Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, benign, and self-limiting condition that typically affects young women and is uncommon in children or males. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with generalized lymphadenopathy involving cervical, axillary, submandibular, and inguinal nodes, along with mild fever and pain. A series of fine-needle aspiration cytology and lymph node biopsies over 3 years initially showed reactive and acute lymphadenitis. The diagnosis of Kikuchi's disease was eventually confirmed on histopathology of an axilla

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL), also known as Kikuchi disease, is a relatively rare sub-acute necrotic localized lymphadenitis. This benign, self-limiting condition is characterized by fever, painful lymphadenopathy, skin rash, and other systemic symptoms. Due to its nonspecific presentation, unclear etiology, and pathogenesis, HNL has a low incidence rate in clinical practice. Insufficient awareness among clinicians and pathologists can easily lead to misdiagnosis. This article reported a 27-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital with fever, neck pain, and enlar

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), first described independently by Kikuchi and Fujimoto in 1972, is a subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis of unknown cause. Although most frequent in young Asian women, KFD has a worldwide distribution. Clinically, KFD is characterized by lymphadenitis of one or more lymph nodes, predominantly in the posterior cervical region, fever, and leukopenia in up to 50% of cases. Extranodal manifestations can occur, especially skin lesions and aseptic meningitides. Diagnosis is usually confirmed by analysis of samples from an excisional biopsy of the affected nodes. Histolo

Infectious lymphadenitis is often biopsied in the differential diagnoses of malignant disease. Since the repertoire of lymph nodes which react to exogenous stimuli is limited, malignant lymphomas may enter the clinical and morphological differential diagnosis. In a morphological sense, infectious lymphadenitis is defined as an infection of lymph node tissue. Therefore, the effector phase of the inflammatory reaction will act against lymphatic tissue, in contrast to common physiological hyperplasia. Follicular reactions, in addition to follicular hyperplasia, are seen in HIV-associated lymphade

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) or necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis, was described separately by both Kikuchi and Fujimoto in Japan in the early 1970's. Despite its rarity in the pediatric population, it is an important differential in persistent lymphadenopathy. Familial cases of KFD in the literature are rare. Here we describe the first reported case of KFD in non-identical twin sisters.
CASE PRESENTATION: Twin 1 presented with a 3-week history of worsening right-sided cervical lymphadenopathy, daily fevers, significant lethargy, weight loss and arthralgia of her knees and a

Kikuchi disease is a type of benign, self-limiting necrotizing lymphadenitis that occurs most commonly in young women and usually manifests as palpable cervical lymph nodes and fever. Patients with an unusual location of lymph node involvement can be misdiagnosed with malignant disease. Here, we report a case of Kikuchi disease in a 15-year-old girl presenting with persistent fever for 2 weeks. Imaging studies, including ultrasonography, CT, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT, revealed splenomegaly and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, axilla, abdomen, retroperitoneum, and inguinal region. Tularemia is emerging as an important differential diagnosis of necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis, particularly in the head and neck region. The causal organism, Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative coccoid bacterium. Tularemia usually presents with necrotizing granulomatous purulent lymphadenitis featuring multiple mostly small granulomas with geographic necrosis bordered by palisades of histiocytes. Diagnosis is mainly based on these characteristic but non-pathognomonic histological features in conjunction with negative tests for mycobacterial infections and serological confirmati

We present the case of a patient diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) along with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), possibly triggered by infection or autoimmunity. Both AS and KFD involved a similar immune pathway. Hence, clinicians should consider the possibility of KFD when lymphadenopathy is observed, especially in patients with infection or underlying autoimmune diseases.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease (KFD) is a rare, benign condition characterized by histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis predominantly in the cervical region and prolonged fever. It has a higher prevalence in the Japanese and Asian populations although it may be seen in a wide geographic distribution, but rare are the cases reported in Europe. While symptoms resolve spontaneously between 2 weeks and 2 months, complications are described in: CNS, eyes, respiratory tract, kidney and liver. KFD also described an association with systemic lupus erythematosus. This paper describes a rare case of Kikuchi

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis is a rare cervical inflammatory lymphadenitis that is most commonly seen in young Asian women. It is mainly characterized by lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, fever, nocturnal sweats, myalgia, weight loss, and arthralgia, and commonly follows a self-limited course. The differential diagnosis is challenging as many other conditions such as malignant lymphoma, metastatic disease, tuberculosis and infectious lymphadenopathies can present in a similar way. We present an unusual case of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease masquera

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, benign, and self-limited inflammatory lymphadenitis. It predominantly affects young adults and typically presents with tender cervical lymphadenopathy, low-grade fever, and constitutional symptoms such as malaise, night sweats, and weight loss. Though initially recognized in Asian populations, cases are now reported worldwide. The etiology remains uncertain, but KFD has recognized overlap with autoimmune diseases. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjögren's disease (SjD) account for most coexis

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, benign and self-limiting disorder that characteristically presents with fever and cervical lymphadenopathy. Articular manifestations in the form of arthralgias are common but frank arthritis is distinctly rare and dactylitis has not been reported yet. Herein, we describe a young boy who presented with arthritis and dactylitis as the initial manifestation of KFD. A 14-year-old boy presented with a two-week history of fever, generalized lymphadenopathy and asymmetric polyarthritis, enthesitis and dactylitis of the

INTRODUCTION: Kikuchi-Fujimoto (KF) disease, also known as necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis, is a rare cause of fever of unknown origin. Most commonly seen in Japanese populations, it presents with fever and diffuse lymphadenopathy. KF can present a diagnostic challenge as its presentation can mimic sepsis, autoimmune disease, and/or malignancy. We present a case of KF disease presenting with innumerable pulmonary nodules and suspected sepsis.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year old African-American male inmate with no past medical history presented to the Emergency Department with two witnessed gene

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, was initially described as a distinct histologic pattern of lymphadenitis generally associated with a benign self-limited clinical course. While most common in Southeast Asia, where KFD was initially described in 1972 in young women, this lesion has since been reported in patients of virtually any age, gender, or ethnic background from a variety of geographic locations, including the United States. In addition, cases showing extranodal involvement have been described. The spectrum of clinical and histologic fe

INTRODUCTION: Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis is a benign disease predominantly occurring in young women which etiology remains unknown and revealed by cervical lymphadenitis and/or prolonged fever.
OBSERVATIONS: This report describes a survey of four patients who developed Kikuchi's lymphadenitis occurring concomitantly with LES in one case and actinomycosis in another case. The definite diagnosis is usually made through histopathological examination of a lymph node biopsy. The evolution was favorable under corticosteroid therapy in two patients, antibioti

We report the case of a 45-year-old female patient previously diagnosed with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus who presented with a one-week history of fever, tender erythematous nodules on her limbs, and palpable lymphadenopathy. Two incisional biopsies showed histiocytic infiltrates with abundant nuclear debris in the dermis and at the dermosubcutaneous junction with absence of neutrophils, characteristic of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD). The dermatologic and dermopathologic details of KFD are very heterogeneous and yet poorly described. We have reviewed the literature regarding KFD ca
