New IEEE standard enables data collection for medical applications.

The IEEE has gone to ballot on a "Standard for Medical Device Communications", IEEE P1073. The lower layer, hardware portions of the standard are expected to be approved by the IEEE Standards Board at their December 11-13, 1994 meeting. Other portions of the standard are in the initial stages of the IEEE ballot process. The intent of the standard is to allow hospitals and other users to interface medical electronic devices to host computer systems in a standard, interchangeable manner. The standard is optimized for acute care environments such as ICU's, operating rooms, and emergency rooms. [1

An ontology-based nurse call management system (oNCS) with probabilistic priority assessment.

BACKGROUND: The current, place-oriented nurse call systems are very static. A patient can only make calls with a button which is fixed to a wall of a room. Moreover, the system does not take into account various factors specific to a situation. In the future, there will be an evolution to a mobile button for each patient so that they can walk around freely and still make calls. The system would become person-oriented and the available context information should be taken into account to assign the correct nurse to a call. The aim of this research is (1) the design of a software platform that sup

Doctor-child communication and caregivers' willingness to recommend hospital: a secondary analysis using pediatric patient experience data.

BACKGROUND: Doctor-child communication is central to pediatric care, yet current research often marginalizes child-centered interactions and fails to isolate which specific behaviors drive systemic hospital metrics. This study addresses these gaps by using The Child Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (Child HCAHPS) framework to deconstruct communication into three discrete behaviors. We aimed to assess their distinct effects on caregivers' overall hospital rating and willingness to recommend, thereby clarifying the link between triadic clinical interactions and in

Electronic Referrals and Digital Imaging Systems in Ophthalmology: A Global Perspective.

Ophthalmology departments face intensifying pressure to expedite sight-saving treatments and reduce the global burden of disease. The use of electronic communication systems, digital imaging, and redesigned service care models is imperative for addressing such demands. The recently developed Scottish Eyecare Integration Project involves an electronic referral system from community optometry to the hospital ophthalmology department using National Health Service (NHS) email with digital ophthalmic images attached, via a virtual private network connection. The benefits over the previous system in

Communication dynamics in the care of preterm infants: a multi-level qualitative study from a high-burden district in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains a major contributor to infant mortality and long-term morbidity globally, with disproportionate burdens in low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia. Global maternal and newborn health agendas increasingly promote continuity of care, family-centred approaches, and behaviour-informed communication across levels of service delivery. However, how globally endorsed principles are translated into routine communication during hospital-to-home transitions is shaped by local health systems, provider capacity, and household contexts, and remains insufficien

Healthcare access and care experiences among adults aged 80 years and older: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is increasing worldwide, and adults aged 80 years and older represent a growing group with complex healthcare needs. Although healthcare access among older adults has been widely discussed, qualitative evidence focusing specifically on the experiences of adults aged 80 years and older remains relatively limited. This study aimed to explore healthcare access and care experiences among adults aged 80 years and older attending a Healthy Aging Center within a university-affiliated tertiary care hospital in Türkiye. METHODS: This qualitative study included adults aged

Association between hospital admissions and healthcare provider communication for individuals with sickle cell disease.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that caregivers' or adult participants' low ratings of provider communication are associated with more hospital admissions among adults and children with sickle cell disease (SCD), respectively. Secondarily, we determined whether there was an association between the caregivers' or participants' health literacy and rating of providers' communication. Methods: Primary data were collected from participants through surveys between 2014 and 2016, across six sickle cell centers throughout the U.S. In this cross-sectional cohort study, 211 adults with SCD and 331 car

[10 years of emergency medical care at the traumatology center of the university clinic in Essen].

10 years of experience with emergency treatment at a University Center sufficiently proved the necessity of an emergency physician at the site of the accident. Because of its inefficiency, the separate and individual displacement of the doctor and the emergency vehicle to the site of the accident has been abandoned in 1976. The professional qualifications of the emergency team are as important as the technical equipment. Specific attention has to be paid to the education of nursing -, ambulance personnel and doctors belonging to the team. Very early and efficient shock therapy is essential in

Latent Safety Threats During Simulated Internal Mass Casualty Incidents: A Multicenter Simulation-Based Systems Testing Study.

INTRODUCTION: Internal mass casualty incidents (MCIs) challenge hospital systems by requiring rapid coordination across clinical, operational, and communication domains. Simulation-based clinical systems testing (SbCST) can identify latent safety threats (LSTs), but cross-institutional patterns in internal MCI preparedness remain poorly characterized. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter simulation-based systems assessment using in situ SbCST and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) during simulated internal MCIs. LSTs were identified through triangulation of structured field observations

Principles and Practices of Establishing a Hospital-Based Ebola Treatment Unit.

Outbreaks of Ebola virus disease and high-risk transmissible infections are increasing and pose threats to health care workers and global health systems. Previous outbreaks offer lessons for health system preparedness and response, including establishment of hospital-based high-risk pathogen treatment units. Their creation demands early preparation and interprofessional coordination; infection prevention and control; case management training; prepositioning of supplies; conversion of existing structures to treatment units; and strengthening communication and research platforms. Hospital-based

Clinical Communication Response Latency as an Operational Efficiency and Patient Safety Indicator in Acute Care Hospitals.

OBJECTIVES: Timely clinical communication is a core safety function in acute care, yet response latency remains poorly measured. This study treats it as a stratified safety indicator and introduces a dual-phase model distinguishing verbal triage (T₀verbal) from physical intervention (T₀physical). METHODS: A mixed-methods observational design evaluated nurse call response latency across 3 anonymised hospitals: Hospital A (public, no-voice), Hospital B (private, no-voice), and Hospital C (private, voice-enabled). Voice-enabled systems provide 2-way audio between the patient and the nurse before

Development of a portable information system: connecting palmtop computers with medical records systems and clinical reference resources.

The portability of palmtop computers makes them an ideal platform to maintain communication between busy physicians and medical information systems. In our academic FHC (Family Health Center) we have developed software that runs on a palmtop computer allowing access to information in the HIS (Hospital Information System) and our FHC's AAMRS (Automated Ambulatory Medical Record System). The resident physicians who staff the hospital and the FHC are frequently at home or otherwise off-site where terminal access is not available. Using a Hewlett-Packard 95LX palmtop computer as the base platform,
