Most species of social insects have singly mated queens, but in some species each queen mates with numerous males to create a colony with a genetically diverse worker force. The adaptive significance of polyandry by social insect queens remains an evolutionary puzzle. Using the honeybee (Apis mellifera), we tested the hypothesis that polyandry improves a colony's resistance to disease. We established colonies headed by queens that had been artificially inseminated by either one or 10 drones. Later, we inoculated these colonies with spores of Paenibacillus larvae, the bacterium that causes a hi

When sharing a space with others, many species including humans evolved a compromise regulating occupancy influenced by social determinants. For example, students in a classroom tend to sit close to their friends, keeping the same spots across days, revealing the social structure in the classroom. This place preference suggests that factors such as social hierarchy and affiliation can shape space utilization, contrasting with random walk models of agents moving at random in any given direction. Here, we asked whether spatial occupancy of macaques within two unisex groups of four individuals, r

Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) [corrected] populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore com

Attack of dominant colony males of an albino rat (Rattus norvegicus) strain, on introduced strangers, produced a non-random distribution of bites, with ventral trunk virtually never bitten. Also, vibrissae-contact of attacker and defender interfered with bites to the defender's head and upper back. The specific agonistic reactions of attacking and defending rats appeared to involve strategies based on these limitation on attack: defenders utilized 'boxing' and lying 'on-the-back' behaviour, which interposed ventral trunk and vibrissae between attacker and defender. In turn, the 'lateral displa

People often make decisions in a social environment. The present work examines social influence on people's decisions in a sequential decision-making situation. In the first experimental study, we implemented an information cascade paradigm, illustrating that people infer information from decisions of others and use this information to make their own decisions. We followed a cognitive modeling approach to elicit the weight people give to social as compared to private individual information. The proposed social influence model shows that participants overweight their own private information rel

Animals commonly modify their behavior in the presence of a conspecific or in response to signals. This is particularly true in the context of aggressive exchanges, which animals use to form networks of social relationships and to communicate social status associated with those relationships. Although hierarchical structures are a widespread phenomenon that has been studied extensively, the dynamic communication processes, specifically chemical communication in this review, is relatively overlooked. In particular, it is the exchange of information during agonistic interactions that mediates hi

In humans and animals, body posture is used in social and affective contexts to communicate social information, signal intentions, and prepare the individual for adaptive action. However, though stable individual differences in affect and social cognition are well studied, body posture continues to be typically studied in the context of state variation, and it remains unknown if trait-level differences in body posture exist and carry information about the individual. In our article, we show in a large sample (total N = 608 across five studies) that individual differences in body posture measur

Female social dominance characterizes many strepsirrhine primates endemic to Madagascar, but currently there is no comprehensive explanation for how or why female lemurs routinely dominate males. Reconstructing the evolutionary pressures that may have shaped female dominance depends on better understanding the mechanism of inheritance, variation in trait expression, and correlating variables. Indeed, relative to males, many female lemurs also display delayed puberty, size monomorphism, and 'masculinized' external genitalia. As in the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), a species characterized by

We assess life history from birth to death in male mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) living in a semifree-ranging colony in Gabon, using data collected for 82 males that attained at least the age of puberty, including 33 that reached adulthood and 25 that died, yielding data for their entire lifespan. We describe patterns of mortality and injuries, dominance rank, group association, growth and stature, and secondary sexual character expression across the male lifespan. We examine relationships among these variables and investigate potential influences on male life history, including differences in

This pilot study sought information on African American men's preferences for partner notification methods for a common sexually transmitted infection called trichomoniasis. Two focus groups of African American men were convened at a public STI clinic where they were being treated for trichomoniasis. The groups identified a sexual hierarchy in men's preferences for methods of partner notification. The hierarchy consisted of main men (Cake Daddies), second men (Second Hitters), and third or fourth men (Third Players), with placement depending on age, income, and social status. Health department

OBJECTIVES: Under the context of both demographic transitions and spousal caregivers of disabled individuals facing intensifying care burdens, the effects of Long-Term Care Insurance on spousal caregiver mental health remain under-explored. This study aimed to assess its mental health spillover effects and moderation effects of care needs, policy density and region hierarchy.
METHODS: Using four waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data, we employed the staggered difference-in-differences method to evaluate the mental health spillover effects of Long-Term Care Insurance on

