Effect of calcium addition and acidification on the quality characteristics of canned okra (Hibiscus esculentus L).

A study was conducted on calcium chloride treatments of canned okra acidified by adding either acetic, citric, lactic, malic or tartaric acids or by lactic fermentation. The quality of the processed okra was determined by physical, chemical, microbiological and sensory analyses after a two month storage period at room temperature. The results indicated the possibility of processing high quality canned okra by small canneries, with low cost equipment and low energy requirements. The acidification procedures ensure minimal risk of botulism.

The Chronic Elevated Consumption of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus Results in Kidney Damage Associated with Excess H2S.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is essential for renal function; however, it is toxic at high concentrations. H2S is increased during reductive stress (RS). Increased antioxidant capacity and reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) characterize a rat model of RS associated with chronic consumption of 6% Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus (HSL). Here, we evaluate if chronic consumption of an infusion of HSL causes kidney damage associated with an increase in H2S. Twenty-one Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Group 1: rats received plain tap water ad libitum (G1); Group 2: rats received an ad libitum

Evaluating the potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa beverage to address the prevalence of iron deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa.

The potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. beverage as a dietary iron source for sub-Saharan Africans was investigated. The target was to provide 6 mg of iron through 250 mL of the beverage daily. However, the iron content of the dried hibiscus calyces was determined to be 9.73 ± 0.31 mg/100 g and from that only ∼30% was extractable, resulting in 0.93 ± 0.19 mg Fe/250 mL of the selected beverage formulation. Therefore, ferrous sulfate was explored as a fortificant. The beverage contains polyphenols which could form non-absorbable chelation complexes with iron during digestion. Subsequently, the e

Bioavailability study of a polyphenol-enriched extract from Hibiscus sabdariffa in rats and associated antioxidant status.

The aqueous extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa have been commonly used in folk medicine. Nevertheless, the compounds or metabolites responsible for its healthy effects have not yet been identified. The major metabolites present in rat plasma after acute ingestion of a polyphenol-enriched Hibiscus sabdariffa extract were characterized and quantified in order to study their bioavailability. The antioxidant status of the plasma samples was also measured through several complementary antioxidant techniques. Impaired Renal Function Due to Reductive Stress Is Associated with Excessive Consumption of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus.

Reductive stress (RS) results from the overactivity of the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems and from excess antioxidant agents that neutralize reactive oxygen species. Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus (HSL) is a natural source of antioxidant molecules that can overload the antioxidant system. Twenty-one Wistar rats were divided into three groups: group 1 (G) G1: rats that consumed a 6% HSL infusion for one month (HSL + 6%), G2: rats that consumed a 6% HSL infusion for one month and were then given natural water for another month (HSL ± 6%), and G3: rats with natural drinking water.

Alteration of the aortic vascular reactivity associated to excessive consumption of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus: Preliminary findings.

The moderate production of reactive oxidative species (ROS) is important because ROS act as second messengers. However, their depletion through the over-activity of the antioxidant system may lead to reductive stress (RS) which is characterized by an increase in reducing equivalents and an elevation of some components of the antioxidant system disturbing redox homeostasis. Hibiscus sabdariffa Linnaeus (HSL) is a plant with antioxidant properties that provides compounds that favor the antioxidant system. However, excess chronic consumption could lead to the over expression of the antioxidant en

Antioxidant and Antithrombotic Activities of Kenaf Seed (Hibiscus cannabinus) Coat Ethanol Extract in Sprague Dawley Rats.

Oxidative stress has been implicated in deadly lifestyle diseases, and antioxidants from plant sources are the primary option in the treatment regime. Kenaf seeds are the storehouse of potential natural antioxidant phytoconstituents. Perhaps, none of the studies documented the phytoconstituents and their antioxidant potential from Kenaf seed coat so far. Thus, the current study focuses on exploring the protective effect of Kenaf Seed Coat Ethanol Extract (KSCEE) against sodium nitrite and diclofenac-induced oxidative stress in vitro (red blood cell and platelets model) and in vivo (female Spra

Protective Effect of Anthocyanin-Enriched Polyphenols from Hibiscus syriacus L. (Malvaceae) against Ultraviolet B-Induced Damage.

Anthocyanin-enriched polyphenols from the flower petals of H. syriacus L. (Malvaceae, AHs) possess anti-septic shock, anti-oxidant, and anti-melanogenic properties. However, whether AHs positively or negatively regulate ultraviolet B (UVB)-mediated photoaging and photodamage remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the protective effect of AHs against UVB-induced damage. We examined the photoprotective effects of AHs on UVB-induced apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS). AHs prevented UVB irradiation-induced apoptosis of HaCaT ker
