During the 2-year period 1978-1979, a total of 2109 hip fractures (of the proximal end of the femur) occurred in Oslo. The age- and sex-specific annual incidence was the highest ever reported. A previous hip fracture had occurred in 13 per cent of the women and 6.8 per cent of the men. In 1979, a total of 5920 hip fractures was reported in Norway. Compared with Oslo, all other counties had a lower incidence. The number of fractures in Oslo was five times greater in 1982 compared with 1950. This increase cannot be explained only by the increasing number of elderly persons.

BACKGROUND: Concomitant ipsilateral hip and distal radius fractures are uncommon, and little research has been published about these injuries. Our aim was to evaluate the characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries.
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 35 concomitant hip and distal radius fractures were identified, comprising the study group. The characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries were evaluated and analyzed. Another matched control group with isolated hip fractures was collected for comparison of patient characteristics, fall mechanism, fracture pattern, b

Pertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients represent a major health issue. The available surgical options are fixation with extramedullary devices, intramedullary nailing, and arthroplasty. Intramedullary nailing for hip fractures has become more popular in recent years. Advantages of intramedullary nailing for hip fracture fixation include a more efficient load transfer due to the proximity of the implant to the medial calcar, less implant strain and shorter lever arm because of its closer positioning to the mechanical axis of the femur, significantly less soft tissue disruption and perios

Nowadays, fracture surgery represents a big part of the orthopedic surgeon workload, and usually has associated major clinical and social cost implications. These fractures have several complications. Some of these are medical, and other related to the surgical treatment itself. Medical complications may affect around 20% of patients with hip fracture. Cognitive and neurological alterations, cardiopulmonary affections (alone or combined), venous thromboembolism, gastrointestinal tract bleeding, urinary tract complications, perioperative anemia, electrolytic and metabolic disorders, and pressur

Forty-two cases of ipsilateral hip and femoral shaft fractures are reviewed. All patients were treated operatively for both fractures, with the exception of the shaft fracture in one child. Several different methods of fixation were used. The most common method was placement of multiple pins or screws around a previously placed intramedullary rod. Initial rodding of the shaft was not associated with avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Nonunion of the femoral neck occurred in three patients as a result of initial displacement and subsequent malreduction. Delays in operative fixation up to s

A prospective follow-up study was performed on 282 patients with hip fractures with respect to early complications and their possible relation to patient or treatment variables. A hip fracture patient needed at least 1-2 hours in the operating theatre (length of anaesthesia), while the operating time was half or less. The operative trauma, measured in operating time and blood loss, was greater in patients with trochanteric fractures than in those with fractures of the femoral neck. Reduction was difficult and only half the internal fixations were satisfactory, as judged from X-rays at the end

INTRODUCTION: Timely surgery within the next calendar day is recommended for native hip fractures (NHF) according to NICE guidelines. In contrast, no standardized fast-track protocols exist for periprosthetic hip fractures (PPFx), potentially resulting in surgical delays. This study aimed to evaluate time to surgery and reasons for delay in surgically treated PPFx patients, and to assess complications and mortality according to surgical timing. A previously published NHF cohort was used as a clinically relevant benchmark reflecting the established geriatric native hip fracture pathway.

BACKGROUND: The ideal thromboprophylaxis regime following lower limb arthroplasty and proximal femur fractures remains controversial. Guidelines disagree on the type of chemical prophylaxis, its dose or duration. This article describes a method of monitoring venous thromboembolism (VTE) rates following Total Hip (THA), Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and surgery for hip fractures (NOF#).
METHODS: Over 3 years, all patients investigated for VTE were analysed using Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS). All positive scans were then cross-referenced using PACS and local registry data to s

BACKGROUND: Failed treatment of an intertrochanteric fracture typically leads to profound functional disability and pain. Treatment with repeated attempts to gain union and to preserve the host femoral head usually is preferred for young patients, but salvage treatment with hip arthroplasty may be considered for selected older patients with poor bone quality, bone loss, or articular cartilage damage. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the results and complications of hip arthroplasty performed as a salvage procedure after the failed treatment of an intertrochanteric hip fracture.

The cascade of events leading to hip fracture is: a fall, protective responses, impact to the hip, local energy absorption and bone strength. A fall from standing height on the hip corresponds to a force of about 3500 N and the bone strength of the proximal femur in elderly women and men ranges between 2000 to 6000 N. Efficient hip protective systems have been developed and may be a significant factor in the prevention of hip fractures among the elderly with propensity to fall and osteoporosis. Theoretically, more than 90 per cent of all hip fractures can be prevented, and a substantial reduct

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Treating options of failed internal fixation include revision fixation and salvage arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results, complications and the final functional outcome associated with modular hip arthroplasty.
METHODS: Modular arthroplasty was performed in 11 patients due to failed treatment of peritrochanteric fracture. Each patient examination included Trendelenburg test, Harris Hip Score, SF-36, and X-rays of the hip. Examinations were recorded and a paired t test was applied for further statistic analysis.
RESULTS: Two years postoperativ

OBJECTIVE: Patients with diabetes have an increased risk of osteoporosis and shorter life expectancy. Hip fracture (HF) is the most serious consequence of osteoporosis and is associated with increased mortality risk. We aimed to assess the association of antidiabetic medications with HF and the post-hip fracture mortality risk among diabetic patients ≥50 years.
DESIGN: In this nationwide case-control study 53 992 HF cases and 112 144 age-, sex- and region-matched non-hip fracture controls were analyzed. A cohort of hip-fractured diabetic patients were followed-up for an all-cause mortality.

UNLABELLED: This study examined hip fractures during a 5-year period at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC). There was a general increase in proportions of fragility hip fractures during this period.
PURPOSE: Fragility hip fractures are expected to increase in low-resource countries. This study examined hip fractures in the osteoporotic age group during a 5-year period at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC), which is located in Moshi, Tanzania.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all hip fracture patients above the age of 50 who were admitted to KCMC between Ja

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2020eng
Cost-effective preventive interventions are necessary for tackling the increasing number of hip fractures, which are frequently occuring as a serious consequence of osteoporosis. Several interventions have been available for preventing and treating osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to systematically review and critically appraise studies that assessed cost-effectiveness of hip protectors for the prevention of hip fractures and to investigate the effects of age, gender and residence situation on cost-effectiveness. A systematic review was conducted in order to identify economic evaluation

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported health-related quality of life is an important outcome measure when assessing the quality of hip fracture surgery. The frequently used EQ-5D index score has unfortunately important limitations. One alternative can be to assess the distribution of each of the five dimensions of the patients' descriptive health profile. The objective of this paper was to investigate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after hip fractures.
METHODS: Data from hip fracture operations from 2005 through 2012 were obtained from The Norwegian Hip Fracture Register. Patient reported HRQo

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data comparing periprosthetic hip fracture (PPHFx) outcomes and resource utilization to native fractures. Many surgeons consider periprosthetic hip fractures to be more severe injuries than native fractures. The aim of this systematic review is to characterize the outcomes of PPHFx and assess their severity relative to native hip fractures (NHFx).
METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis systematic review was conducted using Medline, Biosis, and Cinahl. Primary outcomes were time to surgery, length of stay (LOS), cost of m
