Hospital Inpatient Costs for Single Ventricle Patients Surviving the Fontan Procedure.

We estimated the inpatient resource use for a Fontan patient from birth to adulthood and explored factors that might induce cost differences (2014 US dollar). Inpatient costing records from 4 hospitals with greatest numbers of Fontan patients in Australia and New Zealand were linked with the Fontan registry database. Inpatient records between July 1995 and September 2014 for 420 Fontan patients were linked, and the most frequent primary diagnoses were hypoplastic left heart syndrome (20.7%), tricuspid atresia (19.7%), and double inlet left ventricle (17.1%). The mean hospital cost for a Fontan

Temporal changes in hospital costs for left ventricular assist device implantation.

BACKGROUND: A recent prospective, randomized controlled trial demonstrated that a continuous-flow (CF) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) resulted in improved survival at 12 and 24 months compared to a pulsatile-flow (PF) device. The current study examines the hospitalization costs associated with treatment of New York Heart Failure Class IV patients when implanted with a CF LVAD and compares them to previously reported costs of a PF LVAD in the same population. METHODS: Hospital billing data were analyzed for CF LVAD patients in the HeartMate II Destination Therapy trial to determine cost

The cost of preventing stigma by hospitalizing soldiers in a general hospital instead of a psychiatric hospital.

Hospitalization costs are lower in psychiatric hospitals than in psychiatric departments of general hospitals. However, soldiers hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals are subject to the stigma associated with mental illness. The goal of this study was to examine the financial costs of preventing such stigma by hospitalizing soldiers in psychiatric departments of general hospitals, rather than less expensive psychiatric hospitals. Another goal was to find ways to reduce hospitalization costs, taking into consideration the consequences of the stigma for patients and their families. Costs, medica

Identifying High-Cost RSV Hospitalizations at a Secondary Hospital in Japan.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of hospitalization in infants and young children worldwide. Although most RSV hospitalizations occur at secondary hospitals, information on RSV-related healthcare costs in these settings is limited. A retrospective analysis of RSV-related hospitalizations was conducted at Saitama City Hospital, a secondary hospital, between April 2018 and May 2024. Patients with laboratory-confirmed RSV infection were included. The study period was divided into three phases based on revisions of the national medical reimbursement schedule. Hospitalization co

Association of Costs and Days at Home With Transfer Hospital in Home.

IMPORTANCE: New Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services waivers created a payment mechanism for hospital at home services. Although it is well established that direct admission to hospital at home from the community as a substitute for hospital care provides superior outcomes and lower cost, the effectiveness of transfer hospital at home-that is, completing hospitalization at home-is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of the transfer component of a Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Home program (T-HIH), taking advantage of natural geographical limitations in a program's service are
