AIDS education and prevention : official publication of the International Society for AIDS Education2023eng
This article describes the development of a video serial drama intervention that was designed to address factors that influence HIV in the United States among Black youth. These include HIV testing, sexual behaviors not protected by condoms, negative attitudes towards sexual minorities, and HIV stigma. Behavior-change principles (social learning theory and education-entertainment) and input from members of the priority audience formed the basis of this 27-episode (3 minutes each) drama for dissemination on multiple platforms, including in public spaces or privately online. The developmental pr

In the United States, 13 million people identify as sexual and gender minorities. The purposes of this article were to (a) examine the associations among sexual orientation concealment and internalized homophobia with HIV knowledge, health literacy, and transactional sex through sexual identity; and (b) assess whether gender expression moderates those relationships in sexual minority men of color. A multigroup mediation path model examined the association between sexual orientation concealment and internalized homophobia on HIV knowledge, health literacy, and transactional sex through sexual i

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China face heightened risks for poor mental health and high-risk behaviors, often shaped by stigma and sociocultural pressures. Drawing on minority stress theory, this study examined whether social avoidance mediates relationships between dimensions of internalized homophobia (internalized heteronormativity, family-oriented identity, and social-oriented identity) and depressive symptoms and sexualized drug use (SDU), and whether associations varied by age and education. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted via Blued. A total of 486 MSM completed vali

OBJECTIVES: There is a continuing need to identify factors associated with risk for HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM), including a need for further research in the ongoing scientific debate about the association of internalised homophobia and sexual risk due partly to the lack of specificity in analysis. We assess the association of internalised homophobia by race/ethnicity within HIV serostatus for a large sample of substance-using MSM at high risk of HIV acquisition or transmission.
METHODS: Convenience sample of substance-using (non-injection) MSM reporting unprotected

BACKGROUND: While growing evidence links Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to mental health disparities among sexual minorities, the mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly in Chinese context, remain insufficiently understood. The intersection of ACEs, cultural values, and internalized stigma among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) represents a critical, yet underexplored, area of investigation.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationship between ACEs and depressive symptoms among Chinese MSM, focusing on the serial mediating effects of filial piety (pragmat

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual and queer (GBQ) men are frequently subjected to minority stressors that have negative impacts on their health. Milestones that include the acceptance and disclosure of sexual identity amongst GBQ men are hence key instruments in understanding the prevalence of internalised homophobia and predicting health outcomes. As such, this work takes a novel approach to deduce the correlates of delayed acceptance of sexual orientation in young GBQ men as a measure of internalised homophobia through retrospective self-reporting and age-based analysis.
METHODS: Participants were

Since 2010, Kazakhstan has experienced an increase in HIV transmission. Men and transgender/gender-expansive people who have sex with men (MSM and TSM) carry a disproportionate HIV burden. Building on Paine et al. (2021), which linked HIV testing to stigma, internalized homophobia, and sexual- and gender-expansive (SGE) community connectedness-this brief report examined biologically confirmed HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). SGE connectedness was significantly associated with HIV infection, while HIV stigma and internalized homophobia were significantly associated with STI

BACKGROUND: Stigma differentially influences HIV and STI care among MSM, especially regarding partner notification practices. Recognizing the heterogeneous behaviors/identities within the category "MSM," we used mixed-methods to assess sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men only (MSMO) and behaviorally bisexual MSM (MSMW) with HIV and/or other STIs.
METHODS: MSMO/MSMW recently diagnosed (< 30 days) with HIV, syphilis, urethritis, or proctitis completed a cross-sectional survey assessing sexual risk behaviors, anticipated disclosure, and sexual partnership characteristics (n = 3

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are disproportionately impacted by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Recent biomedical innovations such as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, STI vaccines and testing offer new prevention tools. However, realising these benefits hinges on GBM disclosing their sexuality and receiving appropriate support from healthcare providers (HCPs). We aimed to understand GBM's experiences of sexual healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand.
METHODS: We conducted an inductive thematic analysis of free-text responses to the Sex and

AIM/OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the level of homophobia and to identify its independent predictors among practicing clinical nurses working in a tertiary university hospital in Türkiye.
BACKGROUND: Homophobia among healthcare professionals undermines equitable care for sexual minorities and remains underexplored in Türkiye, particularly among practicing nurses. In settings with limited institutional support for sexual minority health, identifying determinants of sexual prejudice among healthcare professionals can inform training needs.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was us

