Anterograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase in the rat postganglionic sympathetic nerves.

Seven minutes after initiating the experiment, horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled pinocytotic vesicles were observed on the plasma membranes of the postganglionic sympathetic neurons in the left superior cervical ganglia (SCG). HRP reaction product was also demonstrated in the vesicles of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (sER) and multivesicular bodies in the neuronal perikarya. The HRP-positive vesicles of sER and multivesicular bodies were also detected in the adrenergic sympathetic nerve endings in the pineal gland 7 minutes after initiation of the experiment. This suggests that the HRP i

Horseradish peroxidase as a permeability marker in injured rat caudal and iliac arteries.

The permeability to Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) of the rat caudal artery at the level of spontaneous lesions was evaluated by electron microscopy and compared with that of lesions experimentally induced by pinching or internal scraping of the caudal and iliac arteries. No HRP reaction product is observed in the extracellular space of the arterial wall when (i) the internal elastic lamina (IEL) and the endothelium are absent, (ii) the IEL is maintained and the endothelium is absent and (iii) the IEL is absent and the endothelium has regenerated. That HRP does enter the arterial wall in cases o

The origin of the reticulo-olivary projection in the rat: a retrograde horseradish peroxidase study.

Electrophoretic injections of horseradish peroxidase were made in different parts of the rat inferior olivary complex using a ventral approach. Data from these injections provide anatomical evidence for the existence of a projection to the inferior olive which takes origin from reticular nuclei in the brainstem. The majority of reticulo-olivary neurons are located in the nucleus raphe obscurus and nucleus raphe pallidus. Other reticular nuclei which contribute to this projection include the nucleus reticularis ventralis and nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis. Analysis of injections confined

Accessory innervation of mandibular anterior teeth in cats: a horseradish peroxidase study.

In 10 cats, an ipsilateral section of the inferior alveolar nerve was performed following which horseradish peroxidase was deposited in cavity preparations of either ipsicentral incisors (8) or canines (2). The animals were sacrificed in 24 h, and the ipsilateral nerve to mylohyoid and both semilunar ganglia were prepared histochemically for observation. Labeled axons were found in 6 of 8 cats, whose incisors were prepared, and 4 of the 6 had labeled ganglion cells. In the two remaining cats with incisor preparations, no labeled ganglion cells were found; however, labeled axons were found in t

Mannose-specific binding sites for horseradish peroxidase in various cells of the rat.

Mannose-specific binding sites for horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were studied in fixed sections of various tissues by a method reported previously. Liver sinusoidal cells, mast cells of lymph nodes, and alveolar macrophages of the lung and skin fibroblasts were main cell types showing mannose-specific binding of HRP. Macrophages, fibroblasts, and mast cells in the connective tissue of other organs also showed the reaction. However, macrophages of the spleen, and cultured 3T3 cells and L-cells did not give the reaction. The specificities of the binding reaction were studied by determining the ap

An examination of intraspinal sprouting in dorsal root axons with the tracer horseradish peroxidase.

Postdeafferentation reorganization in the central terminal fields of spared dorsal root axons was evaluated by examining the intraspinal distribution of horseradish peroxidase-labeled sciatic nerve afferent fibers at various intervals following the removal of several lumbar dorsal root ganglia. The sciatic projection to the spinal cord, as determined by the pattern and density of intraspinal reaction product, was remarkably stable following the ganglionectomies. For as long as 3 months later, there was no evidence that sciatic afferent fibers had formed anomalous connections either with new sp

The vestibulothalamic projections in the cat studied by retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected or iontophoretically ejected in various thalamic nuclei in 63 adult cats. In 11 other animals HRP was deposited outside the thalamic territory. The number and distribution of labelled cells within the vestibular nuclear complex (VC) were mapped in each case. To a varying degree all subgroups of VC appear to contribute to the vestibulothalamic projections. Such fibres are distributed to several thalamic areas. From the present investigation it appears that generally speaking, there exist three distinct vestibulothalamic pathways with regard to origin as

Horseradish Peroxidase-Mediated Bioprinting via Bioink Gelation by Alternately Extruded Support Material.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated extrusion bioprinting has a significant potential in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, they often face challenges in terms of printing fidelity and structural integrity when using low-viscosity inks. To address this issue, a method that alternately extrudes bioinks and support material was developed in this study. The bioinks consisting of cells, HRP, and phenolated polymers, and the support material contained hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The support material not only prevented the collapse of the constructs but also supplied H2O2 to faci

Immobilized horseradish peroxidase hybrid biocatalysts for degradation of pharmaceuticals and other emerging micropollutants.

With the increasing detection of emerging pollutants (EPs), such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and pesticides, in water bodies, there is a growing research priority to develop efficient methods for their degradation. In the present study, the degradation of 21 EPs from different classes was investigated using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) covalently immobilized onto two photocatalytic supports, TiO2 and ZnO. The hybrid biocatalysts (TiO2-HRP and ZnO-HRP) were used to degrade EPs with and without the presence of a redox mediator, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBT). The results revealed

Enhanced chemiluminescence of CdTe quantum dots-H₂O₂ by horseradish peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme.

