Characterizing the Use of Home-Based Behavioral Health Services Among Children in Foster Care.

BACKGROUND: Children in foster care (FC) experience disproportionately high rates of mental health (MH) needs and frequently use behavioral health services. They are overrepresented in restrictive MH settings and are more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medications. Home-based behavioral health services (HBHS) offer a less restrictive alternative for addressing the complex needs of children in FC, but their use and effectiveness remain understudied. METHODS: Using Medicaid data from 28 states, we examined MH service utilization among children aged 3-18 with primary MH diagnoses across th

Heterogeneous impact of low-income home energy assistance program on energy consumption behavior.

This study leverages utility smart-meter data in a differences-in-difference framework to quantify the effect of low-income home energy assistance program (LIHEAP) funding on energy consumption behavior for 1,351 households in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Results reveal that LIHEAP funding leads to outcomes statistically indistinguishable from zero, although on average, we observe increases in energy consumption for homes that are electrically heated (37 kWh/month) and natural gas heated (0.30 MMBtu/month). Additionally, wide confidence intervals in most of our findings signal substanti

Automated home-cage-like monitoring for assessing innate behaviors in a murine hangover model.

The prevalence of alcohol consumption among the younger generation remains alarmingly high. A hangover is a common short-term consequence observed after consuming alcohol. To effectively study alcohol-induced hangovers, reliable and translational animal models, along with appropriate testing methods, are required. While several testing approaches have been used in hangover-induced mice, they often fail to assess innate behaviors comprehensively and are limited by short observation periods. Although existing studies have developed methods to assess hangover-related behaviors in rodents, few hav

Gestational PBDE concentrations, persistent externalizing, and emerging internalizing behaviors in adolescents: The HOME study.

BACKGROUND: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous environmental chemicals used as flame retardants in commercial and consumer products. Gestational PBDE concentrations are associated with adverse behaviors in children; however, the persistence of these associations into adolescence remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: We estimated the association of gestational PBDE serum concentrations with early adolescent self- and caregiver-reported behaviors at age 12 years and determined the consistency with previously observed associations in childhood with caregiver-reported behaviors in a

An open-source device for measuring food intake and operant behavior in rodent home-cages.

Polycythaemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythaemia (ET) are classified as Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative diseases. Both PV and ET are rare diseases, but the prevalence is high. Patients who have not been treated for the diseases are at great risk of morbidity and mortality as a result of thrombohaemorrhagic events. However, if patients have been well treated, their prognosis is good and life-expectancy approaches normal. This article provides diagnostic tools and flowcharts for treatment of PV and ET. Treatment of PV and ET should be risk-adjusted and individualised. Low-

Course of disinhibited social engagement behavior in clinically referred home-reared preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supporting clinical relevance and persistence of disinhibited social engagement behavior (DSEB) pertains mostly to children reared in institutions and foster care. This study examined the course of DSEB in clinically referred home-reared children from early into middle childhood, and associations with neglect/emotional maltreatment, effortful control, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. METHODS: Disinhibited social engagement behavior was examined in 124 children (82% boys, M = 4.06 years, SD = 0.89), refe

Battling on the Home Front: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Conflict Behavior Among Military Couples.

This study evaluated interpersonal behavior differences among male military service members with and without PTSD and their female partners. Couples (N = 64) completed a 17-minute videotaped conflict discussion, and their interaction behavior was coded using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Within couples, the behavior of partners was very similar. Compared to military couples without PTSD, couples with PTSD displayed more interpersonal hostility and control. Couples with PTSD also exhibited more sulking, blaming, and control

Children who run away from home: risks for suicidal behavior and substance misuse.

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study is to examine the extent to which running away from home as a child is associated with behavioral problems and victimization during childhood and with suicidal behavior and substance abuse during early adulthood. METHODS: A random probability sample comprising 7,461 respondents was interviewed for the 2007 survey of psychiatric morbidity of adults in England. A subsample of 16- to 34-year-old individuals was selected for secondary analysis (N = 2,247). All survey respondents were asked whether they had run away from home and asked specific questions on b

An analysis of the relationships among engagement, agitated behavior, and affect in nursing home residents with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Affect, behavior, and cognition can be considered as basic constructs that dictate human functioning, with intricate and bi-directional relationships among them. Prior to the present study, relationships among these constructs have not been systematically examined within the context of dementia. METHODS: Sample 1 contained 185 nursing home residents with a diagnosis of dementia. Sample 2 contained 117 residents with dementia, all of whom manifested agitated behaviors. Outcome measures included stimulus engagement (assessed via the Observational Measure of Engagement), affect (meas

Attending to emotional cues for drug abuse: bridging the gap between clinic and home behaviors.

Classical conditioning models of addiction provide keys to understanding the vexing discrepancy between substance abuse patients' desire to abstain when they are in therapy sessions and their tendency to relapse. Experiments using these models demonstrate the power of environmental relapse cues and support clinical approaches, including active exposure, aimed at helping patients recognize and withstand them. Internal cues, including emotions and somatic states such as withdrawal, can trigger urges as powerfully as external cues such as people, places, and things associated with prior abuse. Th

Relation between empathy and aggression and behavior compliance among abused group home youth.

Physically abused youth are often described as more aggressive and noncompliant in comparison with normal children, despite inconclusive findings regarding the nature of behavior problems among these youth. The present study investigated whether empathy would be differentially related to aggression and behavior compliance of abused youth within the natural living context of a group home environment. As predicted, results suggest a strong, positive relationship between empathy and lower rates of interpersonal aggression and a strong positive relationship between empathy and higher rates of beha

Behavioral outcomes in Pakistani children and adolescents of mentally ill parents: the role of parental rejection and home environment in externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems.

BACKGROUND: Children of parents with mental illness (COPMI) experience a range of emotional behavioral problems throughout their development, mainly due to family and environmental factors. Therefore, the current study investigated the role of parental acceptance/rejection and chaotic home environment in developing externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems among Pakistani children and adolescents affected by parental mental illness. METHODS: The study followed a cross-sectional research design. A purposive sample of 300 children and adolescents (51.3% girls; Mage =14.31; SDage = 2.23

Entrance-sealing behavior in the home cage: a defensive response to potential threats linked to the serotonergic system and manifestation of repetitive/stereotypic behavior in mice.

The security of animal habitats, such as burrows and nests, is vital for their survival and essential activities, including eating, mating, and raising offspring. Animals instinctively exhibit defensive behaviors to protect themselves from imminent and potential threats. In 1963, researchers reported wild rats sealing the entrances to their burrows from the inside using materials such as mud, sand, and vegetation. This behavior, known as "entrance sealing (ES)," involves repetitive movements of their nose/mouth and forepaws and is likely a proactive measure against potential intruders, which e

Detecting isolated REM sleep behavior disorder at home using a lower-back wearable sensor.

Isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD) is a strong predictor of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly synucleinopathies. Current diagnosis requires overnight video-polysomnography (vPSG) in sleep laboratories. Limited access to vPSG and differences in sleep habits result in diagnostic challenges. Here we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of identifying iRBD from a lumbar-mounted wearable sensor in the home setting and explored night-to-night variability. Seventy-three participants (15 iRBD, 58 controls) underwent vPSG, followed by six nights of wearing a lower-back inertial measurement