Research into internalised homophobia has uncovered broad links to worse mental health outcomes for sexual minority individuals. However, non-specific measures for different sexual minorities' internalised homophobia limit the impact and specificity of research and psychological interventions. Applying measures made for gay men to lesbian samples, and leaving sexuality-specific nuances as an afterthought, may lead to assumptions that internalised homophobia is invariable across the LGBTQ+ community. In this review, we explain why current frameworks of internalised homophobia are conceptually i

This study explored the relations of gender and adult attachment styles to college students' scores on several measures of authoritarian attitudes (e.g., right-wing authoritarianism, ethnocentrism, homophobia, and religious fundamentalism). A multivariate analysis of authoritarian attitudes yielded significant main and interaction effects involving students' gender and their (categorical) attachment style scores. Relative to women, men reported higher levels of homophobia, ethnocentrism, and right-wing authoritarianism. Gender differences in homophobia were additionally conditioned by particip

OBJECTIVE: Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are at extraordinarily high risk for HIV infection. Given their dual minority identity, they experience multiple forms of social oppression-racism, homophobia, and poverty. This study tested a model for how these forces contribute to their sexual risk behavior.
METHOD: YBMSM (n = 1,289) from 2 Texas cities completed a 1-time assessment of sexual behaviors and psychosocial variables. Structural equation modeling was used to characterize relationships among variables.
RESULTS: Experiences of racism, homophobia, and socioeconomic distress

A sample of 98 Canadian homosexual and bisexual men, 46 of South Asian and 52 of European origin, who had sex with other than an exclusive primary partner were asked about their high-risk sexual behaviours during the previous six months. They were also queried about internalized homophobia, acculturation to the gay community, and for South Asians acculturation to the majority culture. Participants who reported more internalized homophobia were more likely to engage in both high-risk anal and oral sex. South Asian men exhibited significantly greater levels of homophobia. In addition, South Asia

Although sexual minority men experience elevated rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and equal or greater rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization compared to heterosexual individuals, little research has examined mechanisms linking these forms of victimization in this high-need population. We examined general (i.e., emotion regulation difficulties) and sexual minority specific (i.e., internalized homophobia) mediational pathways between CSA and IPV victimization in a longitudinal sample of 940 sexual minority men. Path analyses revealed significant associations between CSA and

Objectives. To create causal loop diagrams that characterize intersectional stigma experiences among Black, gay, bisexual, same gender-loving, and other men who have sex with men and to identify intervention targets to reduce stigma and increase testing and prevention access. Methods. Between January and July 2020, we conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews with 80 expert informants in New York City, which were transcribed, coded, and analyzed. These qualitative insights were developed iteratively, visualized, and validated in a causal loop diagram (CLD) using Vensim software. Results.

In China, despite the improved availability of diagnostic services, men who have sex with men (MSM) still face high HIV risk and barriers to timely diagnosis due to internalized homophobia, self-stigma, and other potential factors. This study aimed to explore these factors and how they associated to late presentation (LP) of HIV among MSM in Chengdu, China. Characteristics of participants were collected by face-to-face interviews, including demographics, sexual behaviors, mental health, HIV knowledge, self-stigma, and internalized homophobia. Baseline CD4 at first presentation was obtained fro

Accounts by 10 Caribbean men who have sex with men living in the UK reveal them to be liminal beings with unstable and unresolved identities. They are between social states: aware they are not heterosexual and not publicly recognised, or in some cases self-accepted, as homosexual. Caribbean-born respondents especially suffer from homophobia, expressing regret and disappointment at their sexuality. They may also experience cognitive dissonance - as they are aware of their conflict with the heteronormative order - they cannot resolve. Religion contributes to homophobia and cognitive dissonance p

OBJECTIVE: This study proposed and tested the first conceptual model of sexual minority specific (discrimination, internalized homophobia) and more general risk factors (perpetrator and partner alcohol use, anger, relationship satisfaction) for intimate partner violence among partnered lesbian women.
METHOD: Self-identified lesbian women (N=1048) were recruited from online market research panels. Participants completed an online survey that included measures of minority stress, anger, alcohol use and alcohol-related problems, relationship satisfaction, psychological aggression, and physical v

Background: Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) face multiple minority stressors (e.g., homophobia, racism, and presumed HIV status) that may indirectly erode their confidence in pursuing HIV testing uptake through exacerbating alcohol use disorder (AUD). Objectives: Using cross-sectional data from 203 community-based BMSM (71.4% as homosexual with a mean age of 26 years) living in a Southern US city, we conducted a causal mediation and moderation analysis to investigate in/direct pathways linking minority stressors, AUD risk, and self-efficacy of HIV testing, including how resilience may m
