New challenges in horticultural IPM: artificial intelligence can enhance the use of biocontrol agents.

Modern horticulture faces the dual imperatives of increasing global food production while mitigating the severe environmental and health impacts of conventional chemical pesticides. Biological control agents (BCAs), which utilize beneficial microorganisms, macroorganisms, semiochemical and botanicals to suppress pathogens, represent a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture but have been historically constrained by inconsistent field performance, high specificity, and slow action. Concurrently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force in agriculture, offering a powerfu

Recent Trends in Small Molecule Gases for Maintaining the Postharvest Quality of Horticultural Products: A Review.

Most horticultural products are highly perishable, which seriously affects their shelf life and postharvest quality. Thus, there is an urgent demand for innovative preservation techniques to reduce postharvest losses. In recent years, small-molecule gases small-molecule gases have been found to be involved in regulating the postharvest quality of horticultural products. These compounds include nitric oxide (NO), ethylene (ETH), hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This review discusses the functions and mechanisms of s

The power of magnesium: unlocking the potential for increased yield, quality, and stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is pivotal for the vitality, yield, and quality of horticultural crops. Central to plant physiology, Mg2+ powers photosynthesis as an integral component of chlorophyll, bolstering growth and biomass accumulation. Beyond basic growth, it critically affects crop quality factors, from chlorophyll synthesis to taste, texture, and shelf life. However, Mg2 + deficiency can cripple yields and impede plant development. Magnesium Transporters (MGTs) orchestrate Mg2+ dynamics, with notable variations observed in horticultural species such as Cucumis sativus, Citrullus lanatus, and Citru

Population diversity analyses provide insights into key horticultural traits of Chinese native thymes.

Chinese native thymes (CNTs) in the genus Thymus (family Lamiaceae) are rich in bioactive terpenes, which exert antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidation, immunological, and antimicrobial effects. Plants exhibit morphological variation, including erect-type and creeping-type growth forms; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying important horticultural traits have not been determined. Here, we collected 39 CNTs providing strategic plant resources for studies of lignin, terpenoids, and glandular trichomes of thymes. Using resequencing data as well as phenotypic, metabonomic, phylogenetic,

UVR8-mediated UV-B signaling and its regulation of horticultural traits: from Arabidopsis to application.

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-315 nm) radiation acts as a key environmental signal that regulates plant development and acclimation responses. The UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8) plays a central role in perceiving and transducing these signals. In the absence of UV-B, UVR8 exists predominantly as a homodimer in the cytoplasm. Upon UV-B absorption, UVR8 dissociates into active monomers that translocate to the nucleus, where they initiate downstream signaling via interactions with core regulatory components. In this review, we systematically elaborate on the UVR8-mediated UV-B signal

Roles of nitric oxide in improving post-harvest horticultural product quality: Crosstalk with hydrogen sulfide.

Postharvest quality maintenance is a key research focus in horticultural science. Nitric oxide (NO), a vital gaseous signaling molecule, significantly improves postharvest quality by inhibiting ethylene (ETH) synthesis, reducing respiration rate, enhancing antioxidant enzyme systems, maintaining cell wall integrity, and regulating secondary metabolism. Currently, the synergistic mechanisms between NO and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have emerged as a research hotspot. The two molecules work in concert to delay postharvest senescence and enhance fruit resistance to low temperature and pathogens invol

An environment-guided visual-temporal deep learning framework for early disease detection in greenhouse horticultural crops.

INTRODUCTION: In protected horticultural production, early disease identification and precise intervention are critical for safeguarding crop yield and quality while reducing chemical pesticide inputs. However, early-stage greenhouse diseases often exhibit extremely subtle visual symptoms, and their occurrence and progression are highly dependent on environmental condition variations, making stable and reliable early warning difficult to achieve using conventional methods based on single visual information or simple multimodal fusion. METHODS: To address this challenge, a visual-environment j
