Europe the species reproduces from May through August. Sperm transfer takes place when mature testis follicles are transplanted to the gills or walls of the mantle cavity in recipient hermaphroditic or female bivalves. Transplantation is accompanied by histological changes and sperm cells are released when transplants perish with age. Details are given on the reproduction in Montacuta percompressa which takes place from March through October in North Carolina, USA. All shelled bival

The C. elegans sex-determining GLI protein TRA-1A is regulated by sex-specific proteolysis.

TRA-1A is the sole representative in Caenorhabditis elegans of the Gli transcription factor family. Its activity is required to specify all somatic female cell fates in XX hermaphrodites. We have found that TRA-1 protein levels are much higher in hermaphrodites than in males, and that the difference is attributable to the predominance in hermaphrodites of C-terminally truncated isoforms that are nearly undetectable in males. Our results support a model in which TRA-1A is negatively regulated by male-specific proteolysis that depends upon specific TRA-1A protein sequences and upon the activity

[A gonadoblastoma in a true hermaphrodite. A case history (author's transl)].

The gonadoblastoma has been found in patients with gonadodysgenesis of a pure or mixed variety or who have male pseudo-hermaphroditism. This gonadic tumour is rarely found in true hermaphroditism. This case history would seem to be the first that has been reported in France. The patient had been followed since birth because of having an intersex state with doubtful external genital organs and male internal genital organs consisting of a testis on the left side and feminine ones consisting of an ovary on the right. The caryotype was 46 XY. The gonadoblastoma was discovered at the age of 18 foll

Cooperation promotes the evolution of separate sexes from hermaphrodites with unitary growth.

Most animals have specialized into separate sexes but most plants remain hermaphroditic. The underlining cause for this is still unclear. Here we address this question by evolutionary stable strategy analysis and exact calculation of frequency-dependent selection and genetic drift in geographically structured populations. Reproductive investments of hermaphrodites are divided into male and female functions, and each sex requires linear investments that increase linearly with successful gamete number and reusable investments (RIs) that increase less than linearly. Individuals specializing into

Meta-analysis of gonadal transcriptome provides novel insights into sex change mechanism across protogynous fishes.

Protogyny, being capable of changing from female to male during their lifetime, is prevalent in 20 families of teleosts but is believed to have evolved within specific evolutionary lineages. Therefore, shared regulatory factors governing the sex change process are expected to be conserved across protogynous fishes. However, a comprehensive understanding of this mechanism remains elusive. To identify these factors, we conducted a meta-analysis using gonadal transcriptome data from seven species. We curated data pairs of ovarian tissue and transitional gonad, and employed ratios of expression le

Bidirectional sex change and plasticity of gonadal phases in the goby Lubricogobius exiguus.

Of the ca. 500 known hermaphroditic fish species, bidirectional sex change and simultaneous hermaphroditism are currently known in 69 and 57 species, respectively. Both bidirectional sex change and simultaneous hermaphroditism are predicted to evolve when mating opportunities are limited, such as in cases of low-density distribution and low mobility of individuals. However, the plasticity of sex is adaptive in obtaining mating opportunities, especially when there is mate loss. Pair-rearing experiments and histological observations of gonads of the goby Lubricogobius exiguus, which has low-dens

Development of Germ Cell Isolation and Optimal Cryopreservation Method for Lissachatina fulica (L. fulica).

This study aims to develop an optimized method for cryopreserving the germ cells of Lissachatina fulica (L. fulica) using vitrification, as an alternative approach for conserving endangered snail species. First, we isolated several key reproductive organs, including the sperm oviduct, albumen gland, hermaphrodite gland (ovotestis), and hermaphrodite duct from L. fulica. When the ovotestis was finely chopped, numerous sperm with long tails and distinct heads were observed. The staining of sperm nuclei was confirmed using Hoechst 33342 dye. Since the hermaphrodite gland, referred to as the ovote

What about the males? the C. elegans sexually dimorphic nervous system and a CRISPR-based tool to study males in a hermaphroditic species.

Sexual dimorphism is a device that supports genetic diversity while providing selective pressure against speciation. This phenomenon is at the core of sexually reproducing organisms. Caenorhabditis elegans provides a unique experimental system where males exist in a primarily hermaphroditic species. Early works of John Sulston, Robert Horvitz, and John White provided a complete map of the hermaphrodite nervous system, and recently the male nervous system was added. This addition completely realized the vision of C. elegans pioneer Sydney Brenner: a model organism with an entirely mapped nervou

Genetic variation in age-dependent attractiveness in a fish with a mixed mating system.

Reproductive senescence is common across taxa and females often show a predictable decline in fecundity after maturity. Attending to these age-dependent cues could help males make optimal mate choice decisions. Here, we examined reproductive senescence and male mate choice in the androdioecious mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus), where self-fertilizing hermaphrodites exist with rare males. Hermaphrodites showed a strong decline in fecundity as they aged and genetic lineages varied in their fecundity at both young and old ages. Surprisingly, when given a simultaneous choice between gene

Errors in estimating reproductive parameters with macroscopic methods: a case study on the protogynous blacktip grouper Epinephelus fasciatus (Forsskål 1775).

A size-based, histological analysis of the reproductive life history of the blacktip grouper, Epinephelus fasciatus (Forsskål 1775), was conducted in Indonesia to evaluate the error rate associated with macroscopic reproductive analysis. Histological results indicated that E. fasciatus was protogynous with female L50 at 13.4 cm total length (LT) and a size at sexual transition of 22.0 cm LT. The weight-length relationship for the species was W = 0.011 L3.13. Overall sex ratios were significantly female biased, operational sex ratios were significantly male biased, and sex ratios of mature indi

Development of supermale and all-male Atlantic salmon to research the vgll3 allele - puberty link.

BACKGROUND: Farmed Atlantic salmon are one of the most economically significant global aquaculture products. Early sexual maturation of farmed males represents a significant challenge to this industry and has been linked with the vgll3 genotype. However, tools to aid research of this topic, such as all-male and clonal fish, are still lacking. The present 6-year study examined if all-male production is possible in Atlantic salmon, a species with heteromorphic sex chromosomes (males being XY, females XX), and if all-male fish can be applied to further explore the vgll3 contribution on the likeli

Polymorphic microsatellite markers demonstrate hybridization and interspecific gene flow between lumbricid earthworm species, Eisenia andrei and E. fetida.

The lumbricid earthworms Eisenia andrei (Ea) and E. fetida (Ef) have been used as model organisms for studies on hybridization. Previously they have been identified by species specific sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene of maternal origin ('a' or 'f') and the nuclear 28S gene of maternal/paternal origin ('A' or 'F'). In experimental crosses, these hermaphroditic species produce progeny of genotypes Ea (aAA), Ef (fFF) and hybrids (aAF and fFA) originating by self-fertilization or cross-fertilization. To facilitate studies on new aspects of the breeding biology and hybridization of earthwor
