Snowmelt dynamics and stream flow response to climate change in a mountainous basin, western Himalaya.

Snow is a critical component of the Himalayan hydrological cycle, sustaining streamflow, recharging groundwater, rejuvenating springs, maintaining soil moisture, and supporting various water-dependent sectors. However, climate warming is reducing seasonal snow cover and altering snowmelt timing, thereby increasing uncertainty in the relative contributions of snowmelt, rainfall, and groundwater to streamflow and limiting reliable prediction of future water availability. To address this scientific question, we integrated 24 years of satellite-derived snow-cover observations with field-based stab

Spatio-temporal patterns and factors controlling the hydrogeochemistry of the river Jhelum basin, Kashmir Himalaya.

River Jhelum is a major source of water for growing population and irrigation in the Kashmir Himalaya. The region is trending towards water scarcity as well as quality deterioration stage due to its highly unregulated development. The existence of few literature on various aspects of the basin prompts us to study the spatio-temporal variability of its physicochemical parameters and thereby to understand the regulating hydrogeochemical mechanisms based on 50 samples collected during high flow (June 2008) and low flow (January 2009) periods. The water chemistry exhibited significant spatial vari

Sleep architecture changes during a trek from 1400 to 5000 m in the Nepal Himalaya.

The aim of this study was to examine sleep architecture at high altitude and its relationship to periodic breathing during incremental increases in altitude. Nineteen normal, sea level-dwelling volunteers were studied at sea level and five altitudes in the Nepal Himalaya. Morning arterial blood gases and overnight polysomnography were performed in 14 subjects at altitudes: 0, 1400, 3500, 3900, 4200 and 5000 m above sea level. Subjects became progressively more hypoxic, hypocapnic and alkalinic with increasing altitude. As expected, sleep architecture was affected by increasing altitude. While

Acetazolamide attenuates lactate accumulation during high-altitude ascent in the Himalayas: A randomized pilot field study.

AIM: Exposure to high altitude induces hypobaric hypoxia and consequent ventilatory and metabolic adaptations, including increased anaerobic glycolysis and lactate production. Acetazolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor widely used for altitude sickness prophylaxis, enhances ventilatory drive through renal bicarbonate excretion and mild metabolic acidosis. We aimed to evaluate its effects on blood lactate accumulation and on complementary ventilatory and oxygenation parameters during progressive high-altitude ascent. METHODS: We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled pilot field trial d

Biofilmed multifarious rhizobacterial isolates of tomato rhizosphere of North-Western Himalayas promote plant growth in tomato.

BACKGROUND: Tomato production is often limited by poor soil health and nutrient deficits, which lower agricultural productivity. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) provide a sustainable approach to improve plant development and soil fertility. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to 1) isolate and screen PGPR from the rhizosphere soil of tomato-growing regions in Himachal Pradesh, India; 2) evaluate the selected PGPR for biofilm production; 3) characterize and molecularly identify the biofilm-producing isolates; and 4) assess their efficacy in enhancing tomato plant growth.

Unilateral Left-Sided High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema Following Rapid Ascent to a City in the Himalayas.

High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) is a medical emergency commonly observed in people ascending to altitudes above 9000 ft. The condition predominantly presents with bilateral clinical and radiological findings. In rare cases, where unilateral lung involvement is seen, a right lung predilection is usually noted. We present a case of HAPE with unilateral left lung involvement in a young man upon reintroduction to a high-altitude area. He presented with dyspnea at rest and was found to have severe hypoxemia and tachycardia. Clinical and radiological evidence showed unilateral left lung finding

Status of ivermectin resistance in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) populations from north-western Himalayas, India.

Status of ivermectin resistance was studied in 16 isolates of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks collected from north-western Himalayan region of India using larval immersion test (LIT). Regression graphs of probit mortality of larval ticks plotted against log values of concentrations of ivermectin were utilized for the determination of slope of mortality, lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC95) and resistance ratios (RRs). Out of 16 isolates examined, 15 were found resistant against ivermectin. Level II resistance was detected in eleven isolates (RR50 ranged from 5.72 to 7.62), whereas f

[Evaluation of cardiopulmonary function in Japanese Himalayan climbers to the Himalayas underin a hypobaric hypoxic chamber].

