Nursing and Chaplain Partnership for Pain Management: A Survey of Nurses.

PURPOSE: Pain is a universal experience for hospitalized patients, with physical, psychological, spiritual, and cognitive implications. As hospitals seek to identify nonpharmaceutical options for managing acute pain, the role of chaplains has been overlooked. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of nurses regarding chaplain involvement in pain management. METHODS: A survey was distributed to nurses to determine if they would request spiritual care services in various patient and family scenarios. Respondents were dichotomized into two groups based on self-report of whethe

Families' stressors and needs at time of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation: a Jordanian perspective.

BACKGROUND: During cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, family members, in some hospitals, are usually pushed to stay out of the resuscitation room. However, growing literature implies that family presence during resuscitation could be beneficial. Previous literature shows controversial belief whether or not a family member should be present during resuscitation of their relative. Some worldwide association such as the American Heart Association supports family-witnessed resuscitation and urge hospitals to develop policies to ease this process. The opinions on family-witnessed resuscitation vary wi

Religion and psychosis: the effects of the Welsh religious revival in 1904-1905.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic symptoms have been linked to religious experience, but empirical evidence is scarce. We have investigated the impact of the Welsh religious revival (RR) of 1904-1905 on the number of admissions to the regional psychiatric hospital, their diagnostic features and lifelong course. METHOD: All case-notes of patients admitted to the North Wales Hospital between 1902 and 1907 were included. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in admissions for brief polymorphic psychoses (BPP; ICD-10: F23.0 and F23.1) in the revival years, but the number of first admissions for other me

Credentialing the clinical ethics consultant: an academic medical center affirms professionalism and practice.

In response to national trends calling for increasing accountability and an emerging dialogue within bioethics, we describe an effort to credential clinical ethicists at a major academic medical center. This effort is placed within the historical context of prior calls for credentialing and certification and efforts currently underway within organized bioethics to engage this issue. The specific details, and conceptual rationale, behind the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's graduated credentialing plan are shared as is their evolution and ratification within the context of institutional policy. Trends in neonatal exchange transfusions at Yodogawa Christian Hospital.

A review was conducted to determine the trends in exchange transfusion (ET) of newborn infants at the Yodogawa Christian Hospital during the past 18 years. At that hospital in 1957, the first ET was performed on a term infant with severe hemolytic jaundice caused by rhesus factor (Rh) incompatibility. By 1989, ET had been performed in more than 1400 newborn infants. These cases of newborns who had had ET were retrospectively reviewed, with a focus on every 3 year period from 1974 to 1992. The total number of infants requiring ET noticeably decreased from 68 cases (14.0% of total admissions) in

Fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation: Religious identity matters.

INTRODUCTION: Religion is a salient aspect of patient background in treatment (The psychology of religion and coping: Theory, research, practice; Guilford Press). However, research investigating the role of religion in suicide is lacking and inconsistent (Journal of Religion and Health, 57, 2478-2499). The current study (1) clarifies the association between religious identity and fearlessness about death in a psychiatric sample and (2) tests whether religious identity moderates the association between fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation. METHODS: Participants were 155 patients seek

Religious coping in patients with severe substance use disorders receiving acute inpatient detoxification.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Religious coping, one of the most widely studied components of spirituality among psychiatric populations, has rarely been addressed in patients with severe substance use disorders (SUD). The aim of our study was to elucidate whether religious coping is related to symptom expression and mutual-help participation. METHODS: Self-reported religious coping was assessed in individuals sequentially admitted to a private psychiatric hospital for inpatient detoxification. Target symptoms of SUD included severity of substance use prior to admission and craving during detoxif

This study aimed to explore the beliefs and attitudes underlying treatment refusal among OC patients in Pakistan. METHODS: We conducted a theory-informed qualitative case study guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM) using purposive criterion sampling. Semistructured interviews were conducted with eight OC patients who refused hospital-based treatment, eight family members involved in decision-making, and three oral su

Barriers to abortion provision: A qualitative study among medical students and gynecologists in Berlin, Germany.

OBJECTIVES: While abortion is a common medical procedure in Germany, the number of abortion-providing facilities declined by 46% between 2003 and 2022. As existing data do not paint a complete picture of the factors influencing this decline, an understanding into the perspectives of health care professionals (HCPs) is necessary. We set out to examine attitudes of HCPs in Berlin, Germany toward different aspects of abortion to identify barriers that might prevent them from providing abortions. STUDY DESIGN: We used a qualitative research design consisting of in-depth semistructured one-on-one

Eliminating facility-acquired pressure ulcers at Ascension Health.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, as part of Ascension Health's "Healthcare That Is Safe" initiative, St. Vincent's Medical Center, as an alpha site, was charged with defining best practices to eliminate facility-acquired pressure ulcers. A comprehensive plan, including the "SKIN" (Surfaces, Keep the patients turning, Incontinence management, Nutrition) bundle, was developed. RESULTS: The incidence of pressure ulcers decreased from > 2% to < 1% from December 2004 through February 2006. No new Stage III or IV facility-acquired pressure ulcers occurred between August 2004 and February 2006. Weekly SKIN oper

Converging knowledges in the maternity ward in Ghana: an ethnographic study of care for women with pre-eclampsia.

Efforts to improve maternal health rely heavily on biomedicine. Anthropologists, often US-based, have critiqued biomedicine for being 'authoritative knowledge' that shifts power from women to medical experts, and colonises and de-values other birth traditions. However, this ethnographic study of care for pre-eclampsia patients in Ghanaian hospitals shows how embodied, religious, and Indigenous knowledges co-shape biomedical care. Through a form of health care bricolage, health practitioners negotiate different knowledge traditions and the interests of different knowledge bearers, including pas

[About the acting of the brotherhood of St. Anthony in Würzburg].

The brotherhood of St. Anthony, founded in the old French province of Dauphiné in 1095, was elevated to the rank of a monastic order in 1227, complying with the rules of the Augustinian Canons. In their infirmaries the monks took care of the persons attacked by ergot poisoning. If prayers and ointments were of no avail, in most cases the lower leg was amputated, so that the vital organs were not affected by gangrene. After bad harvests this ergotism became an epidemy, as rye-flour was consumed which had been contaminated by the fungus claviceps purpurea. It was as late as the 17th and 18th cen

Cultural, religious, and demographic factors shaping Arab healthcare providers' decisions on referring Arab patients to palliative care in Israel: a qualitative study.

Despite its recognized importance, PC services remain underutilized, particularly within Israel’s Arab community. AIM: To examine how cultural and religious factors, including religiosity and death-related anxieties, shape Arab healthcare providers’ decisions on PC referral at EOL, and to inform healthcare systems on reducing cultural barriers and improving the accessibility and quality of EOL care for Arab minorities
