OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as increased rates of hospitalizations. Once hospitalized, homeless patients have longer hospital stays than housed persons, and hospital costs have been found to be increased for homeless patients. We sought to describe hospital discharge delays for nonmedical reasons and their relationship to the housing status of participants.

While the majority of medical inpatients in Uganda are assumed to be HIV-positive, HIV testing is limited in inpatient settings. This study describes HIV testing practices and risk behavior among medical inpatients at an urban hospital in Uganda. We interviewed 395 adults on the day of discharge. Overall, 46% tested for HIV before or during admission. Of the 20% tested during hospitalization, 64% were HIV-positive. Among the women delivering a total of 9,591 infants in 1990 at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, 148 had positive results in the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption tests for syphilis. PURPOSE: To document the experience with social induction of labour (IOL) and compare its outcome with electively induced labour for prolonged pregnancy.
METHODS: A prospective matched case-control study.
RESULT: Social IOL was significantly common in women of high social class (78.3 vs. 45.6%, P = 0.03) and the commonest indication was because the parturient was 'tired of pregnancy' (60.9%). There was no significant difference between both groups in the mean induction to delivery interval, caesarean section and instrumental delivery rates, 5-minute Apgar score <7 and early neonatal death.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a disease primarily affecting an older population. The incidence of CRC in young patients has been rising. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of CRC in an ethnically diverse, young population. Medical abortion holds great promise in less-developed countries, where abortion morbidity and mortality remain high. We tested the French mifepristone-misoprostol regimen in two urban outpatient family-planning clinics (n=600) and a rural hospital (n=300) in India. 4% of urban women and 1% of rural women were lost to follow-up.
