Oxidation of fatty alcohols to acids in gourami caeca was investigated by measuring the reduction of NAD+ and the formation of labeled hexadecanoic acid from [1(-14)C]hexadecanol. Virtually all dehydrogenase activity is in the microsomal fraction. Maximal activity is obtained with NAD+ as cofactor whereas with NADP+ 60% of that activity is obtained. The enzyme is rather specific for long chain alcohols and 2 NADH are formed for each molecule of hexadecanol oxidized to acid. It is stabilized by mercaptoethanol, and completely inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate. The activity is optimal at pH 9

Bioconversion of CO2 into liquid fuels represents a promising strategy for advancing carbon-neutral biomanufacturing. Clostridium muellerianum (P21), a recently identified acetogen, has demonstrated the capability to convert CO2 into C2-C6 alcohols. However, the process parameters affecting product distribution and chain elongation remain uncharacterized. This study evaluated the effects of medium composition, temperature, headspace pressure, and CO supplementation on CO2 fermentation by strain P21. Batch fermentation in assay bottles showed that corn steep liquor (CSL) medium and elevated tem

Plants under stress emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can influence neighbouring plants. While most studies have focused on the role of VOCs priming the fitness of neighbouring plants, their involvement in priming bioactive compound accumulation in herbal plants remains less clear. In this study, we treated Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi using copper solution, identified the VOCs emitted from S. baicalensis and VOCs accumulated internally in tissues, and quantified total flavonoid and major bioactive compounds. We found that copper treatment inhibited the emissions of acetic acid but

In blood-feeding dipterans, olfaction plays a role in finding hosts and, hence, in spreading pathogens. Several pathogens are known to alter olfactory responses and behavior in vectors. As a mosquito-borne pathogen, Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) can affect humans and cause great losses in livestock. We test the influence of RVFV infection on sensory perception, olfactory choice behavior and activity on a non-biting insect, Drosophila melanogaster, using electroantennograms (EAG), Y-maze, and locomotor activity monitor. Flies were injected with RVFV MP12 strain. Replication of RVFV and its per

The prevalence of asthma is considerably high among women of childbearing age. Most asthmatic women also often have other atopic disorders. Therefore, the differentiation between patients with atopic diseases without asthma and asthmatics with coexisting diseases is essential to avoid underdiagnosis of asthma and to design strategies to reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life of patients. Hence, we aimed for the first time to conduct an analysis of volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath of women of childbearing age as a new approach to discriminate between asthmatics with oth

Microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from fungi are known as their secondary metabolites from environmental sources. However, their physiological roles remain to be unclear. Even though the roles are still unknown, VOCs are deliberately released to convey information to both homologous and non-homologous organisms. We investigated the effects of single VOCs (hexanal, benzaldehyde, heptanal, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 3-octanone, 2-undecanone, 3-octanol, 2-Phenylethanol, 2-phenyl-2-propanol, phenylbenzaldehyde, 2-pentadecanone, β-trans-bergamotene, β-bisabolene, 2-methyl-5 -(1-methylethy

A toxicologic and dermatologic review of 2-ethyl-1-butanol when used as a fragrance ingredient is presented. 2-Ethyl-1-butanol is a member of the fragrance structural group branched chain saturated alcohols. The common characteristic structural elements of the alcohols with saturated branched chain are one hydroxyl group per molecule, and a C(4)-C(12) carbon chain with one or several methyl side chains. This review contains a detailed summary of all available toxicology and dermatology papers that are related to this individual fragrance ingredient and is not intended as a stand-alone document

Harvest timing is an important management factor associated with the volatile composition of wine. This one-vintage study investigated selected free aroma-related volatile compounds in Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir wines produced under standardised microvinification from grapes harvested at early, standard and late maturity-related stages in four commercial vineyards. Free volatile polyfunctional thiols, six-carbon (C6) alcohols, free monoterpenes, rotundone and free 13-carbon (C13) norisoprenoids were quantified using gas chromatographic methods, and data were evaluated using exploratory univa

Poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-polysarcosine (PCL-b-PSar) block copolymers (BCPs) emerge as a promising alternative to conventional poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) BCPs for biomedical applications, leveraging superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, we synthesized two series of PCL-b-PSar BCPs with controlled polymerization degrees (DP of PCL: 45/67; DP of PSar: 28-99) and low polydispersity indexes (Đ ≤ 1.1) and systematically investigated their crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) in alcohol solvents (ethanol, n-butanol, and n-hexanol). It was found that the

