Motor Vehicle Crash and Hospital Charges in Front- and Rear-Seated Restrained and Unrestrained Adult Motor Vehicle Occupants.

UNLABELLED: There are reports that historically higher mortality observed for front- compared to rear-seated adult motor vehicle (MV) occupants has narrowed. Vast improvements have been made in strengthening laws and restraint use in front-, but not rear-seated occupants suggesting there may be value in expanding the science on rear-seat safety. METHODS: A linked 2016-2017 hospital and MV crash data set, the Crash Outcomes Data Evaluation System (CODES), was used to compare characteristics of front-seated (n = 115,939) and rear-seated (n = 5729) adults aged 18 years and older involved in a MV

National trends of incidence, treatment, and hospital charges of isolated C-2 fractures in three different age groups.

OBJECT: Incidence of C-2 fracture is increasing in elderly patients. Patient age also influences decision making in the management of these fractures. There are very limited data on the national trends of incidence, treatment interventions, and resource utilization in patients in different age groups with isolated C-2 fractures. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence, treatment, complications, length of stay, and hospital charges of isolated C-2 fracture in patients in 3 different age groups by using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. METHODS: The data were obtaine

The impact of urban health insurance reform on hospital charges: a case study from two cities in China.

During the transition from a centrally planned to a market economy, China's urban health insurance system is being reformed. The control of the rapidly increasing hospital expenses will be a major determinant of the success of the reform. This study aims to examine the impact of the reform on hospital charges by comparing changes between two cities with different insurance systems and identifying determinants for those changes. Data was collected from six hospitals in two cities, one city implemented an urban health insurance reform, the other did not. Acute appendicitis and normal childbirth

Comparing surgical readmission, in-hospital complications, and charges between total hip arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty for geriatric femoral neck fractures.

AIMS: For displaced femoral neck fractures (FNFs) in geriatric patients, there remains uncertainty regarding the effect of total hip arthroplasty (THA) compared with hemiarthroplasty (HA) in the guidelines. We aimed to compare 90-day surgical readmission, in-hospital complications, and charges between THA and HA in these patients. METHODS: The Hospital Quality Monitoring System was queried from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2019 for displaced FNFs in geriatric patients treated with THA or HA. After propensity score matching, which identified 33,849 paired patients, outcomes were compared betw

Variation in hospital charges in patients with external ventricular drains: comparison between the intensive care and surgical floor settings.

OBJECTIVE: Placement of an external ventricular drain (EVD) is a common and potentially life-saving neurosurgical procedure, but the economic aspect of EVD management and the relationship to medical expenditure remain poorly studied. Similarly, interinstitutional practice patterns vary significantly. Whereas some institutions require that patients with EVDs be monitored strictly within the intensive care unit (ICU), other institutions opt primarily for management of EVDs on the surgical floor. Therefore, an ICU burden for patients with EVDs may increase a patient's costs of hospitalization. Th

Total shoulder arthroplasty for proximal humerus fracture is associated with increased hospital charges despite a shorter length of stay.

BACKGROUND: Operation choice is a complex decision in the surgical management of proximal humerus fractures. Recently, there has been an increase in the use of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) for complex fracture patterns. HYPOTHESIS: Patients with proximal humerus fractures who receive TSA are more likely to have higher hospital charges and a prolonged length of stay relative to patients receiving hemiarthroplasty (HA), open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) or closed reduction with internal fixation (CRIF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A statewide electronic database was used to identify

The Use of Pediatric Ventricular Assist Devices in Children's Hospitals From 2000 to 2010: Morbidity, Mortality, and Hospital Charges.