The Tokai University and Tibet University Scientific Friendship Expedition 2001 succeeded in reaching the summit of Kula Kangri (7,538 m) in the Himalrayas without supplementary O2 in May, 2001. Before this expedition, the cardiopulmonary function of all members was evaluated using a hypobaric hypoxic chamber in which the barometric pressure was gradually lowered to a simulated altitude of 6000 m. Whenever a member's PaO2 was lower than 40 torr during the experiment, supplementary O2 was given. The results were divided into two groups, Group A and Group B, according to whether supplementary O2

Explaining the exceptional 4270 m high elevation limit of an evergreen oak in the south-eastern Himalayas.

Unlike the well-understood alpine treeline, the upper range limits of tree taxa that do not reach the alpine treeline are largely unexplained. In this study, we explored the causes of the exceptionally high elevation (4270 m) occurrence of broad-leaved evergreen oaks (Quercus pannosa) in the south-eastern Himalayas. We assessed the course of freezing resistance of buds and leaves from winter to summer at the upper elevational limit of this oak species. Linked to leaf phenology, we analyzed freezing resistance and assessed minimum crown temperature for the past 65 years. We also examined potent

Genomic analysis identified a potential novel molecular mechanism for high-altitude adaptation in sheep at the Himalayas.

Sheep has successfully adapted to the extreme high-altitude Himalayan region. To identify genes underlying such adaptation, we genotyped genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of four major sheep breeds living at different altitudes in Nepal and downloaded SNP array data from additional Asian and Middle East breeds. Using a di value-based genomic comparison between four high-altitude and eight lowland Asian breeds, we discovered the most differentiated variants at the locus of FGF-7 (Keratinocyte growth factor-7), which was previously reported as a good protective candidate for pul

The recent deposition of persistent organic pollutants and mercury to the Dasuopu glacier, Mt. Xixiabangma, central Himalayas.

High mountains may serve as condensers for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and the ice/snow core can provide long-term records of atmospheric deposition of pollutants. In this study, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in firn core from Dasuopu Glacier were analyzed and the seasonal variation and deposition flux of these pollutants were investigated. PCB 28 was always detected in samples from different firn core layers and concentrations of PCB 28 were in the range of 0.09-0.3 ng/l. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and total DDTs (p-p'-DDD and p-p'-DDT) wer

Synnovation and confluence explain disparities in species richness across the Andes and Hengduan-Himalaya Mountains.

Mountain regions harbor extraordinary biodiversity, yet the mechanisms underlying this pattern remain unclear. Here we use the phylogenetically and geographically replicated radiations of Berberis (barberries) in the Andes and Hengduan-Himalaya Mountains (HHM) to test how functional trait innovations, orogeny, and climate change influenced the buildup of species richness in each region. In barberries (Berberis), the successive evolution of deciduousness and small, densely-veined leaves enabled the lineage to take advantage of expanding alpine and subalpine habitats in the HHM during the Miocen

Greenhouse gas emissions from freshwater wetlands of the Doon Valley, Northwest Himalaya, India.

The subtropical wetlands of the Doon Valley function as significant net sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), with methane (CH₄) dominating the radiative forcing (∼62% of CO₂-equivalent emissions) despite lower molar fluxes than carbon dioxide (CO₂). High-resolution field measurements reveal that CH₄ emissions are primarily controlled by anaerobic conditions, sustained soil moisture, elevated temperatures, and low dissolved oxygen, whereas CO₂ fluxes exhibit greater temporal variability and respond strongly to thermal regimes and ionic strength. A key biogeoclimatic insight is the seasonal decou

Exploring the determinants of thyroid disorders in high-altitude western Himalaya: a geospatial and epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of high-altitude on thyroid function is an emerging field of research. Apart from environmental stress through hypoxia and iodine deficiency, socioeconomic, demographic, and dietary factors may play a role, particularly for those with pre-existing thyroid conditions. This study explored the prevalence and determinants of thyroid disorders (TDs) among the Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes in the high-altitude western Himalayas. METHODS: We assessed potential risk factors, with focus on environment, socioeconomy and lifestyle based on household survey data. A stratified random s
