A total of 98 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients were asked for their daily consumption of coffee, tea and other products containing caffeine. Calculation of the corresponding daily caffeine intake was performed using data from the literature and from caffeine measurements carried out in different coffee and tea preparations in the hospital. A descriptive study on psychiatric inpatients of a general hospital was conducted. During a four-year- and -ten-month period, 1390 hospitalization admissions were analysed. Among them, 436 (31.4%) were diagnosed as mood disorder, 431 (31.0%) were schizophrenia, followed by other psychosis (231 admissions, 16.6%), organic mental disorder (164 admissions, 11.8%), neurosis (116 admissions, 8.3%) and other mental disorders (12 admissions, 0.9%). Liver biopsy was analysed for 41 alcoholics, satisfying RDC criteria. Alcoholic liver disease was diagnosed as per the guidelines from the WHO/ICMR Workshop. For the entire group mean consumption of alcohol was 183.lg. of ethanol for an average of 9.7 years. Only 5 persons (12.2%) had normal liver. Psychiatric disorder has been considered to have seasonal variation for a long time. The studies to date have suffered frequently from small samples and imprecise terminology, and the results have been inconclusive. A cyclical model of violence to psychiatric nurses is proposed in this paper and a partial test of the model is reported. The model suggests that stress induced by exposure to violence leads to impaired staff performance and adoption of behaviours which make the re-occurrence of violence more likely. We surveyed 222 nurses, nursing assistants, and clerks at a psychiatric hospital in Taiwan on responses to workplace violence, treatment of violent patients, and reporting behavior.