OBJECTIVE: The use of ventricular assist devices has increased dramatically in adult heart failure patients. However, the overall use, outcome, comorbidities, and resource utilization of ventricular assist devices in pediatric patients have not been well described. We sought to demonstrate that the use of ventricular assist devices in pediatric patients has increased over time and that mortality has decreased. DESIGN: A retrospective study of the Pediatric Health Information System database was performed for patients 20 years old or younger undergoing ventricular assist device placement from

Reduced time to imaging, length of stay, and hospital charges following implementation of a novel postoperative pathway for craniotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The authors created a postoperative postanesthesia care unit (PACU) pathway to bypass routine intensive care unit (ICU) admissions of patients undergoing routine craniotomies, to improve ICU resource utilization and reduce overall hospital costs and lengths of stay while maintaining quality of care and patient satisfaction. In the present study, the authors evaluated this novel PACU-to-floor clinical pathway for a subset of patients undergoing craniotomy with a case time under 5 hours and blood loss under 500 ml. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective cohort study was performe

Changes in motorcycle-related head injury deaths, hospitalizations, and hospital charges following repeal of Pennsylvania's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

To evaluate the 2003 repeal of Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law, we assessed changes in helmet use and compared motorcycle-related head injuries with non-head injuries from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005. Helmet use among riders in crashes decreased from 82% to 58%. Head injury deaths increased 66%; nonhead injury deaths increased 25%. Motorcycle-related head injury hospitalizations increased 78% compared with 28% for nonhead injury hospitalizations. Helmet law repeals jeopardize motorcycle riders. Until repeals are reversed, states need voluntary strategies to increase helmet use.

Predicting hospital charge and length of stay for congenital heart disease surgery.

Three hundred twenty-two consecutive operations between December 1985 and December 1989 for 10 types of low-risk congenital cardiac malformations were reviewed to determine the hospital charge and postoperative length of stay. Multiple regression analysis of variance was used to predict the influence of the primary diagnosis and various preoperative parameters. The average hospital charge was $27,262 +/- $20,644 and the postoperative length of stay was 9.3 +/- 8.3 days. Age at operation alone did not influence the dependent variables. The diagnosis of atrial septal defect (p = 0.002) or coarct

Inpatient Hospitalization Charges for Children With Birth Defects in Texas, 2021-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Children with birth defects often require complex medical care, contributing to increased healthcare costs. Understanding the economic burden of birth defects is important for resource planning, but recent Texas-specific data are lacking. METHODS: A retrospective data analysis was conducted using the Texas Hospital Inpatient Discharge Public Use Data File (PUDF) for all pediatric discharges (ages 0-17 years) documented between 2021 and 2023. We identified hospitalizations with birth defects based on the presence of an ICD-10 code (Q00-Q99) in any of the 26 diagnosis code fields.

Nationwide Readmission Rates and Hospital Charges for Patients With Surgical Evacuation of Nontraumatic Subdural Hematomas: Part 2-Burr Hole Craniostomy.

BACKGROUND: Nontraumatic subdural hematoma (SDH) is a common neurological disease that causes extensive morbidity and mortality. Craniotomy or burr hole craniostomy (BHC) is indicated for symptomatic lesions, but both are associated with high recurrence rates. Although extensive research exists on postoperative complications after BHCs, few studies have examined the underlying causes and predictors of unplanned 30-day hospital readmissions at the national level. OBJECTIVE: To compare causes for hospital readmission within 30 days after surgical SDH evacuation with BHC and evaluate readmission

Hospital and ED charges for spina bifida care in the United States between 2006 and 2014: Over $2 billion annually.

BACKGROUND: More children with spina bifida (SB) are surviving into adulthood. Unfortunately, little data exist regarding the economic implications of modern SB care. OBJECTIVE: We examined economic data from two national databases to estimate the annual nationwide hospital and emergency charges of SB from 2006-14. METHODS: We analyzed the 2006-2014 Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS). SB patients were defined using ICD-9-CM codes. Trends and predictors of hospital charges in liver and pancreatic surgery: A comparative analysis of open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive hepatic and pancreatic surgery remain underutilized, partly due to perceived higher costs. This study compared hospital charges among patients undergoing hepatic and pancreatic resection via open, laparoscopic, or robotic approaches. METHODS: Adult patients undergoing elective hepatic or pancreatic resections were identified from the Nationwide Readmissions Database (2016-2020). Data were stratified by surgical approach into open, laparoscopic, and robotic. Data were compared relative to baseline characteristics and outcomes. Multivariable quantile regression as
