High levels of new neuron addition persist when the sensitive period for song learning is experimentally prolonged.

Socially reared zebra finch males imitate a song they hear during posthatching days 30-65; during this time, many new neurons are added to the high vocal center (HVC), a forebrain nucleus necessary for the production of learned song. New neuron addition drops sharply after day 65, and no new songs are imitated. In contrast, male zebra finches reared in isolation from other males have more variable songs at day 65 and thereafter can still imitate new sounds (Eales, 1985). We show that, in isolate birds, a greater number of new neurons continues to be added to HVC during the next 85 d, and this

Vocal features based Parkinson's detection: An ensemble learning approach.

Parkinson's disease (PD) primarily affects the central nervous system. In 2019, over 8.5 million cases were reported, with numbers continuing to rise. This growing prevalence emphasizes the urgent need for early detection and preventive strategies. To resolve this, numerous methods have been introduced, one of them being machine learning technique. By employing deep learning methods on the large-scale datasets, the early prediction and detection of PD is possible. These methods should be precisely evaluated on the basis of vocal features and the best method to predict this neurodegenerative ai

Bilateral LMAN lesions cancel differences in HVC neuronal recruitment induced by unilateral syringeal denervation. Lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum.

Twenty-six-day-old male zebra finches received (1) unilateral section of their tracheosyringeal nerve, (2) bilateral lesions of the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN), and (3) both operations. All birds were kept with an adult, singing male as a tutor until day 65. Tracheo-syringeal nerve-cut birds were able to imitate this model, but LMAN-lesioned birds were not. Bromodeoxyuridine, a marker of cell division, was injected intramuscularly during post-hatching days 61-65 and all birds were killed at 91 days of age. The number of bromodeoxyuridine+ neurons in the hig

[A CASE OF INDUCIBLE LARYNGEAL OBSTRUCTION UNSUCCESSFULLY TREATED AS SEVERE ASTHMA WAS WELL CONTROLLED AFTER APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSIS AND INSTRUCTION OF THERAPEUTIC BREATHING MANEUVERS].

Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) refers to respiratory disorders caused by airflow limitation in the larynx, including vocal cord dysfunction, and may sometimes be misdiagnosed as bronchial asthma (BA). Here, we report the case of an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with BA in infancy. He was referred to our Allergy Center and was taking a high dose of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) due to frequent coughing from the age of 10 years and persistent coughing following COVID-19 infection at the age of 11. However, the patient continued to experience frequent coughing attacks and repeated visits to th

Apneic anesthesia with intermittent ventilation for microsurgery of the upper airway.

Apneic anesthesia with intermittent ventilation (AAIV) has been used in 250 procedures on the larynx and trachea at Indiana University Medical Center since October 1989. Initially employed for laryngeal papilloma removal in children, this anesthetic technique is now used for other procedures and in adult patients. The advantages of AAIV include improved visualization of the airway, absence of combustible material, and lack of vocal cord motion during surgery. No significant complications have occurred with AAIV. The high degree of safety for this anesthetic technique relates largely to the con

Bi-layered microflap surgery for the treatment of anterior glottic web.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior glottic webs are epithelium-covered fibrous tissue formations at the anterior commissure, leading to synechiae between the bilateral vocal folds. They manifest with symptoms ranging from hoarseness to airway obstruction. However, treating anterior glottic webs are challenging due to their high recurrence rates. In this study, we report our treatment outcomes using the bi-layered microflap surgery. METHODS: This retrospective case series analyzed nine patients with anterior glottic webs from a tertiary medical center. All patients underwent the bi-layered microflap techn

Autologous Tragal Perichondrium Graft for Vocal Fold Scar and Sulcus Vocalis.

Between 2006 and 2016 in a Tertiary Academic Center, 11 patients underwent phonomicrosurgery with tragal perichondrium graft placement in Reinke's space for the treatment of sulcus (Ford type 2) and vocal fold scar. A total of six patients out of 11 had an additional autologous fat implantation in order to improve the glottic closure. We evaluated the functional outcome using the Spanish validated version of the VHI- 30 before and 6 months after the surgery. We also measured the subjective appreciation of the obtained outcome, a perceptual voice evaluation using GRBAS scale, and changes in vid

Arytenoid sparing during irradiation of early stage vocal cord cancer.

PURPOSE: Optimal position of the posterior field border when irradiating early stage vocal cord cancer is controversial. Several experts recommend moving the posterior field border 5-15 mm anteriorly after 50-60 Gy to decrease the chance of arytenoid edema. This article will evaluate the effect of field position on arytenoid dose. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 5 x 5 cm opposed lateral fields centered on the glottis were set up on a patient with typical anatomy. Isodose profiles were obtained with equally weighted 6 MV photon beams attenuated with 15 degree wedge filters using contours from an axial

The Diagnosis and Time of Onset of Voice Disorders in Patients with Chronic Cough.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic cough is a complaint of up to 46% of patients referred to specialist clinics. Patients with cough often report hoarseness at the time of the cough diagnosis. When the cough fails to resolve with standard medications, referrals to other specialists including otolaryngologists are made. This is the first study to report the specific diagnosis and length of time it took to obtain a specific voice disorder diagnosis in patients with chronic cough. STUDY DESIGN: Case Series METHODS: The charts of 105 patients referred to the Loma Linda Voice and Swallowing Center were reviewed.

Acoustic and Aerodynamic Clusters Within Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

PURPOSE: Primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) is a form of vocal hyperfunction with no preexisting tissue trauma to the vocal folds. There are no known structural or neurological causes of pMTD, and there is rarely obvious, confirmatory evidence to reliably diagnose individuals accurately. Furthermore, acoustic and aerodynamic measurements taken during voice assessments vary widely within this population. The purpose of this study was to find subgroups within a sample of pMTD patients based on acoustic and aerodynamic measurements. We use a computational approach to elucidate what has large

[Meaning and Mechanisms of Birdsong: Inspiration for Pneumology].

In contrast to humans, the location where sound is produced in birds is not the larynx, but rather the so-called "vocal box" (scientific term "Syrinx"). In some species the syrinx is located at the bifurcation point of the trachea into the two main bronchi (tracheal vocal head), while in some in the main bronchi (bronchial vocal head). During inspiration, part of the air flows into the lungs, and the part needed for singing flows into the air sacs adjacent to the lungs. During expiration, air leaves the air sacs and flows through the syrinx, where the song is created. When birds sing in two vo
