Developing a hospital response plan for mass casualties in traumatic incidents: A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) are events in which a significant number of individuals sustain injuries, overwhelming the capacity and capabilities of local medical facilities and healthcare centers. Preparedness, along with a well-defined operational and execution plan for managing mass casualties in hospitals, is critical during disasters and emergencies. The absence of such a plan leads to an ineffective response to the incident and a worsening of the conditions in the hospital. This research aims to develop a response plan for managing these incidents in the hospital. MCIs occu

Comparison of 30-day planned and unplanned readmissions in a tertiary teaching hospital in China.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the clinical characteristics of patients with 30-day planned and unplanned readmissions and to identify patients at high risk for unplanned readmissions. This will facilitate a better understanding of these readmissions and improve and optimize resource utilization for this patient population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort descriptive study was conducted at the West China Hospital (WCH), Sichuan University from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020. Discharged patients (≥ 18 years old) were divided into unplanned readmission and

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in outcomes between planned home births, occurring at home or in hospital, and planned hospital births. DESIGN AND SETTING: Population-based study using South Australian perinatal data on all births and perinatal deaths during the period 1991-2006. Analysis included logistic regression adjusted for predictor variables and standardised perinatal mortality ratios. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perinatal death, intrapartum death, death attributed to intrapartum asphyxia, Apgar score < 7 at 5 minutes, use of specialised neonatal care, operative delivery, perineal injur

Outcomes of planned home births and planned hospital births in low-risk women in Norway between 1990 and 2007: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The safety of planned home births remains controversial in Western countries. The aim of the present study was to compare outcomes in women who planned, and were selected to, home birth at the onset of labor with women who planned for a hospital birth. METHODS: Data from 1631 planned home births between 1990 and 2007 were compared with a random sample of 16,310 low-risk women with planned hospital births. The primary outcomes were intrapartum intervention rates and complications. Secondary outcomes were perinatal and neonatal death rates. RESULTS: Primiparas who planned home birt

Tabletop Exercise for Training and Improving Business Continuity Plan Development in Hospital Pharmacies.

OBJECTIVES: While tabletop exercises (TTX) are frequently used for disaster preparedness, their value for strengthening hospital pharmacies' (HPs) business continuity plans (BCPs) remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the impact of a TTX on the quality of HPs' BCPs and on links between BCPs and crisis response training. METHODS: Swiss HPs' BCPs were evaluated with a grid scoring 48 items (5-point Likert scale; 1 = "not at all sufficient" to 5 = "excellent"; 3 = minimal satisfactory expectation). Baseline BCP assessments were followed by a TTX simulating a blackout. A hot debriefing im

A feasibility trial of advance care planning for patients with terminal cancer in primary hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of advance care planning (ACP) on patients with terminal cancer in primary hospitals. METHODS: Convenience sampling was used to select 60 patients with terminal cancer and their primary caregivers from primary hospitals. The control group received routine care, while the intervention group received routine care plus an ACP-based care intervention. Patients and their primary caregivers' anxiety and depression levels were assessed before and after the intervention. We compared several outcomes between the ACP intervention and routine care control group, inc

A Lean-based Digital Twin model for planning and governance in secondary and tertiary hospital networks.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems face growing pressure and recurrent capacity-demand imbalances across hospital networks. While Lean Healthcare improves patient flow, most implementations remain confined to departmental silos and individual facilities. Simultaneously, Digital Twin (DT) applications in healthcare predominantly focus on precision medicine or isolated unit optimization, leaving a gap in system-level resource management. This study aims to propose a Lean-grounded DT model to support integrated activity and capacity planning across multi-provider hospital networks. METHODS: Situated

Orthognathic surgical planning using graph CNN with dual embedding module: External validations with multi-hospital datasets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite recent development of AI, prediction of the surgical movement in the maxilla and mandible by OGS might be more difficult than that of tooth movement by orthodontic treatment. Optimizing discharge planning: predictors of prolonged hospital length of stay after isolated femoral shaft fracture fixation.

PURPOSE: Length of hospital stay (LOS) is a critical metric in orthopedic care. While factors influencing LOS in hip fractures are known, research on isolated femoral shaft fractures is limited. This study’s main purpose was to identify the demographic, clinical, and treatment-related factors that prolong LOS specifically in this patient population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 551 patients treated for isolated diaphyseal femur fractures (OTA/AO 32 A–C). Multiple imputation (25 iterations) was utilized to address missingness in 16.3% of the sample, resulting in a fina

Contraceptive use and unmet need for family planning among HIV-positive women: A hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: For women living with HIV who do not want to become pregnant or who wish to delay pregnancy, contraception has the added public health benefit of reducing the number of infants who might acquire HIV. The unmet need for contraception must be addressed to prevent unintended pregnancies among HIV-positive women and consequently mother-to-child transmission of HIV. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the contraceptive usage and its various determinants and to find out the unmet need for family planning among HIV-positive women. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional

Factors determining the choice of contraceptive methods at the Family Planning Clinic, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

In a study of 2000 women volunteers seeking contraceptive services at the Family Planning Clinic (FPC), University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, 66.2 per cent chose the intrauterine device (IUD) making it the most common method of contraception. Factors influencing choice of contraceptive methods were advice from friends and family members, intended duration of use and information from the media. Ignorance, fear and unfounded cultural beliefs were factors responsible for the delay in seeking contraceptive advice. The mass media was an important source of information for most of the women.

Implementing a Portable, Simulation-Based Trauma Curriculum for Rural Hospitals: Planning Pilot Year.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma patients receiving care in rural settings face higher mortality rates than those at tertiary referral centers. Rural hospitals experience significant gaps in trauma care from limited access to specialists, procedural training, and standardized team-based education. In Georgia, over 20% of trauma patients come from rural areas where high-fidelity trauma training is limited. To address these disparities, we developed a trauma simulation curriculum for rural Georgia trauma providers. METHODS: A mixed-methods needs assessment was conducted to identify training needs reported
