Hypercalcemia is generally treated conservatively, including massive fluid administration. However, in cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) associated with drowning, excessive fluid administration may worsen respiratory status. An 81-year-old female was found drowned in a hot spring at an accommodation facility and urgently transported to our hospital. On arrival, the patient exhibited severe respiratory failure, impaired consciousness, and bilateral lung infiltrates on computed tomography (CT), suggesting ARDS. Blood biochemical tests showed calcium (Ca) of 17.4 mg/dL, with alt

Sulfidic hot springs harbor unique microbial communities and are important in mercury (Hg) species transformations, although the fine scale drivers of these processes remain poorly understood. Here we studied Hg speciation in water, biofilms, and sediment across three sampling seasons in a French sulfidic hot spring with low Hg concentrations. Microbial Hg species methylation and demethylation potentials were evaluated using incubation experiments with species-specific Hg isotope tracers. Temporal variation in inorganic Hg (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water, biofilm, and se

The purpose of this study was to clarify dermatologically the favorable effects of hot spring bathing on the rough skin in Capybaras. Non-volcanic hot springs used in this study showed alkaline quality of water (pH 9.3), containing sodium and chloride ions. The normal skin in Capybaras was characterized by the presence of relatively thick epidermis with mild alkaline state (pH 8.26). The dorsal skin had melanin granules in the basal layer. Their rough skin affected in the Japanese cold winter was improved by daily bathing in an alkaline hot spring. The skin properties returned to the normal sk

Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 causes Legionnaires' disease. Water systems contaminated with Legionella are the implicated sources of Legionnaires' disease. This study analyzed L. pneumophila serogroup 1 strains in China using sequence-based typing. Strains were isolated from cooling towers (n = 96), hot springs (n = 42), and potable water systems (n = 26). Isolates from cooling towers, hot springs, and potable water systems were divided into 25 sequence types (STs; index of discrimination [IOD], 0.711), 19 STs (IOD, 0.934), and 3 STs (IOD, 0.151), respectively. The genetic variation among

BACKGROUND: The concerning frequency of K. pneumoniae in various recreational settings, is noteworthy, especially regarding multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains. This superbug is linked to the rapid spread of plasmids carrying these resistance genes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatiotemporal prevalence of MDR-K. pneumoniae in the Kitagata hot spring, Southwestern Uganda.
METHODS: A laboratory-based descriptive longitudinal study was conducted between May and July 2023. During rainy and dry seasons, we collected eighty water samples in the morning and evening from the hot sp

In a metagenome mining-based search of novel thermostable hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (HSDHs), enzymes that are able to selectively oxidize/reduce steroidal compounds, a novel short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR), named Is2-SDR, was recently discovered. This enzyme, found in an Icelandic hot spring metagenome, shared a high sequence similarity with HSDHs, but, unexpectedly, showed no activity in the oxidation of the tested steroid substrates, e.g., cholic acid. Despite that, Is2-SDR proved to be a very active and versatile ketoreductase, being able to regio- and stereoselectively reduce

Radon therapy using radon (222Rn) gas is classified into two types of treatment: inhalation of radon gas and drinking water containing radon. Although short- or long-term intake of spa water is effective in increasing gastric mucosal blood flow, and spa water therapy is useful for treating chronic gastritis and gastric ulcer, the underlying mechanisms for and precise effects of radon protection against mucosal injury are unclear. In the present study, we examined the protective effects of hot spring water drinking and radon inhalation on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in mice. Mice inh

Like humans, the heart rate (HR) of anesthetized rats immersed in CO(2)-water is lower than that when immersed in tap water at the same temperature. To investigate the afferent signal pathway in the mechanism of HR reduction, Wistar rats were anesthetized with urethane and then the spinal cord was transected between T(4) and T(5). The animals were immersed up to the axilla in a bathtub of tap-water (CO(2) contents: 10-20 mg.l(-1)) or of CO(2)-water (965-1,400 mg.l(-1)) at 35 degrees C while recording HR, arterial blood pressure, and arterial blood gas parameters (PaCO(2), PaO(2), pH). Here we present the construction and characterization of metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) from two hot springs residing in the vicinity of Indian Himalayan Geothermal Belt (IHGB). A total of 78 and 7 taxonomic bins were obtained for Old Yume Samdong (OYS) and New Yume Samdong (NYS) hot springs respectively. After passing all the criteria only 21 and 4 MAGs were further studied based on the successful prediction of their 16 S rRNA. Various databases were used such as GTDB, Kaiju, EzTaxon, BLAST XY Plot and NCBI BLAST to get the taxonomic classification of various 16 S rRNA predicted MAGs. Th

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The advent of genetic biobanking has powered gene-environment interaction (GxE) studies in various disease contexts. Therefore, we aimed to discover novel GxE effects that address hot spring residency as a risk to inconspicuous disease association.
METHODS: A complete genetic and demographic registry comprising 129,451 individuals was obtained from Taiwan Biobank (TWB). After geographical disease prevalence was analyzed to identify putative disease association with hot-spring residency, multivariable regression and logistic regression were rechecked to exclude socioeconomic c

A survey for bacteria of the genus Thiothrix indicated that they inhabited the area where the water of the Zmeiny geothermal spring (northern basin of Lake Baikal, Russia) mixed with the lake water. In the coastal zone of the lake oxygen (8.25 g/L) and hydrogen sulfide (up to 1 mg/L) were simultaneously present at sites of massive growth of these particular Thiothrix bacteria. Based on the analysis of the morphological characteristics and sequence of individual genes (16S rRNA, rpoB and tilS), we could not attribute the Thiothrix from Lake Baikal to any of the known species of this genus. Thermophilic bacteria able to survive extreme temperature stress are of great biotechnological interest due to their extracellular production of bioactive molecules as a part of a survival strategy, or by intracellular modifications. In the present study, thermophilic Bacillus haynesii CamB6, isolated from a Chilean hot spring, was studied for the formation of different stress response molecules. The polymeric pigment produced by the bacterial strain was characterized by different physicochemical techniques. On exposure to ranges of temperature (50-60 °C), pH (5.0-7.0), and sources of nitrogen

Gram-positive, thermophilic, endospore-forming, yellow, rod-shaped bacteria, D401aT and D404, were isolated from soil samples of a hot spring in Dikili, Izmir. They can synthesize silver nanoparticles and biotechnologically important thermostable alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase and nitrate reductase, which were also confirmed by in silico analyses. 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis revealed that D401aT was most closely related to D404 (99.9%) and had less than 98.9% similarity to Anoxybacillus flavithermus DSM 2641T, Anoxybacillus thermarum DSM 7141T, Anoxybacillus mongoliensis DSM 19169T a

This study presents the discovery and characterization of a novel thermophilic 3-quinuclidinone reductase (ScQR) identified through metagenomic mining of hot spring environments. ScQR, a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily, was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, and its catalytic properties were systematically characterized. The enzyme demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, retaining 86% of its activity after 48 hours at 70°C. Furthermore, K+ and Mg²+ ions significantly enhanced ScQR's activity at specific concentrations. Structural analysis reve

Drug-resistant bacterial infection and the unfavorable wound microenvironment remain major barriers to chronic wound healing. This study was initiated to address these challenges by developing hot spring effect-inspired thermo-ionic hydrogel microspheres from polysaccharides extracted from Chinese mesona (Mesona chinensis), an edible and medicinal herb, and Zn2+ for the treatment of MRSA-infected chronic wounds. Leveraging endogenous polyphenols in Mesona chinensis polysaccharide (MCP) for photothermal conversion, this system avoids the safety concerns associated with conventional noble-metal
