HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Sexual and Gender Minority Homeless Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people account for up to 40% of youth experiencing homelessness. SGM youth experiencing homelessness report a higher likelihood of engaging in behavior that puts them at risk of acquiring HIV. To address this increased risk, it is necessary to identify difference in awareness and use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among SGM youth experiencing homelessness. METHODS: Using intake forms from a single service provider in New York City, New York, that specializes in providing shelter and health care for SGM youth experiencing homelessness, we con

Violence, Trauma, Mental Health, and Substance Use Among Homeless Youth Juggalos.

Insane Clown Posse is a musical duo whose fans are known as Juggalos. Many homeless youths (HY) identify as Juggalos, most likely because the group's music embraces poverty and being an outsider in mainstream society. Juggalos are stereotyped as being violent, undereducated, poor, racist, crime-committing youth, and in 2011 the FBI officially labeled Juggalos as a gang. However, little is known about the intersection of HY and Juggalos. A convenience sample of Los Angeles-area, drop-in service-seeking HY completed a self-administered questionnaire (N = 495). In the sample, 15 % of HY identifie

Can Better Emotion Regulation Protect against Suicidality in Traumatized Homeless Youth?

A substantial majority of homeless youth and young adults (HYA) experience abuse prior to and during homelessness. HYA also have high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal behavior. This study investigated relationships between traumatic experiences, PTSD symptoms, substance use, and the protective effects of emotion regulation on outcome variables suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Data were drawn from a sample of 398 HYA interviewed at 3 drop-in centers in Los Angeles County. A bivariate logistic regression modeling strategy was employed to examine relationships amo

The mental and physical health of homeless youth: a literature review.

Youth homelessness is a growing concern in the United States. Despite difficulties studying this population due to inconsistent definitions of what it means to be a youth and homeless, the current body of research indicates that abuse, family breakdown, and disruptive family relationships are common contributing factors to youth homelessness. Moreover, the experience of homelessness appears to have numerous adverse implications and to affect neurocognitive development and academics, as well as mental and physical health. Substance use, sexually transmitted infections, and psychiatric disorders

Who is Supporting Homeless Youth? Predictors of Support in Personal Networks.

Homeless youth lack the traditional support networks of their housed peers, which increases their risk for poor health outcomes. Using a multilevel dyadic analytic approach, this study identified characteristics of social contacts, relationships, and social networks associated with the provision of tangible and emotional support to homeless youth (N = 419, M age = 20.09, SD = 2.80). Support providers were likely to be family members, sex-partners, or non-street based contacts. The provision of support was also associated with contacts' employment and homelessness status, frequency of contact,

Child abuse in blended households: reports from runaway and homeless youth.

OBJECTIVE: Building upon prior research that reveals an elevated risk of abuse to children in blended households, the study considers whether risk of abuse varies by the type of non-related parent figure (i.e., stepparent, adoptive parent, or cohabiting adult) in residence. METHOD: A sample of 40,000 youths that sought services from runaway and homeless youth shelters in the US was examined. Holding constant the presence of a natural parent, the study evaluated the risk of abuse by the presence and type of an additional parent figure in the home. RESULTS: Compared with other household types,

Youth Homelessness: Prevalence and Associations with Weight in Three Regions.

This study investigated the utility of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to document associations between homeless status and weight while estimating the prevalence of youth homelessness in three regions. A school-based survey, the YRBS includes youths who have been difficult to involve in past research. Analysis of 2011 YRBS data produced population-weighted estimates of youth homelessness prevalence separately for Connecticut, Delaware, and Philadelphia. Public high school students anonymously reported their housing status, height, and weight on the YRBS. Height and weight were converted

Homeless youth's overwhelming health burden: A review of the literature.

Homelessness has reached epidemic proportions in Canada. Canadian children and adolescents are the most vulnerable because youth comprise the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. A systematic literature review was undertaken using MEDLINE, Web of Science and the Homeless Hub (www.homelesshub.ca) to encompass the time frame from January 1990 to June 2009. The following terms were used as key words: 'homelessness', 'homeless youth', 'poverty', 'street youth' and 'runaway'. The present review identified an intersection among education deficits, social service insufficiencies, and p

Youth experiencing transitional and temporary homelessness: A pilot study.

Homeless youth represent a vulnerable and understudied population, particularly those among them who are hidden, experiencing transitional or temporary homelessness. Little research focuses on this group, including the methods and settings to identify and tailor interventions to their circumstances. Given the immediate risks and possible transition to chronic homelessness, their identification is critical for prevention and intervention efforts. This exploratory pilot study investigated transitional and temporary homelessness among youth. The study demonstrated the ability to identify such par

Emotional Health Among Youth Experiencing Family Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Youth who are homeless with adult family members comprise 37% of the US homeless population, yet mental health among this group has not yet been well described. We aimed to compare the risk of suicidality, and factors that may protect against it, between family-homeless and nonhomeless youth. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data, representing 62 034 eighth- to 12th-graders, to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of emotional distress, self-injury, suicidal ideation, and attempted suicide in the past 12 months for youth who experienced family homelessness in the

Youth homelessness in San Francisco: a life cycle approach.

HIV risk behaviors and seroprevalence are particularly high among street youth. Though many programs have been designed to serve them, street youth have low rates of service utilization. The aim of this street-based, ethnographic project was to study the social and cultural context of street life in this population. Data were collected by participant observation, exploratory interviews and semi-structured interviews. Twenty street youth (15-23 years old; six female), recruited from street sites in San Francisco, participated in the interviews. Field notes and transcriptions were analyzed using
