BACKGROUND: An association between histologic category of benign breast disease (BBD) and breast cancer risk has been well documented. However, the influence of a positive family history (FH) on breast cancer risk among women with biopsy-confirmed BBD is less certain.
METHODS: The authors conducted a nested case-control study of BBD and breast cancer risk among 2005 women who were enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study. Cases were women with breast cancer who had a previous benign breast biopsy (n = 395 women). Controls were women who also had previous biopsy-confirmed BBD but were free from br

Background: COVID-19 outbursts have been registered worldwide within care homes with asymptomatic transmission combined with shortage/inaccuracy of diagnostic tests undermining the efforts at containment of the disease. Nursing facilities in Lombardy (Italy) were left with no, or limited, access to testing for 8 weeks after the outbreak of COVID-19. Methods: This study includes 246 residents and 286 workers of three different nursing homes in Brescia-Lombardy. Clinical questionnaires and rapid serology tests were devised to integrate the data of the first available RT-PCR screening. Follow-up

Background: Type II diabetes is associated with breast cancer in epidemiologic studies. Pregnancy also modifies breast cancer risk. We hypothesized that women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which shares pathogenesis and risk factors with type II diabetes, would have greater invasive breast cancer risk than parous women without a history of GDM.Methods: We conducted a prospective analysis among parous women in the Nurses' Health Study II, with mean age 35 years in 1989. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare risks of incident invasive breast ca

BACKGROUND: Adequate control of blood pressure reduces the risk of recurrent stroke. We conducted a randomized controlled study to determine whether home blood pressure monitoring with nurse-led telephone support would reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension and a history of stroke.
METHODS: We recruited 381 participants (mean age 72 years) from outpatient and inpatient stroke clinics between Mar. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2009. Nearly half (45%, 170) of the participants had some disability due to stroke. Participants were visited at home for a baseline assessment and randomly allocat

Parity, age at first birth, age at menarche, and a family history of breast cancer have each been associated consistently with breast cancer risk. Whether this increase in risk is mediated, at least in part, through changes in endogenous hormone levels is unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the relationships between these factors and plasma hormone levels in 216 healthy postmenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study (United States). The hormones evaluated were estradiol, percent and total free estradiol, percent and total bioavailable estradiol, estrone, estrone sulfate, and pro

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a severe multisystem autoimmune disease that predominantly affects women. Its etiology is complex and multifactorial, with several known genetic and environmental risk factors, but accurate risk prediction models are still lacking. We developed SLE risk prediction models, incorporating known genetic, lifestyle and environmental risk factors, and family history.
METHODS: We performed a nested case-control study within the Nurses' Health Study cohorts (NHS). NHS began in 1976 and enrolled 121,700 registered female nurses ages 30-55 from 11 U.S. s

Nursing research has developed unevenly across history, shaped by shifting institutional structures, professional aspirations and societal demands. Yet existing historical reviews have largely adopted descriptive approaches, while few have applied an explicit theoretical lens to explain why this unevenness persists. This paper addresses that gap by examining the historical development of nursing research through Greenwood's trait-based professionalisation framework. Drawing on a narrative historical review spanning seven chronological periods, the analysis reveals a recurring pattern of partia

This historical position paper assesses the work of British social reformer and nursing pioneer, Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845). Specifically, it considers how Fry's lived experience of mental and physical ill-health is likely to have influenced her work and describes her often-overlooked pioneering contribution to contemporary mental health nursing. Evidence includes literature gathered from Cinahl, PsycInfo, PubMed and Google Scholar. Fry's memoir (1847) provided substantive context and source material was also drawn from Mary Bruin's (2005) transcription of Fry's journal. Fry experienced substan

The purpose of this study is to trace a parallel between the medical discourse content and the expected and stereotyped nurses behavior at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a historic-social approach in which authors analysed the speeches used by nurses and physicians at nursing and medicine schools. The analysis of the physicians discourse compared to nurses discourse revealed the formation of a mentality shaped by the medical power that wanted them "holy" and servile.

During the period of the Agrarian Revolutionary War, the war led to a sharp increase in the number of wounded and sick in the Central Soviet Area (Fujian) and the epidemic of infectious diseases. Therefore, the Red Army and the Soviet government needed to quickly establish a nursing team. Nursing staff are trained through various means, such as nursing schools, nursing training teams in Red Army rear hospitals, and training classes for female nurses. In order to make up for the serious shortage of nursing staff, local people were also widely mobilized to organize nursing teams to help the medi

This paper critically examines the evolution of nursing leadership over the past century, exploring how changing historical, social and professional contexts have influenced styles and their ongoing relevance to contemporary nursing practice. Using a historical analysis guided by Lewenson and Hermann's framework, primary sources, including archival materials and foundational texts, were examined alongside secondary scholarly literature and historical commentaries. Leadership approaches were reviewed by decade and mapped against key nursing theories, healthcare developments and broader social m

Just as people living in the early 1900s experienced the horrors of World War I followed by the Spanish influenza epidemic, those of us surviving the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic will have our lives forever changed. Both pandemics defied the capabilities of prevailing healthcare and public health. Since there was no known cure in either pandemic, much depended on nurses to fight the battle against the viruses. History has shown pandemics are occurring more frequently and are unpredictable in timing and severity. Therefore, we need to place focus on the valuable lessons from the century's

Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. Dr. Helen Erickson is known internationally as a holistic nurse leader, theorist, educator, researcher, and colleague who pushes the leading edge of nursing, insisting that nursing attend to clients' perspectives first. She is the primary author of the nursing theory modeling and role-modeling. Erickson articulates differences between wholism and holism, arguing that the latter is necessary to facilitate wholeness, quality of life, and well-being. In this dialogue, she reveals what influenced her journey from country girl to internationally known nurse.

Two private organizations, the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and the Folkhälsan Association, established the Public Health Nursing institution in Finland in the beginning of the 1920's. These organizations laid the foundation of, developed and supervised the activities of the Public Health Nursing institution, which became statutory in 1944. They also started the training of public health nurses, which in 1931 was taken over by the state. In 1924 instructions were issued stating the duties, responsibilities and rights of the public health nurse. She had to visit each home in her district

Experiences of female Army nurses-their devotion to duty, contributions, and successes as well as their trials, tribulations, and sufferings--during the Spanish-American War and afterwards are described. How service by the heroines of '98 led to a change of attitude by the Army Medical Department is sketched. At the beginning of the War with Spain, the Medical Department had been reluctant to use female nurses; by the end of the war, the nurses had so demonstrated their value that Congress established permanent Army Reserve Nurse Corps.