In this study, it was found that horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mimicking DNAzyme could effectively enhance the CL emission of CdTe quantum dots (QDs)-H2O2 system, whereas HRP could not enhance the CL intensity. The CL enhancement mechanism was investigated, and the CL enhancement was supposed to originate from the catalysis of HRP-mimicking DNAzyme on the CL reaction between CdTe QDs and H2O2. Meantime, compared with CdTe QDs-H2O2 CL system, H2O2 concentration was markedly decreased in QDs-H2O2-HRP-mimicking DNAzyme CL system, improving the stability of QDs-H2O2 CL system. The QDs-based CL syst

Uptake sites of horseradish peroxidase after injection into peritoneal structures: defining some pitfalls.

Following injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) either into the jejunal wall or the peritoneal cavity, neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, celiac, nodose and spinal ganglia, and ventral and lateral horns of the spinal cord from the mid-thoracic to lumbar segments were labeled. When HRP was injected into the wall of the exteriorized gut, neurons of the spinal cord were not labeled. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in the number of labeled neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus and ganglia examined. These results indicate that HRP injected into the intestinal wa

Subdural compartment in pig: a morphologic study with blood and horseradish peroxidase infused subdurally.

The dura-arachnoid junction is examined in normal animals and in animals subjected to subdural infusion of blood immediately prior to death, simulating acute subdural hemorrhages. The Norwegian landrace pig is used as the experimental animal. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been added to the injected blood to serve as a macromolecular tracer. The material is studied by light and electron microscopy. Special attention is given to the level of the induced subdural cleavage plane, the total distribution of the infused blood, and the natural sites of drainage. The dura-arachnoid junction, identif

Uptake of horseradish peroxidase by the middle ear mucosa in experimentally induced otitis media.

Electron microscopy was used to study the characteristics of uptake of the protein tracer, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), by the middle ear mucosa of chinchillas. Two types of experimental otitis media were used: serous otitis media (SOM) produced by eustachian tube obstruction and purulent otitis media (POM) produced by inoculation of Streptococcus pneumoniae type 7F. HRP was placed in each tympanic bulla for either 1 min or 10 min. In the 1-min installation of HRP, the degree of HRP uptake was higher in SOM and POM animals than in control animals. Following the 10-min installation of HRP, the

Central projections of the ethmoidal nerve of the cat as determined by the horseradish peroxidase tracer technique.

The ethmoidal nerve innervates the nasal mucosa and constitutes the afferent limb of several upper airway protective reflexes. Protective reflexes, such as sneezing, coughing, and apnea, are those reflexes that either expel foreign substances from the respiratory tract or stop them from gaining access to the lungs. The afferents for nasal receptors are thought to be a part of the trigeminal system rather than olfactory in nature. The objective of this study was to localize the cell bodies of these ethmoidal afferents and to trace the central projections of these neurons. Horseradish peroxidase

Afferents to the flocculus of the cerebellum in the rhesus macaque as revealed by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

To investigate the afferent projections to the flocculus in a nonhuman primate, we injected horseradish peroxidase into one flocculus of six rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and processed their brains according to the tetramethylbenzidine protocol to reveal retrogradely labeled neurons. Labeled neurons were found in a large set of nuclei within the rostral medulla and the pons. The greatest numbers of labeled neurons were in the vestibular complex and the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi. There were neurons labeled bilaterally throughout all the vestibular nuclei except the lateral vestibular nuc

Kinetics of respiratory tract absorption and plasma clearance of horseradish peroxidase in guinea pigs.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) absorption across the wall of the upper airway, monitored by the amount detected in the blood, is used to measure epithelial damage by toxins. Full details of kinetics of absorption and blood clearance have not been reported previously. We measured the kinetics under the experimental conditions used in testing toxins. HRP was administered to guinea pigs either by intraarterial injection of a 7.5 microgram bolus (plasma clearance) or by intratracheal instillation of 1 mg (respiratory tract absorption). Plasma concentrations were monitored for 60 min. Plasma concentr

A horseradish peroxidase procedure for tracing the central projections of peripheral nerves in exsanguinated anamniotes.

This report outlines a procedure for demonstrating the central connections of peripheral nerves in anamniotes by exposing the nerves to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) subsequent to perfusion of the animal with cold saline. The tissue is fixed by immersion after a 6-10 h exposure to the HRP, embedded, sectioned and finally reacted using tetramethylbenzidine as a chromogen. The pattern of afferent projections of the posterior lateral line nerve in the teleost fish Crenicichla as demonstrated by this 'pre-perfused' technique is very similar to the pattern seen when using a standard HRP procedure re