Seventeen aroma-active volatiles, previously identified with high flavor dilution factors in fresh, pink Colombian guavas (Psidium guajava L.), were quantified by stable isotope dilution assays. On the basis of the quantitative data and odor thresholds in water, odor activity values (OAV; ratio of concentration to odor threshold) were calculated. High OAVs were determined for the green, grassy smelling (Z)-3-hexenal and the grapefruit-like smelling 3-sulfanyl-1-hexanol followed by 3-sulfanylhexyl acetate (black currant-like), hexanal (green, grassy), ethyl butanoate (fruity), acetaldehyde (fre

Three phase liquid phase microextraction (three phase LPME) technique coupled with HPLC-UV has been applied as a sensitive and efficient sample preparation method to determine phenylacetic acid (PAA) as a biomarker of depressive disorders and phenylpropionic acid (PPA) in biological fluids. The compounds were extracted from 3.0 ml aqueous solution with the adjustment of pH at a fixed value in the range of 2.0-3.5 (donor solution) into an organic phase (1-hexanol) layered on the surface of the donor solution and finally back-extracted into 4.0 microl of the acceptor microdrop (pH 11.1) located

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) influence chemical communication among plants, herbivores, and natural enemies and contribute to indirect plant defense. Previous work by our group characterized volatile emissions from sorghum following simulated herbivory and identified DMNT and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate among consistently induced compounds, but their behavioral activity toward the stem-borer parasitoid Cotesia flavipes was not determined. Four-week-old sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) plants were mechanically wounded and treated with Chilo partellus larvae oral secretions. Head-space

This paper describes practical enzymatic procedures for the synthesis of (R) and (S) 1-deuterohexanol, a useful building block for chiral poly isocyanated liquid crystals. Alcohol dehydrogenases from horse liver and Pseudomonas catalyzed the reduction of hexanal with deuterated NAD (NADD) resulting in 50% and 89% yields of (R) and (S) 1-deuterohexanol, respectively. The deuterated cofactor was regenerated in situ by alcohol dehydrogenase catalyzed oxidation of ethanol-d6 or 2-propanol-d8. The (S) alcohol was also synthesized by the horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase reduction of 1-deuterohexana

Some aspects of olfactory sensitivity in the pulmonate Helix pomatia L. were studied by means of neurophysiological and behavioral methods. Single fiber recordings were carried out in the olfactory nerve of the posterior tentacles. Olfactory stimulations with different odors were performed by means of a continuous air stream. The order of neuronal sensitivity to different odors was as follows: ethanol > or = ethyl acetate > pentanol > hexanol > octanol > or = diethyl malonate > vanillin. Furthermore, the results revealed a relative specificity for some substances. A comparison between neurophy

BACKGROUND: Long-term application of synthetic fungicides leads to severe residue risks and pathogen drug resistance during postharvest storage of Korla fragrant pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis), making it urgent to develop low-residue gaseous biopreservation agents. This study investigated the fumigant biocontrol capacity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by desert-derived Streptomyces rochei TRM68247 against two dominant postharvest pathogens, Valsa pyri and Alternaria gaisen.
METHODS: Whole-genome sequencing was performed to identify biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) associated with

The present study investigates whether changes in headspace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of refrigerated cooked meatballs (beef and pork) can predict the transition from freshness-to-spoilage driven by microbial growth. Hence, freshly prepared food samples were portioned into air-tight glass containers, stored at 6 °C, and analysed at regular intervals. Microbial growth was determined using culture-based techniques, while headspace VOCs were trapped on Tenax TA sorbent and analysed by thermal desorption heart-cut gas chromatography with flame ionisation and mass spectrometric detectors. The current upsurge in resistance to conventional antibiotics, as well as high cost of orthodox medical treatment, called for the use of medicinal plants as an alternative therapy. This research was aimed at determining the antibacterial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus seed extracts (Jackfruit as it is locally called) in the treatment of diarrhoea. Ethanolic and hexanolic seed crude extracts of the plant were screened for antidiarrhoeal activity against bacteria isolated from clinical samples (methicillin-resistant and susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aer

Electrochemical aptamer-based (EAB) sensors, a minimally invasive means of performing high-frequency, real-time measurement of drugs and biomarkers in situ in the body, have traditionally been fabricated by depositing their target-recognizing aptamer onto an interrogating gold electrode using a "sequential" two-step method involving deposition of the thiol-modified oligonucleotide (typically for 1 h) followed by incubation in mercaptohexanol solution (typically overnight) to complete the formation of a stable, self-assembled monolayer. Here we use EAB sensors targeting vancomycin, tryptophan,