Previously, perceived competence of and attraction toward targets categorized by race showed in-group bias and no bias, respectively. Consequently, previous investigators regarded intergroup perception as a compromise between the norms of in-group bias and fair-mindedness. An alternative hypothesis for such findings is that attraction is not as relevant a dimension for intergroup discrimination as is competence. To test contrasting predictions of these hypotheses, the present authors asked participants from the majority and minority groups in Singapore (ns = 320) to evaluate either competence

Social dominance is fundamental to social organization across species and plays a critical role in shaping behavior, physiology, and health. Despite the complexity of social organization, researchers have successfully developed animal models to investigate social dominance under controlled experimental conditions across a variety of species, including male rodents. However, measures of social rank among female mice remain poorly understood, limiting the generalizability of commonly used social dominance assays. Here, we systematically evaluated four commonly used behavioral assays of social do

OBJECTIVES: Social comparison is a socio-cognitive process that can increase risk for suicidal thoughts through feelings of defeat and entrapment. However, its role as a risk factor for racially minoritized individuals remains unclear. This study examined whether social comparison and subjective social rank (one's perceived position derived from social comparison) predict suicidal thoughts via defeat and entrapment particularly for racially minoritized young adults.
METHODS: College students from predominantly White institutions (N = 409) completed online surveys at baseline and one-month fol

Anabolic steroids and other androgens, such as testosterone propionate (TP), have a facilitatory role in the expression of aggressive behavior. Based upon literature indicating an inverse relationship between aggression and the central neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT), the present study was undertaken to investigate the role of 5-HT in androgen-induced aggression. In this study, an animal model of aggression involving competition between male rat pairs for sugar pellets was used to investigate the effects of TP. When TP was administered daily (30 mg/kg) to nondominant rats, these animals beca

The hallmark of social insects is their caste system: reproduction is primarily monopolized by queens, whereas workers specialize in the other tasks required for colony growth and survival. Pheromones produced by reigning queens have long been believed to be the prime factor inhibiting the differentiation of new reproductive individuals. However, there has been very little progress in the chemical identification of such inhibitory pheromones. Here we report the identification of a volatile inhibitory pheromone produced by female neotenics (secondary queens) that acts directly on target individ

The development of successful social-cognitive abilities requires one to track, accumulate, and integrate knowledge of other people's mental states across time. Regions of the brain differ in their temporal scale (i.e., a cortical temporal hierarchy) and those receptive to long temporal windows may facilitate social-cognitive abilities; however, the cortical development of long timescale processing remains to be investigated. The current study utilized naturalistic viewing to examine cortical development of long timescale processing and its relation to social-cognitive abilities in middle chil

How does the human brain support reasoning about social relations (e.g., social status, friendships)? Converging theories suggest that navigating knowledge of social relations may co-opt neural circuitry with evolutionarily older functions (e.g., shifting attention in space). Here, we analyzed multivoxel response patterns of fMRI data to examine the neural mechanisms for shifting attention in knowledge of a social hierarchy. The "directions" in which participants mentally navigated social knowledge were encoded in multivoxel patterns in superior parietal cortex, which also encoded directions o

BACKGROUND: Living in a social dominance hierarchy presents different benefits and challenges for dominant and subordinate males and females, which might in turn affect their cognitive needs. Despite the extensive research on social dominance in group-living species, there is still a knowledge gap regarding how social status impacts brain morphology and cognitive abilities.
METHODS: Here, we tested male and female dominants and subordinates of Neolamprologus pulcher, a social cichlid fish species with size-based hierarchy. We ran three executive cognitive function tests for cognitive flexibil

The formation of positive and negative relations between individuals in social networks can be described by different approaches. Two prominent mechanisms are structural balance and status hierarchies. Balance motivates stability among friends and enemies in triads (e.g. an enemy of my friend is my enemy). Status considers respect and disregard originating from social hierarchy (e.g. positive relations towards those we respect). We demonstrate that integrating the two mechanisms through the concept of ego dynamics is key to understanding observable patterns in many social groups. We propose an
